TRANSFORMATIONS OF TRADITIONAL AEROPHONIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS FROM LAZ (NEAR MARIJA BISTRICA)
The paper investigates transformational processes that
have affected aerophonic instruments in the village of Laz (in the northern Croatian province of Hrvatsko zagorje) and describes some other developments in musical instrument making. The author has examined numerous oral reports, written documents, and specimens of musical instruments in the village and in the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb in order to trace the development of musical instruments as far as the year 1875
Book Review: Gustav Shpet’s Contribution to Philosophy and Cultural Theory
The author reviews Gustav Shpet’s Contribution to Philosophy and Cultural Theory edited by Galin Tihanov. The volume provides a comprehensive introduction to the significance of the Russian philosopher Gustav Shpet (1879-1937) in the development of phenomenology, hermeneutics, semiotics, literary theory, psychology, and cultural criticism
The politics of estrangement: The case of the early Shklovsky
I discuss here Shklovsky's theory of estrangement as formulated in a number of texts written before the October revolution of 1917. The concept of estrangement can only be properly grasped if the early Shklovsky is placed in the context of World War I; we need to begin to see him as an author shaped by that war and as a participant in the larger constellation of brilliant European essayists who responded to this momentous event. To this end, the article draws parallels between his writings and those of Ernst Junger and Georg Simmel. More importantly, it uncovers the conservative aspects of Shklovsky's theory of estrangement and analyzes his contradictory attitudes toward democracy and modernization. The final section traces the fortunes of Shklovsky's concept of estrangement at the hands of its most significant critics, Bertolt Brecht and Herbert Marcuse. Copyright © 2005 by the Svetlana Boym
Związki przestrzenne "nowej" Rosji : krajOBRAZ po "pierestrojce" w dramaturgii Aleksandra Galina
The article is an attempt of a spacious analysis of works by Aleksandr Galin written after
1989. Topographical and psychological images of “marginal characters” and “new Russians”
were contrasted here. The analytical basis constitutes such works as Anomaly, Czech picture,
Group, …Sorry, The Siren and the Victoria. Basing on them, the author shows a relationship
between a limited space and limited life possibilities of “marginals” and a relationship between
a broadened space and a social position of ‘new Russians”
The Visualisation and Expression of Virtual 3DSurfaces Explored through Custom Developed Interactive Software, Optically Mixed Coloured Surface Contouring and Fine Art Printmaking
This short presentation paper describes an exploration and the visualisation of virtual 3D compositions through custom developed software and fine art printmaking. The author, a trained and practising visual artist considers this innovative visualisation as an exploration into the newly emerging visual language of the computer in similar vein to some of the NPR artists. The comprehension of virtual 3D objects is achieved primarily through linear surface contouring. The colour of these 3D surfaces is created by components intrinsic to the contour structure culminating in optical colour mixtures. The custom software, developed by the author, facilitates the application of the surface contouring to imported pre-constructed 3D object’s surfaces, computing the contouring component configurations and dimensions. Fine art screen-prints are created from DIBs generated within the software from the colour layers comprising the surface contouring. The printed DIBs form monochrome positives that are available for the artist to edit at will, before or following the transfer to screen-print screens and printing in CMYK screen-printing inks. The entire process can be reiterated editing the composition’s coloured contouring using the software, the positives or even the screens themselves until a satisfactory aesthetic result is obtainedEurographics 2004 - Short Presentation
ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDINGS OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN YUGOSLAVIA
This survey of initial archeomusicological research on the territory of Yugoslavia is based on published and unpublished sources, that is on the archeological findings of musical instruments and objects that have not been identified as musical instruments but as "cult-magic tools". The article presents archeological findings of musical instruments according to the Hornbostel and Sachs classification system and defines them typologically. Musical instruments are presented from three basic groups: idiophones, aerophones and chordophones. The author reinterprets certain archeological findings, pointing to the plausible application in music of the "cult-magic tools", finding occasional parallels with contemporary traditional instruments and beliefs preserved with individual types of musical instrument, presenting the facts and assumptions on the specific functions of these instruments in the prehistoric and historic age, and registering certain phenomena of continuity in usage of certain types of musical instruments on the territory of Yugoslavia
Tendencies and Realizations of Organology in Croatia Before the Year 1941
This article is an attempt at presenting the tendencies in the development of organology as a special branch of ethnomusicology dealing with music instruments. The author remarks that in Croata, after the synthetic work of F. Kuhač, most works were of narrower scope and ethnorgaphic or ethnological orientation, although the musicological approach became ever more expressed. The balance of these approaches and a high scientific standard was best achieved by B. Širola in his mature works. Synthetic analysis at a higher scientific and methodological level still remains a challenge and unrealized aspiration of Croatian organology. Its development is faciliated by the perfection of collection methods and data recording techniques
Text and Paratext in the Plays of "New Wave"
The article discusses some functions of paratextual remarks in the plays of "new wave". Through the analysis of director's remarks in the plays of Alexander Galin and Stepan Zlotnikov, the article's author demonstrates the augmentation of the "supporting" aspect of dramatic texts. These remarks are oriented towards the creation of an emotional atmosphere of theatrical action; due to their expressive richness they frequently serve as a mechanism of aesthetic evaluation in drama conflicts
