Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
28-day-all cause mortality-associated risk factors in oncologic patients who developed bacteremia at an oncologic center in Lima, Perú
Get PDFObjetivo: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar factores asociados a mortalidad por cualquier causa a los 28 días en pacientes oncológicos con bacteriemia. Materiales y Métodos: Se recolectaron retrospectivamente los datos de los primeros episodios de bacteriemia en adultos hospitalizados en un centro de cáncer de tercer nivel desde julio 2020 a junio 2024. Resultados: Obtuvimos datos de 293pacientes. La edad media fue 65.42 ± 15.31 años, con predominancia del sexo femenino (53.92%). La mayoría de pacientes presentó un tumor sólido (84.30%) y enfermedad activa (91.81%). El cáncer digestivo fue el más frecuente (34.13%). La mortalidad por cualquier causa a los 28 días fue 32.08%. La terapia empírica fue adecuada en 80.70% de casos. Las bacterias gram negativas predominaron(82.80%), siendo Escherichia coli la más frecuente (45.70%); 43.60% de enterobacterias fueron productoras de beta-lactamasas de espectro extendido y3.27% de gram negativas, resistentes a carbapenémicos. El modelo multivariado de regresión de Poisson identificó al índice de comorbilidad de Charlson (IRR 1.11;95% IC 1.02-1.21), la presencia de sepsis (IRR 2.26; 95% IC 1.19-4.29), shock séptico (IRR 2.74; 95% IC 1.58-4.76) e insuficiencia respiratoria (IRR 1.66; 95%IC 1.05-2.62) como variables independientemente asociadas a mortalidad a los 28días. El punto de partida urinario (IRR 0.38; IC 95% 0.19-0.77) fue el único factor protector para mortalidad a los 28 días. Conclusión: En este centro oncológico, un tercio de pacientes con bacteriemia fallecieron; la mortalidad se rige principalmente por la severidad de la infección y por la presencia de comorbilidades específicas.Objectives: This study aimed to assess 28-day all-cause mortality-associated factors in oncologic patients with bacteremia. Methods: We retrospectively collected data from adult in-patients’ first episodes of bacteremia in a cancer referral center from July 2020 to June 2024. Results: We obtained data from 293 patients. Mean age was 65.42 ± 15.31 years, female sex predominated (53.92%). Most patients had solid tumors (84.30%) and active disease (91.81%). Digestive cancer was the most frequent (34.13%). The 28-day all-cause mortality was 32.08%.Empirical treatment was adequate in 80.70% of cases. Gram-negative bacteria prevailed (82.80%), with Escherichia coli being the most frequent (45.70%);43.60% of enterobacteria were ESBL-producers and 3.27% of gram-negatives were resistant to carbapenems. Multivariate regression Poisson model identified Charlson Comorbidity Index (IRR 1.11; 95% CI 1.02-1.21), sepsis (IRR 2.26; 95%CI 1.19-4.29), septic shock (IRR 2.74; 95% CI 1.58-4.76) and respiratory failure (IRR 1.66; 95% CI 1.05-2.62) as independent variables associated with 28-daymortality. Urinary source (IRR 0.38; CI 95% 0.19-0.77) was the single protective factor for 28-day mortality. Conclusion: In this oncologic center, one-third of patients with bacteremia died; the mortality was primarily driven by the severity of the infection and by the presence of specific comorbidities

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
