Alternative Muslim modernities: Bosnian intellectuals in the Ottoman and Habsburg Empires
The Habsburg takeover of Ottoman Bosnia Herzegovina (1878–1918) is conventionally considered the entry of this province into the European realm and the onset of its modernization. Treating the transition from one empire to another not as a radical break, but as in many respects continuity, reveals that the imperial context provided for the existence of overlapping affiliations that shaped the means by which modernity was mediated and embodied in the local experience. Drawing on Bosnian and Ottoman sources, this article analyzes Bosnian intellectuals’ conceptions of their particular Muslim modernity in a European context. It comparatively evaluates the ways in which they integrated the modernist discourse that developed in the Ottoman Empire and the broader Muslim world, and how they also contributed to that discourse. I show that their concern with modernity was not abstract but rather focused on concrete solutions that the Muslim modernists developed to challenges in transforming their societies. I argue that we must incorporate Islamic intellectual history, and cross-regional exchanges within it, to understand southeastern Europe's past and present, and that studies of Europe and the Middle East need to look beyond geohistorical and disciplinary divisions.Peer reviewe

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of Some New N-(1H-benzimidazol-2- yl)-2-mercaptoacetamide Derivatives
Background:
Due to multi-drug, extended-drug, and pandrug resistance phenotypes,
bacterial resistance to antibiotics and fungal infections are a general health issue. Particulary,
increase of fungal infections due to secondary cause of human diseases have been observed. An
extensive variety of benzimidazole derivatives have been characterized for their chemotherapeutic
significance. Benzimidazole derivatives have received important attention because of pharmacological
significance during current years, especially antimicrobial, anti-fungal, antitubercular, antioxidant,
anti-Alzheimer's disease and antihypertension activities.
Methods:
Some N-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-2-mercaptoacetamide derivatives (2a-h) were
synthesised and evaluated for their antimicrobial activity. The title compounds were gained by
reacting N-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-2-chloroacetamide with some substituted 2-mercapto heterocyclic
rings. The synthesised compounds were investigated for their antimicrobial activities against
C. albicans (ATCC 24433), C. krusei (ATCC 6258), C. glabrata (ATCC90030), C. parapsilosis
(ATCC 22019), E. coli (ATCC 25922), E. coli (ATCC 35218), E. feacalis (ATCC 51299),
E. feacalis (ATCC 29212), S. aureus (ATCC 25923), K. pneumoniae (ATCC 700603),
P. aeruginosa (ATCC 27853).
Results:
The compounds showed high antifungal activity when compared with standard drug
ketoconazole. In addition, all compounds (MIC 100 µg/mL) showed inhibitor activity against
P. aeruginosa at two fold concentration of chloramphenicol (MIC 50 µg/mL). Also, compounds 2a,
2c and 2e (MIC: 50 µg/mL) have equal effect against E. coli (ATCC 35218) and more effective
than other compounds (MIC of chloramphenicol: 100 µg/mL).
Conclusıon:
All compounds showed notable activity. Compounds have determined to possess higher
antifungal activity than antibacterial activity. Additionally, compounds 2a with 1-methyltetrazole,
2c with benzothiazole and 2e with 6-chlorobenzothiazole moieties were found as the most active
compounds.</jats:sec
Deux ou trois choses que l'on sait de lui
Two or Three Things We Know About Him.
In 1977, Jacques Lefrere found an Iliad in Spanish which contained a statement of ownership by Isidore Ducasse, Count of Lautréamont, which reveals possession of another book. Its analysis, combined with a remarkable synthesis of the criticism, provides great insight in locating the work — and the author, to some degree.
This essay focuses on Dante’s references to Livy in Convivio IV.v, 11 as well as on some particularly important references to the Roman historian in the second book of the De Monarchia. The author argues that the first reference is most likely derived from the epitome compiled by Livy’s abbreviator Florus, and shows how it is placed at the beginning of a passage that refers to several different historiographical sources, including Agustine. The author therefore suggests that this reference to Livy in the Convivio is not based on Dante’s direct knowledge of the work of the Roman historian, but rather on the information contained in the synthesis by Florus. She also challenges the scholarly consensus on this
topic by showing that some references to Livy in the De Monarchia – especially the “programmatic” one in II.iii, 6 – do not appear in the indirect tradition and can only be traced back directly to Livy. This suggests that Dante likely accessed the work of Livy before the composition of his political treatise
Microwave supported synthesis of some novel 1,3-Diarylpyrazino[1,2-a] benzimidazole derivatives and investigation of their anticancer activities
WOS: 000286905400048PubMed ID: 21122952The syntheses of 1,3-diarylpyrazino[1,2-a]benzimidazole derivatives and the investigation of their anticancer activities were studied. For this, 2-aryloylbenzimidazole derivatives were reacted with 2-bromoacetophenones in acetone to give 1-(2-aryl-2-oxoethyl)-2-aryloylbenzimidazoles. The resulting materials were reacted with ammonium acetate in acetic acid to obtain the aimed compound. In this reaction, microwave irradiation method was applied as the reaction conditions. Anticancer activities of the compounds obtained were investigated. It was observed that some of the compounds showed remarkable anticancer activities
New N’-Arylidene-2-[(4-Nitrophenyl)Piperazın-1-yl]Acetohydrazide Derivatives: Synthesis and Anticancer Activity Investigation
WOS: 000405935700007Background: Compounds bearing ortho-hydroxy N-acyl hydrazone moiety have been reported with high anticancer activity acting by increasing the enzymatic activity of procaspase-3 in cancer cells and therefore inducing apoptosis in some tumour models. Methods: Considering this subunit's proclivity for anticancer activity we have synthesized novel N'-arylidene-2-[(4-nitrophenyl) piperazin-1-yl] acetohydrazide derivatives (3a-3n) including N-acyl hydrazone moiety with a well-known three step synthetic procedure. The antiproliferative activity of the compounds were investigated using MTT method and xCELLigence real time cell analysis system against NIH/3T3 (Mouse embryo fibroblast cell line) as healthy cell line and A549 (Human lung adenocarcinoma ephitelial cell line) as tumour cell line. Results and Conclusion: The IC50 values of final compounds were determined for 24h and 48h incubation periods. As a second stage, flow cytometric analysis was performed for selected highly active compounds (3g, 3i, 3j, 3n) on A549 cell line. Compound 3i bearing 3-chlorophenyl moiety was detected to cause apoptosis in a ratio of 54.7 %
This paper deals with some works which might have influenced Ugo Foscolo’s aesthetic thought and in particular his unfinished poem Le Grazie. In two lists of books dating at his stay in Florence (1812-1813), Foscolo registers his possession of two editions of Thomson’s Seasons, a French one (accompanied by the original English text) and an Italian one. In another list, which records the books he left in Milan before going into exile, we can also ind a Musarion, which could be a French, or even the Italian translation of Wieland’s work of the same title. Finally, in his youth Piano di studi, Foscolo names an André, who has to be identified with Yves-Marie André, the author of a famous Essai sur le Beau. This essay was quoted sometimes literally by Leopoldo Cicognara in his book Del Bello. The promoter of Canova’s art, Cicognara was in August-September 1812 at the same Florentine hotel where Foscolo lived. Therefore, Foscolo’s plan of a poem to the Graces must have benefitted not only of the poet’s deep knowledge of Classical literature but also of the influence of the whole European culture between xviii and xix century: from Thomson’s bucolic poetry, to Wieland’s galant and Rococo grace, until Canova’s Neoclassicism
