Inclusive searches for squarks and gluinos with the ATLAS detector
Despite the absence of experimental evidence, weak scale supersymmetry remains one of the best motivated and studied Standard Model extensions. This talk summarises recent ATLAS results on inclusive searches for promptly decaying supersymmetric squarks and gluinos in events containing jets, missing transverse momentum with and without light leptons. The results presented utilise 20/fb of 8 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, and prospects for 13 TeV Run-2 data are also included. First results with run2 data will be included if availabl
An ecological momentary assessment analysis of relations among coping, affect, and smoking lapse:
This study used EMA data from smokers engaged in an earnest attempt to quit smoking to assess complex relations among coping, affect, and smoking. Analyses tested hypotheses about the main effects of coping and both mediators and moderators of coping effects on subsequent outcomes of interest (i.e., affect, coping effort, coping efficacy, and smoking behavior). Results of multilevel models indicated that coping does not improve negative affect within 4 hours of coping efforts, but that coping does improve positive affect and increase the odds of engaging in temptation coping in the short-term. Lapses were more likely to happen when recent coping was reported within 48 hours. None of the putative mediators of coping were predictive of later lapse risk as anticipated. Analyses also revealed that pre-quit coping practice moderated the effects of post-quit coping to deal with stressful events on later affect. Moreover, significant moderating gender effects were also found in these relations.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 53-66)by Haruka Minam
Extended Delta-map: a map-based foreground removal method for CMB polarization observations
In order to extract information about inflationary gravitational waves using
-mode patterns of cosmic microwave polarization anisotropy, we need to
remove the foreground radiation from the Milky Way. In our previous delta-map
method for foreground removal, the number of observation bands was limited to
the number of parameters of the assumed foreground model, and therefore it was
difficult to improve the sensitivity by increasing the number of observation
bands. Here, we extend the previous method so that it can be adapted to an
arbitrary number of observation bands. Using parametric likelihood and
realistic foreground and CMB simulations, we show that our method can increase
the sensitivity to the tensor-to-scalar ratio without inducing any
significant bias.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, matches version published in PTE
Relations among affect, abstinence motivation and confidence, and daily lapse risk among smokers trying to quit
Aims: This study prospectively tested the hypothesis that changes in momentary affect, abstinence motivation, and confidence would predict lapse risk over the next 12-48 hours using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) data from smokers attempting to quit smoking. The moderating effects of high-risk contexts on relations between cognitions (motivation and confidence) and lapse risk were also tested. Method: 79 adult, daily smokers recorded their momentary affect, motivation to quit, abstinence confidence, and smoking behaviors in near real time with multiple EMA reports using electronic diaries post-quit. Results: Multilevel models indicated that increases in negative affect predicted greater lapse risk up to 12 hours, but not 24 hours later. Neither positive nor negative affect had significant effects on subsequent cognitions. High levels of motivation appeared to reduce increases in lapse risk that occur over hours. Momentary increases in confidence predicted greater lapse risk over 12 hours in high-risk situations, but not in the absence of potent smoking triggers. Conclusion: Momentary changes in negative affect, motivation, and confidence, during a quit attempt all had short-term effects on smoking lapse. Negative affect had short-lived effects on lapse risk, whereas high levels of motivation protected against the risk of lapsing that accumulates over hours. Contrary to expectations, an acute increase in confidence may increase vulnerability to lapse in the context of potent smoking triggers. Relations observed among affect, cognitions, and lapse seem to depend critically on the timing of assessments and the contexts in which the assessments occur.Ph. Spatial Structure of “Ie” and “Mura” : A Case Study of Minami-katabe, Aikawa-machi Sado Island
This paper is a monograph on Minami-katabe, Aikawa Town, Sado District, Niigata Prefecture, a location which is one of the fixed research points, which is pursuant to the basic investigation items set by the Cooperative Research Group for special studies on “Regional Differences and Regionalism in Japanese Folk Culture”. As of 1985, Minamikatabe was a ‘seaside village’ fronting on the Japan Sea, with a population of 148 in 39 households. In addition to a small amount of ‘Isonegi’ (collection of seaweed and shellfish, and harpoon fishing) that is carried out, people live on agriculture and forestry, based on paddy fields (about 6 tan fields for each family, 1 tan = 0.245 acre) and a large common forest.
This paper, while including items designated by the Research Group, describes them by refocusing on the spatial order of the “Ie (family and homestead)” and “Mura (village)”. Chapter 1, on the general situation of the research subject, gives a geographical and historical outline of Minami-katabe, and describes the overall characteristics of its industries. Chapter 2, on the spatial structure of the “Ie” describes characteristics in the positioning and usage of houses and rooms, and also deals with the gods in the house and lot. Chapter 3, on various aspects of family life, describes, from the structural characteristics of family, the role and duties of each family member; the correlation between the wedding ceremony and the custom of the bride's long stay at her parents' home; and the relation between the generational hierarchy system and the position of each generation in the family. Chapter 4, on the spatial structure of the “Mura”, describes the various productive areas, such as arable land, forest, meadow, and beach, and also symbologically discusses the internal village space, including ritual ceremonies for Shintoist and Buddhist deities. Chapter 5, on various aspects of village life, describes the system of village administration, the arrangement of age groups which characterizes the social structure of Minami-katabe, and various aspects of funeral ceremonies and memorial services.
Since this paper is simply a report based on field work, it does not give any special conclusions; but the author believes that it describes detailed actualities of social life in the village and its structural principle.
Based on this paper, further task will be needed to describe the emic folk concepts, consciousness, feelings and logic of the inhabitants of Minami-katabe. The author points out that, as one focal point of this, attention should be paid to the concept of “Ji (land)” as seen in “jigami (the god of land)” or “jiwake-no-shinrui (relationship by exchange of land)”.departmental bulletin pape
A way of seeing people and place: Phenomenology in environment-behavior research
This review examines the phenomenological approach as it might be used to explore environmental and architectural issues. After discussing the nature of phenomenology in broad terms, the review presents two major assumptions of the phenomenological approach: (1) that people and environment compose an indivisible whole; (2) that phenomenological method can be described in terms of a “radical empiricism.” The review then considers three specific phenomenological methods: (1) first-person phenomenological research; (2) existential-phenomenological research; and (3) hermeneutical-phenomenological research. Next, the article discusses trustworthiness and reliability as they can be understood phenomenologically. Finally, the review considers the value of phenomenology for environmental design
