Microzooplankton Tintinnida (Protozoa: Ciliophora) communities from the Izmir Bay, Turkey and their diversity and distribution for last 20 years
The distributions of families belonging to Tintinnida on samples collected from izrnir Bay for 20 years were examined in this study. The species list, quantity and quality information prepared for each species of the 11 families belonging to the Tintinnida were examined together with the seawater temperature changes during the period and a general species lists were established. In addition to the indigenous species that are constantly found in the bay, non-indigenous species that have been transported by ballast tanks have also been discussed. The Izmir Grand Canal Project was inaugurated in year 2000 and the relatively increase in the quality and quantity of the species belonging to the Tintinnida families has been observed in addition to the dinoflagellate and diatom family species, which are two relatively large groups in the bay
Investigation of harmful algae in Izmir Bay for the 30 years
Marine pollution, which has been seen for the recent years in cities with a coast that industrializes day by day, was also seen in Izmir, the third most populous city of Turkey. After the destruction of Ragip Pasa jetty and especially the completion of the Grand Canal Project, the improvement in the gulf is increasing day by day. In Izmir Bay, which is one of the most fertile areas of the Aegean Sea, excessive algae growth is occasionally observed. In this study, 360 quantitative and 1080 qualitative samples were obtained during the monitoring projects carried out jointly by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Dokuz Eylul University Marine Sciences and Technology Institute and Ege University Faculty of Fisheries between 1990-2016 were examined. The distribution of the 2 dominant major classes Dinophyceae and Bacillariophyceae were investigated. In addition to the species that produce toxins such as DSP, ASP and PSP into the marine environment, species that do not contain any toxins but cause adverse conditions in the environment by mass-formation were investigated.Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology of Dokuz Eylul UniversityThis study was carried out by examining the plankton samples obtained from the Izmir bay monitoring projects organized by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and the Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology of Dokuz Eylul University on a seasonal basis every year between 19902016. The author participated in the expeditions under the Expedition coordinator Prof.Dr. Bulent Cihangir and Res. Ass. Dr. Erkan Demirkurt and collected both quality and quantity samples carried out sedimentations, microscope studies, entered the counting results and species lists on computer and presented them to Prof.Dr. Tufan Koray approved and carried out statistical work results seasonally 4 times each year. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Distribution of phytoplanktonic species in the sea snot in 2021 in the Marmara Sea
Sea snot, which was seen and reported in the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas in the early 1990s, had been on Turkey's agenda as an environmental massive disaster from the winter months of 2021 until the end of summer in the Sea of Marmara. Due to the magnitude and topicality of the subject, the samples collected from the coastal areas where sea snot is observed in Marmara from January until July were examined. According to the results obtained, 5 classes were determined in sea snot. Species of algae that secrete mucilage, which provides stickiness to the formation, were also been identified in sea snot. These are 1 dinoflagellate, 2 Prymnesiosides, 5 diatoms, and 2 cyanobacteria species. 8 toxic planktonic species were detected in sea snot: 1 causing PSP poisoning and 3 of dinoflagellate causing DSP poisoning; 1 of prymnesiophisid that releases ichthyotoxin to the sea environment, and 3 of diatoms that cause ASP poisoning
Non-native two new Tintinnida (Oligotrichida) taxa in İzmir Bay: Leptotintinnus nordqvisti (Brandt 1906) ve Tintinnopsis corniger (Hada, 1964)
Yerel olmayan türlerin gemilerin balast tanklarıyla uzaklardaki başka ortamlara taşındıkları yüzyıllardır bilinmektedir. Diatom türleri ve sporları, dinoflagellat türleri ve kistleri ve zooplanktonik organizmalar, balast tanklarıyla taşınan en bilinen canlılardır. Bu çalışma Ciliata sınıfını ele alıp, İzmir Körfezi’nde daha önce gözlenmemiş, körfezdeki daha önceki çalışmalarda rapor edilmemiş iki yeni Tintinnid türünü sunmaktadır.Non-indigenous species in ballast tanks have been transporting by vessels known since centuries all over the world. Diatoms, resting spores of diatoms, dinoflagellates and cysts, ciliates and protozooplanktonic organisms are the primary candidates for successfull ballast tank water transport. This study focuses on Ciliata and reveals two new taxa of Tintinnida which were not recorded in any previous studies in Izmir Bay
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
