Earthen dam rehabilitation at Rancho La Union in Zapata County, Texas
The earthen dam at Rancho La Union in Zapata County, Texas, dates back to the 1800s. It was originally constructed to provide a supply of water to the livestock of the ranch, and it remains the primary source for livestock watering. The dam has a length of approximately 350 feet, a barrier hydraulic height of less than 25 feet, and a design reservoir capacity of about 1.5 million cubic feet. Under the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission and American Society of Civil Engineers, it is categorized as a small dam with low hazard potential. The structural integrity of the dam has been threatened by vegetation and excessive root growth leading to embankment erosion problems. Spillways have been obstructed and decaying roots have caused pathways for preferential seepage. Hence, the current condition of the earthen dam can be characterized as structurally failing. This thesis details a comprehensive assessment of the integrity of the dam and develops potential remediation actions for its rehabilitation

Harlem : un folio del archivo (intelectual) de Manuel Zapata Olivella.
This study examines the place of Harlem, post-Harlem Renaissance, in the Zapataolivellan archive. The objective is to contribute to studies on the meaning of this legendary black space within the Afro diasporic imaginary, as well as to determine its influence on Manuel Zapata Olivella’s narrative. In addition, this analysis points to Harlem as a space that inspires the author to decisively adopt an agenda of resistance, and underscores Manuel Zapata Olivella’s intention to denounce Harlem’s marginality, post-Renaissance, within the fragile US imperialist and supremacist reality.Este estudio examina el lugar de Harlem, el pos-Harlem Renaissance, en el archivo zapataolivellano. Management of white-tailed deer in the cattle fever tick permanent quarantine area of Zapata County, Texas
White-tailed deer are intermediate hosts for the cattle fever tick, which when infected, carries a protozoan that causes cattle fever, an important livestock disease. High deer densities in the cattle fever tick permanent quarantine area in Zapata County have complicated tick eradication efforts. My objectives were to influence deer management in the Zapata County quarantine zone by working with private landowners on a public deer management outreach initiative and to assist the United States Department of Agriculture in refining their treatment of deer for ticks at medicated feed sites. Through deer management, educational conferences, and publicly available literature, I was able to provide landowners with science-based recommendations on managing white-tailed deer on their properties. Helicopter surveys used to monitor changes in white-tailed deer sex ratio revealed little change in the harvest strategy of landowners throughout the course of my project. White-tailed deer visitation rates at medicated feed sites, estimated using Program MARK’s mark-resight analysis, revealed greater use of medicated feed sites by males than females, except during winter when use was low by both sexes

Manuel Zapata Olivella: Más Allá de la Conmemoración del Centenario
The relevance of the work of Manuel Zapata Olivella (Santa Cruz de Lorica, Córdoba, March 17, 1920-Bogotá, November 19, 2004), derives from its aesthetic quality developed into a solid and sharp narrative voice that unfolds in controversial themes, assuming hybridity as an option that comfortably transverses through fiction, essay, travel book, diary, and autobiography. His literary narrative and the critical texts that he bequeathed to Colombian culture have a clear universal character that place the author in a prominent place in national and world literature. This article briefly collects the essential characteristics of this author’s work and portrays the importance of revising it in the creative context of both the academy and various cultural spaces. The article is part of an independent research project, currently underway, entitled: Other Voices of Latin American Literature in which the authors are advancing.
