Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Étude numérique et expérimentale des phénomènes d'accrétion-éjection en astrophysique de laboratoire
With the development of high power laser facilities able to focus microscopic amounts of energy in less than 1 mm³ and in a few nanoseconds, it became possible to reach High Energy Density (HED) regimes of matter previously found only in planetary and stellar interiors. Laboratory astrophysics thus aims to study certain classes of astrophysical objects in a controlled environment of HED facilities using appropriate scaling laws.The modelling of hydrodynamic plasma flows in such experiments requires the use of numerical tools that will be presented in this thesis work. In particular, we will start by discussing the multi-physics Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) code FLASH that can be used to model laser driven plasma flows. Then, we will discuss the equation of state and opacities necessary to precisely model the experimental conditions. Finally, in a validation effort, a code to code comparison study for MULTI, DUED and FLASH codes will be illustrated with several test cases. In a second part, we will present experimental results related to the accretion-ejection mechanisms in astrophysical objects, and in particular, magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (mCV) and astrophysical jets. The former is a binary star system, where a white dwarf accretes matter from a companion star. The matter is then confined by magnetic field lines and falls with a supersonic velocity onto the white dwarf surface, generating a stationary radiative shock wave in the accretion column. This work is part of the POLAR project and lead to experiments performed on the LULI2000 (France), GEKKO XII (Japan) and Orion (UK) laser facilities. The second type of objects that were studied in this work are astrophysical jets, where matter is ejected from a central compact object, forming plasma flows collimated over large distances. In particular, we have performed an experimental demonstration of the Shock Focused Inertial Confinement (SFIC) mechanism on the LULI2000 laser facility.Avec le développement des installations laser de puissance, qui focalisent des quantités macroscopique d'énergie dans moins d'un mm3 en quelques nanosecondes, il devenu possible d'atteindre des conditions de matière à Haute Densité d'Énergie (HDE) précédemment accessibles uniquement à l'intérieur des intérieurs planétaires ou stellaires. L’astrophysique de laboratoire vise ainsi à étudier certaines classes d'objets astrophysiques dans un environnement contrôlé sur des installations HDE à l’aide des lois d’échelles appropriées. La modélisation des écoulements hydrodynamiques dans ces expériences nécessite l’utilisation d’un ensemble d’outils numériques, qui seront abordés dans une première partie de ce travail. En particulier, je présenterai un code d’hydrodynamique/MHD radiative à raffinement automatique de maillage (AMR), FLASH, développé à l’université de Chicago, permettant de modéliser les plasmas produits par laser. Puis, je discuterai de l’amélioration des données de base (équations d’état et opacités), indispensables pour simuler avec précision les conditions expérimentales. Enfin, dans un effort de validation, une comparaison entre les codes MULTI, DUED et FLASH sera illustrée sur un cas test. Dans une deuxième partie, seront abordés les résultats expérimentaux relatifs aux mécanismes d’accrétion-éjection de matière dans les objets astrophysiques que sont les variables cataclysmiques magnétiques (mCV) et les jets astrophysiques. Les premiers sont des systèmes binaires dans lesquels une naine blanche accréte de la matière provenant d'une étoile compagnon. La matière est alors confinée par des lignes de champ magnétiques et tombe avec une vitesse supersonique à la surface de la naine blanche, créant un choc radiatif stationnaire dans la colonne d’accrétion. Ce travail s'inscrit dans le cadre d'un projet national POLAR et a donné lieu à des expériences effectuées sur les installations laser LULI2000, GEKKO XII (Japon) et Orion (R.-U.). Le second type d'objets étudiés est les jets astrophysiques où la matière est éjectée d’un objet compact, formant des flots de plasmas collimatés sur de larges distances. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
