Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Entre os números e o estado da arte: Uma análise bibliométrica do mercado editorial brasileiro de 2002 a 2022
Get PDFIt can be said that the publishing market acts as a living organism: it is in constant evolution and plays a fundamental role in the dissemination and exchange of knowledge, culture, ideas and ideals. The term itself, “publishing market”, covers the entire production chain of printed or digital materials in circulation, including the preparation of materials, production, publication, distribution and sale of books, magazines, newspapers, e-books, audiobooks and other forms of media in these formats. Therefore, this study is a bibliometric review, which aimed to identify what was produced in the academic environment, from 2002 to 2022, about the Brazilian publishing market. The survey was carried out in the SciELO database and returned 635 articles, after applying filters and manual and individual analysis of the title, abstract and keywords, the result was 129 articles. With the database for the research stabilized, with the software "Microsoft Excel" and "IRaMuTeQ" as support, the analyzes of the productions were carried out. The research results of the bibliometric analysis of the Brazilian publishing market from 2002 to 2022 are presented through graphs and tables that present the authors, title, abstract, year of publication, periodicals and keywords. Based on this survey, the first phase of this research was completed, consisting of quantitative analyses, which led to the conclusion that there is a growth trend in the publication of articles in the period from 2002 to 2022, mainly from 2010 onwards, as well as the number of authors who publish about the Brazilian publishing market; one can notice the preference for individual writing on the theme; the dispersion of articles in different journals. In the second stage, composed of similarity analyzes and application of Porter's theory of competitive forces, it was noted that the results of the similarity analysis highlighted and concentrated studies on the subjects "book", "editorial", "translation" and “literature”, and a potential interest in works on adjacent themes such as “contemporary”, “independent”, “journalism”, “social”, “woman”, “black” and “teaching”; Porter's five forces analysis, in turn, reflected the high bargaining power of suppliers, mainly agents in the graphics industry, and a concentration of power in the hands of a few dominant publishers, which may make it difficult for new competitors to enter. It is believed, therefore, that this bibliometric survey about the Brazilian publishing market contributes to the recognition of the sector as a subject of study, pointing out the main topics of interest in the last twenty years, presenting the panorama of a relevant market in economic and social levels, little studied, and its influence on the composition and insertion in a larger productive chain. It also collaborates with market analysis, based on a strategic vision grounded in the perspective of the book production chain and sectoral analysis, and helps with future research that seeks to understand the academic production of this subject and its trends, in addition to visualizing about the macroenvironment and which are the main agents that make up the book production chain.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Pode-se dizer que o mercado editorial atua como um organismo vivo: está em constante evolução e desempenha um papel fundamental na disseminação e troca de conhecimento, cultura, ideias e ideais. Sendo assim, este estudo é uma revisão bibliométrica, que teve por objetivo identificar o que se produziu no ambiente acadêmico, no período de 2002 a 2022, acerca do mercado editorial brasileiro. O levantamento se deu na base SciELO e retornou 635 artigos, após aplicação de filtros e análise manual e individual do título, resumo e palavras-chaves, chegou-se ao resultado de 129 artigos. Com a base de dados para a pesquisa estabilizada, tendo como um apoio os softwares “Microsoft Excel” e “IRaMuTeQ”, foram realizadas as análises das produções. Os resultados da pesquisa da análise bibliométrica do mercado editorial brasileiro de 2002 a 2022 são apresentados por meio de gráficos e tabelas que apresentam os autores, título, resumo, ano de publicação, periódicos e palavras-chaves. A partir desse levantamento, foi concluída a primeira fase desta pesquisa, composta pelas análises quantitativas, que permitiram concluir que há uma tendência de crescimento na publicação de artigos no período de 2002 a 2022, principalmente a partir de 2010, assim como a quantidade de autores que publicam sobre o mercado editorial brasileiro; pode-se notar a preferência pela escrita individual sobre o tema; a dispersão de artigos em periódicos diferentes. Na segunda etapa, composta pelas análises de similitude e aplicação da teoria das forças competitivas de Porter, notou-se que os resultados da análise de similitude apresentaram destaque e concentração de estudos acerca dos assuntos “livro”, “editorial”, “tradução” e “literatura”, e um potencial interesse de trabalhos por temas adjacentes como “contemporâneo”, “independente”, “jornalismo”, “social”, “mulher”, “negro” e “ensino”; a análise das cinco forças de Porter, por sua vez, refletiu o alto poder de barganha dos fornecedores, principalmente os agentes da indústria gráfica e uma concentração de poder nas mãos de algumas editoras dominantes, o que pode dificultar a entrada de novos concorrentes. Acredita-se, portanto, que este levantamento bibliométrico acerca do mercado editorial brasileiro contribui com o reconhecimento do setor como tema de estudo, apontando os principais temas de interesse nos últimos vinte anos, apresentando o panorama de um mercado relevante em níveis econômicos e sociais, porém pouco estudado, e sua influência na composição e inserção em uma cadeia produtiva maior. Ainda, colabora com a análise do mercado, a partir de uma visão estratégica calçada na ótica da cadeia produtiva do livro e da análise setorial e auxilia com pesquisas futuras que buscam uma compreensão a respeito da produção acadêmica deste tema e suas tendências, além da visualização sobre o macroambiente e quais os principais agentes que compõem a cadeia produtiva do livro.2025-06-2
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
