Waste and resource management practices, legislation and policy encouraging and influencing ‘regeneration reuse’ of property assets

    No full text
Carbon taxation governance is becoming increasingly popular, further evolving the polluter pays concept already well established in the built environment as a mechanism to controlling and licensing waste generation. This paper presents an explanation of property asset ‘regeneration reuse’ principles following deconstruction, which reduce waste generation associated with the process of demolition, construction and operation. An analysis is made of strategies in Australia and the United Kingdom, comparing jurisdiction targets pertaining to construction and demolition waste that encourage ‘regeneration reuse’. From examination of applicable Australian and United Kingdom legislation, strategic, fiscal and policy that influence on the 'regeneration reuse' of property assets, an evaluation to the variety of issues relevant to waste and resource management practices is reached. The paper concludes that a systematic evaluation framework to selecting building components and structures suitable for reuse after deconstruction must be considered in legislation

The issue of IT outsourcing (ITO) impact on IT workforce has been at the forefront agenda of many discussions in many developed countries so much so that the concerns have been tense in that more IT jobs will be transferred to developing countries which provide IT outsourcing services. In addition, with the growth of IT outsourcing and emerging new outsourcing business models such as utility demand, application service provider, business process outsourcing, offshore outsourcing and many more servicing different industry vertical sectors increase the demand for multiple IT skills and capabilities of IT workforce. In this study, we review relevant literature, newspapers and non-academic articles, websites of companies, governments and non-governmental organisations and others. An outsourcing Malaysia (OM) CEO roundtable discussion was also held to hear the practitioners' views on the topic. Further to that, we sought in-depth insights from seven senior executive managements in service provider firms on the skill sets requirements of fresh IT graduates to fulfill the market needs of IT outsourcing in Malaysia. The four-member research team found that technical, soft and problem-solving skills are the main concerns raised by the key informants. This is in line with the literature review and also the present higher education policy concerns by the Malaysia government

The supply-side IT outsourcing competencies and relationship exchange in Malaysia

IT outsourcing (ITO) has experienced a considerable growth in recent years, so much so that some authors suggest we find ourselves in the outsourcing era. ITO growth seems to be guaranteed at least in the near future. Many past researches on IT outsourcing were done in North America, Europe and Australasia contexts with little evidence from developing countries perspectives [13, 26]. IT outsourcing relationship researches revealed its importance in improving the success of IT outsourcing arrangements. Many researches on relationship, however, were investigated from demand-side perspectives. Hence, it is the aim of this study to complement these one-dimensional findings by investigating the IT outsourcing relationship exchange from service providers’ perspectives in Malaysian context. This report presents the first phase qualitative findings of an on-going research on IT outsourcing competencies and relationship. The study comprises three phases: 1) a focus group and in-depth interviews; 2) mass survey; and 3) final group discussion. The authors have arranged an expert focus group deliberating on the emerging issues and subsequently interviewed five senior executive managements in the service provider firms to explore further on key variables. The unstructured interviews were recorded and transcribed and analysed based on Miles and Huberman (1994) recommendations. The study found that all the variables are, in practice, important determinants of successful outsourcing projects as claimed by many other researches in the western context. The ranking of the determinants or factors, however, were of varying disputes depending on the types of ITO configurations the parties entered into

Parametric Optimization in EDM of Ti-6Al-4V using Copper Tungsten Electrode and Positive Polarity: a statistical approach

This paper explores the develop optimized model to investigate the effects of peak current, pulse on time and pulse off time in electric discharge machining (EDM) performance on titanium alloy utilizing copper tungsten as electrode and positive polarity of the electrode. The experiments are carried out on Ti6Al4V. Experiments were conducted by varying the peak current, pulse on time and pulse off time and the corresponding values of surface roughness (SR) were measured. A mathematical model for correlating influences of these variables and surface finish of the workpiece is developed in this paper. Design of experiments (DOE) method and response surface methodology (RSM) techniques are implemented. The validity test of the fit and adequacy of the proposed models has been carried out through analysis of variance (ANOVA). The obtained results evidence that as the surface roughness increases with peak current and pulse on time increases. The effect of pulse off time on surface roughness changes with peak ampere. The excellent surface finish is investigated in this study at short pulse on time. The optimum machining conditions in favor of surface roughness are estimated and verified with proposed optimized results. It is observed that the developed model is within the limits of the agreeable error when experimental. This result leads to desirable surface roughness and economical industrial machining by optimizing the input parameters

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

The concept of a flexible, large-area, OLED-based lighting system with a modular structure and built-in intelligent light management is introduced. The paper describes the design of a high-voltage integrated circuit for driving and controlling an individual OLED tile in this modular lighting system. The chip comprises a switching DC-DC buck converter for generating the OLED current and a sensitive analog feedback loop for adjusting the duty cycle of the converter’s PWM control signal. The chip was designed in the 80V 0.35µm I3T80 technology of ON Semiconductor

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
