Jim Zampini Interview, 23 June 2009

No full text
Born in Painesville in 1932, J. Zampini is a lifetime resident of Lake County. Zampini grew up surrounded by nurseries and eventually became the proprietor of his own nursery. He has been credited with creating new plant variations and using plants for community rejuvenation. Zampini recounts the changes the nursery business has undergone over the years. He also discusses the lasting impression the various waves of immigration have made on the industry.Though mechanization and chemicals are gradually turning nurseries into laboratories, Zampini is optimistic that man will retain a healthy relationship with nature

Calculi, Hodge operators and Laplacians on a quantum Hopf fibration

No full text
We describe Laplacian operators on the quantum group SUq(2) equipped with the four-dimensional bicovariant differential calculus of Woronowicz as well as on the quantum homogeneous space [Formula: see text] with the restricted left covariant three-dimensional differential calculus. This is done by giving a family of Hodge dualities on both the exterior algebras of SUq(2) and [Formula: see text]. We also study gauged Laplacian operators acting on sections of line bundles over the quantum sphere. </jats:p

Monumenti in guerra. Tutela e Restauro in Romagna negli anni del Secondo conflitto mondiale

No full text
This volume addresses the monument protection and restoration during World War II, focusing on the cities of Rimini, Cesena, Forlì, Faenza, and Ravenna. Starting with the evolution of the role of cultural heritage in wartime, the study deeply examines the pivotal role played by the Italian protection bodies and the armed forces in protecting heritage during the war, particularly the Kunstschutz and Monuments Fine Arts & Archive Subcommission. In the light of the devastating and unpredictable damage, the research also investigates the premises for the subsequent reconstruction action, in which the complex relationship between theoretical debate and everyday practice will prove to be conditioned by farraginous legislative aspects, the availability of raw materials, skilled workers, and vibrant local contexts. The volume also investigates the complexity of the reconstruction process, the contribution of the actors involved, and the techniques employed, attempting to delineate, in a broad perspective, what happened to the monumental heritage during the tragic period of the conflict

Between the 20th and 21st centuries, Cesena experienced significant urban development, resulting in a new urban area featuring social housing, student housing, commercial buildings, and a new university campus for the University of Bologna. This initiative, begun in 1989, involved the former Zuccherificio industrial area, located northwest of Cesena’s historic center. The project by Associati International Gregotti was included in the “Census of Italian Architecture from 1945 to the present” by the Ministry of Culture’s Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity. It is recognized for its national architectural significance, the involvement of Vittorio Gregotti and his firm, and the quality of the complex within its urban context. The complex stands out for its urban and formal compositional research and the use of exposed brickwork for all buildings. This approach aimed to reconnect with the site’s industrial past but has faced conservation challenges like salt efflorescence and internal comfort issues. The owner, using the 110% Superbonus incentives, has decided to add thermal insulation to the social housing building, raising various issues. This reflection explores the history, materials, and transformations of this contemporary architecture, which has combined living quality with technological research since its inception and now faces significant conservation challenge

Bunkers after bunkers: cross-conservation and enhancement experiences between Italy and Portugal

No full text
The essay explores the after-life of military structures questioning what could be the contemporary meaning of dissonant heritage sites. It describes two military landscapes, delves into the state of conservation of the surviving network of bunkers, investigates their legal protection regime as well as local communities’ perceptions of these legacies, and finally it illustrates ongoing regeneration practices and possible management models that may result. By means of similarities and differences between the Italian and Portuguese context, the goal is to share value-oriented strategies in the approach to a difficult heritage as well as quality-based solutions for the conscious integration between heritage conservation and sustainable urban development
