Mapping the disaster : global prediction and the medium of ‘digital earth’

    No full text
This paper explores the mapping of disaster in digital prediction models. Concentrating on the imminent disaster of climate change, the author asks how global digital models can be expanded to incorporate a wild nature and wild data. This theme is considered through an examination of the ‘nature’ of disaster and its reportage, GISs and their extension into physical space, the language of climate change, and the role of digital machines in these experiments with climate. The author concludes with an examination of expanded forms of mapping to suggest possible reconfigurations of the terms of the disaster

An Interview with Elizabeth Grosz: Geopower, Inhumanism and the Biopolitical

    No full text
© 2017, © The Author(s) 2017. This article is an interview with Elizabeth Grosz by Kathryn Yusoff and Nigel Clark. It primarily addresses Grosz’s approaches to ‘geopower’, and the discussion encompasses an exploration of her ideas on biopolitics, inhuman forces and material experimentation. Grosz describes geopower as a force that subtends the possibility of politics. The interview is accompanied by a brief contextualizing introduction examining the themes of geophilosophy and the inhumanities in Grosz’s work

© 2017, © The Author(s) 2017. This article is an interview with Elizabeth Povinelli, by Mathew Coleman and Kathryn Yusoff. It addresses Povinelli’s approaches to ‘geontologies’ and ‘geontopower’, and the discussion encompasses an exploration of her ideas on biopolitics, her retheorization of power in the current conditions of late liberalism, and the situation of the inhuman within philosophical and anthropological economies. Povinelli describes a mode of power that she calls geontopower, which operates through the governance of Life and Nonlife. The interview is accompanied by a brief contextualizing introduction

Ascertaining trust of information transmitted during a disaster

    No full text
During a disaster, especially at the beginning, a huge amount of information is being communicated by the victims to the authority/rescuer. With the presence of ICT applications and smartphone devices, the communications can be carried out easily. However, these ease of communication created one critical issue that is the reliability of the transmitted information. One of the potential solutions is to use trust algorithm to identify the trusted information. The trust engine can help to filter and verify the reliability and validity of the transmitted information. With the ability to identify trusted information, the authority and rescuer would be able to channel and prioritize their rescue efforts to the more critical disaster areas. A prototype, running on Android platform and Web server, was developed to demonstrate the proposed solution

Combustion and Society: A Fire-Centred History of Energy Use

    No full text
Fire is a force that links everyday human activities to some of the most powerful energetic movements of the Earth. Drawing together the energy-centred social theory of Georges Bataille, the fire-centred environmental history of Stephen Pyne, and the work of a number of ‘pyrotechnology’ scholars, the paper proposes that the generalized study of combustion is a key to contextualizing human energetic practices within a broader ‘economy’ of terrestrial and cosmic energy flows. We examine the relatively recent turn towards fossil-fuelled ‘internal combustion’ in the light of a much longer human history of ‘broadcast’ burning of vegetation and of artisanal pyrotechnologies – the use of heat to transform diverse materials. A combustion-centred analysis, it is argued, brings human collective life into closer contact with the geochemical and geologic conditions of earthly existence, while also pointing to the significance of explorative, experimental and even playful dispositions towards energy and matter. © 2014, SAGE Publications. Kinetic study of mono- and disaccharides by surface plasmon resonance optical sensor / Wan Yusmawati Wan Yusoff, W. Mahmood Mat Yunus and Zainal Abidin Talib

    No full text
In this study, the Kretschmatm surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique is used to investigate the optical properties and kinetic behavior of mono- and disaccharide molecules to the gold surface. Two types of saccharides that are mono- and disaccharides (glucose, maltose and sucrose) in water at different level of concentration have been used in the angle scan SPR measurements. All measurements were carried out at room temperature with He-Ne laser (632.8nm, 5mW) was used as a light source. When the medium outside metal (gold) films is changed from air to saccharide solutions, the resonance at1gle shifted to the higher values. The shifts of resonat1ce angle (Ꝋspp) increased linearly with the saccharides concentration in which the detection limit and detection sensitivity could be quantified. The sensitivity of the detection was 4.68®/(mol/I), 7.40®/(mol/l) and 9.42®/(mol/l) for glucose, maltose and sucrose, respectively. In addition, the detection limit of this optical sensor was estimated to be better than 0.005mol/1 for those three saccharide solutions. The shift of resonance angle (t-.8spp) increased rapidly with time for the first 200 minutes before it reached a constant value. It is noticed that the disaccharide molecules give response 30% better than monosaccharide molecules

Financial planning is exceptionally important, including for younger generations. There are various ways to manage personal finances. Europe Road Trip: The Adventure is one of the tools to help individuals enhance their knowledge and awareness in managing their personal finance. This board game is inspired by Monopoly but with a little bit of twist. Players will need their own spending and earning planning so that they can spend their road trip with joy. This board game is able to fix several problems including lack of financial budgeting and tracking, insufficient emergency fund, lack of discipline and impulse spending. Furthermore, multiple objectives of this board game are also mentioned which can provide the insight of what Europe Road Trip: The Adventure can help in managing funds and debts. Additionally, the uniqueness of this board game is that players will encounter various significant events which will test their decision making for their financial situation, and how they manage debt between the players and the banker. Moreover, with straightforward instructions, Europe Road Trip: The Adventure is easy to play and can be played anywhere at any time while motivating players to be more competitive and expand their knowledge about financial planning

Energy and power estimation for three different locations in Palestine

    No full text
In this paper power energy estimated based on wind speed records in three different areas in Palestine Nablus, Ramallah and Gaza. The main aims of this study to calculate the total amount of power and energy that can produce and to encourage investment in renewable energy in Palestine. Available meteorological data from local weather stations are used to study the wind energy potential in the West Bank (WB) for two sites and Gaza Strip (GS) for one site. The daily average wind speed data for three sites in Palestine analyzed, and fitted to the Weibull probability distribution function. The parameters of Weibull have been calculated by author using Graphical method. This study shed lights on the relationship between the wind energy and power versus the mean wind speed (MWS). The total gathered energy per unit area during 2006 in WB from Nablus site is 927.1 kwhr/m2, whereas 2008.0141 kwhr/m2 from Ramallah site. This significant study to assess the wind energy production in Palestine to encourage investment in renewable energy sectors
