    No full text
Water pollutants is one of the global challenges that society must address in the 21st century aiming to improve water quality and reduce human and ecosystem health impacts. Industrialization, climate change, and expansion of urban areas produce a variety of water pollutants. In this work, we discuss some of the most recent and relevant findings related to the release of heavy metals, the possible risks for the environment and human health, as well as the methods and materials available for their removal. Anthropogenic activities, such as those related to mining, agriculture and metal-based industrial operations are identified as the main source of the increasing amounts of heavy metals found in aquatic environments. Some of the health hazards derived from repeated exposure to traces of heavy metals, including lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic, are outlined. We also give some perspectives about several techniques that are used to detect heavy metals, as well as about the different factors (e.g. pH, temperature, ionic strength) that could affect their removal. The advantages and drawbacks of conventional and non-conventional heavy metal removal methods are critically discussed, given particular attention to those related to adsorption, nanostructured materials and plant-mediated remediation. Ingeniero/a Biomédico/

The fabrication of advanced ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) with low-dimensional carbón allotropes phases is currently an open research topic. One of the modern challenges still remains to overcome common experimental issues, regarding the homogeneity of the nanocarbon dispersion, their location within the ceramic matrix, and the type of bonding between the filler and the matrix. This work introduces the fabrication of fully-dense alumina/graphene ceramic matrix composites by the sol-gel route and reactive spark plasma sintering, as an alternative methodology to improve the dispersion of the graphene flakes within the composite, and to promote the formation of strong bonds between graphene flakes and the ceramic matrix such as Al-O-C oxygen bridges. The micro/nano structures are researched by: nitrogen physisorption, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). SEM observations revealed the absence of graphene agglomerations suggesting the efficacy of this abrication approach. Raman analyses have confirmed the integrity of the graphene along the abrication process. Mechanical features such as hardness, and indentation fracture toughness ere measured for different graphene contents. Our results are compared with those from conventional alumina/graphene CMCs, and suggest that the current approach would offer an appealing route to fabricate reinforced alumina/nanocarbon based ceramics.

The development of novel and non-invasive treatments to prevent microorganism’s adhesion and biofilm formation in medical prosthesis has become a challenge. This problem is mainly because, in the last decade, bacteria have been modifying their metabolic states, making them resistant even to the action of antibiotics. For this reason, surface engineering is working with graphene coatings for the sterilization and improvement of biomedical implants surface since it has excellent physicochemical properties. In this work, we propose an innovative treatment based on the application of variable frequencies trough thin-films based on graphene and poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) to avoid the bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Furthermore, we tested their potential applications to prevent the growth of Escherichia Coli bacteria of the TG1 strain (E. coli TG1) as a function of the applied frequencies in the range 5 MHz < f < 15 MHz. At this frequency, we did observe a “radio frequency bioelectric effect” that affected the polar parts of the microorganisms. The evaluation of the bactericidal effectiveness of this method was carried out following the typical process of dilution, measuring both the Optical Density at 600 nm and the Colony Forming Units (CFU). Our findings show improved bacteria annihilation when exposed to radiofrequency between 10MHz and 15MHz. We attribute this behavior to the fact that some cell walls were damage when bacteria were exposed to a specific frequency. These results are promising to apply radiofrequency as an alternative and non-invasive method to prevent the formation of prosthetic biofilms.

Modeling electronic properties of polymeric-based composite thin films

Thin films of polymer-based composites have been widely studied in recent decades due to their multiple applications. This is because they are materials that exhibit the physicochemical properties of both the polymer composite and the nanomaterial from which the composite is made (electrical, mechanical and thermal). For this reason, modeling these properties of CPCs is a fundamental part of predicting their behavior as a material. In this thesis, an ab initio method is developed to model the anisotropic conductivity of a stretched CPC made of a polymeric matrix of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixed with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). These quantities are obtained by a combination of density functional theory calculations, non-equilibrium Green's functions based methods and an affine deformation geometric statistical statistical model. In this way, we provide a qualitative and semi-quantitative description of the measured anisotropic conductivity of PVA/SWCNT CPCs. The success of this model demonstrates that the conductivity of CPCs is determined by (1) the connectivity of the SWCNTs network within the polymer matrix, (2) the resistance to intertubular conductance hopping, (3) the concentration of SWCNTs in the sample, and (4) the amount of stretching and the concomitant orientational order parameter of the SWCNTs in the composite. The developed model can potentially be applied to obtain CPCs with desired anisotropic conductivity based on ballistic conductive nanomaterials, i.e., SWCNTs, and different polymeric matrices.Físicio/

In order to study the electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of an electrode, different compositions of graphene, polyvinylidiene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were tested. Cyclic voltammetry and electro- chemical impedance spectroscopy were used in order to determine the composition of the reagents with the best performance in terms of current generated, potential peak separation and impedance, as well as to determine which composite had the highest electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction. The composite with 0.4 wt% graphene / 0.5 wt% PVDF / 0.5 wt% PVA showed the best performance in each method, with a cathodic peak current of -132.7 µ A, result that is 2.1 times higher than that of the polymeric mixture and 6.7 times higher than the PVA by itself. This compos- ite also showed the lowest potential peak separation of 0.17 V and the lowest charge transfer resistance of 468.5 Ω, which is 4.7 times lower than that of the polymeric ma- trix. The results for the catalytic activity demonstrate the same tendency, with the 0.4% composite having the highest current generated at every pH (pH taking the values of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10) and the more positive values of onset potential of -0.15 V vs Ag/AgCl at pH = 2 and -0.24 V at pH = 10, with the lowest overpotential of -1.04 and -0.66 V vs NHE (Normal Hydrogen Electrode) respectively, showing the best electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
