The Company She Keeps A Novel
A novel in six episodes, this stunning debut by Mary McCarthy follows a young intellectual on her reckless bohemian journey through life and dangerous love in 1930s New York City Margaret Sargent is young and fearless, a deep thinker inspired by the bohemian energy that abounds in New York City in the years leading up to the Second World War. With careless abandon, she destroys her marriage and numerous love affairs as she moves through the social circles of artists and writers, playing at the fringes of political extremism. She is an enigma, often wanton and frivolous, but possessing intelligence and a razor-sharp wit, as well as a troubling core of inner darkness, self-doubt, and puzzling tendencies toward self-destruction. For Margaret, urban life in the 1930s is an ongoing adventure-ever-changing, always surprising, and deeply, profoundly unsatisfying. Mary McCarthy, author of the bestselling American classic The Group, burst boldly onto the literary scene with her provocative debut, The Company She Keeps. A brilliant, stylistically inventive novel, it offers a rich portrait of a truly fascinating protagonist in six revealing episodes. Love her, despise her, or fear for her, you will never forget Margaret Sargent. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Mary McCarthy including rare images from the author's estate.Intro -- Cover -- Title Page -- Contents -- ONE Cruel and Barbarous Treatment -- TWO Rogue's Gallery -- THREE The Man in the Brooks Brothers Shirt -- FOUR The Genial Host -- FIVE Portrait of the Intellectual as a Yale Man -- SIX Ghostly Father, I Confess -- Acknowledgements -- A Biography of Mary McCarthy -- CopyrightA novel in six episodes, this stunning debut by Mary McCarthy follows a young intellectual on her reckless bohemian journey through life and dangerous love in 1930s New York City Margaret Sargent is young and fearless, a deep thinker inspired by the bohemian energy that abounds in New York City in the years leading up to the Second World War. A study of KANG,YUN-WEI and her novels
As a Taiwanese female writer in 1960s, Kang Yun-Wei mainly created short novel and prose. Engaged in writing for more than 40 years, she only publishes less than 10 pieces of works. Special life experiences influence themes of her works. She uses unadorned and natural technique to smoothly present ordinary and trivial topics. In spite of limited quantity of works, she still wins many famous masters\ue2 praise due to her distinctive personal style.
This paper aims to conduct comprehensive analysis and investigation of Kang Yun-Wei and her novels, and is composed of six chapters as the following. Chapter 1 is the \ue2Introduction\ue2, which describes motivation, objective, scope and method of the research, review of literatures, and framework of this paper framework. The author determines direction of the present study mainly because there is no academic paper specially investigating Kang Yun-Wei and the female consciousness and marital problems discussed by her have non- negligible significance in Taiwanese women\ue2s novels. Chapter 2 is \ue2Biography and Creation\ue2, which introduces Kang Yun-Wei\ue2s personal experiences and summarizes the background, course and material drawing of her creation. Chapter 3 is \ue2Themes of Novels\ue2, including love, marriage, family, female consciousness raising, friendship, social phenomena and social solicitude. Chapter 4 is \ue2Characters depicted in Novels\ue2, which generalizes different types of female and male characters created in the novels, as well as exquisitely outlines vivid figures from the external to internal. Chapter 5 is \ue2Artistic Techniques of Novels\ue2, which discusses how Kang Yun-Wei skillfully utilizes writing technique to organize source materials and adopts natural, unadorned style to express fine and deep emotion. Chapter 6 is the \ue2Conclusion\ue2, which summarizes research findings and evaluates the value of Kang Yun-Wei and her novels

Sparrows can't sing : East End kith and kinship in the 1960s
Sparrows Can’t Sing (1963) was the only feature film directed by
the late and much lamented Joan Littlewood. Set and filmed in
the East End, where she worked for many years, the film deserves
more attention than it has hitherto received. Littlewood’s career
spanned documentary (radio recordings made with Ewan MacColl
in the North of England in the 1930s) to directing for the stage
and the running of the Theatre Royal in London’s Stratford East,
often selecting material which aroused memories in local audiences
(Leach 2006: 142). Many of the actors trained in her Theatre
Workshop subsequently became better known for their appearances
on film and television. Littlewood herself directed hardly any material
for the screen: Sparrows Can’t Sing and a 1964 series of television
commercials for the British Egg Marketing Board, starring Theatre
Workshop’s Avis Bunnage, were rare excursions into an area of practice
which she found constraining and unamenable (Gable 1980: 32).
The hybridity and singularity of Littlewood’s feature may answer,
in some degree, for its subsequent neglect. However, Sparrows Can’t
Sing makes a significant contribution to a group of films made in
Britain in the 1960s which comment generally on changes in the
urban and social fabric. It is especially worthy of consideration,
I shall argue, for the use which Littlewood made of a particular
community’s attitudes – sentimental and critical – to such changes and
for its amalgamation of an attachment to documentary techniques
(recording an aural landscape on location) with a preference for nonnaturalistic
delivery in performance

A Study of Qing Zhen’sechnique of Writing Ci as Rhapsodies
This thesis will use the idea of “writing ci (詞) as rhapsodies (賦)” to discuss the artistic influences on and innovations of the Zhenqing ci (清真詞) as well as the distinct features of this work in order to look at the linguistic patterns and strategies Zhou Bangyan (周邦彥) uses in his ci. efore discussing the influence of this idea on Zhou’s ci, it will be necessary to discuss what is meant by “writing ci as rhapsodies”, and the general trend towards the “rhapsodification” of the ci genre throughout the Song dynasty. We will see that Zhou’s style of ci builds on the trend towards rhapsodification already begun by authors such as Liu Yong (柳永). While Zhou certainly emulates these earlier writers, he also develops his own distinct style of ci, thus giving the notion of “writing ci as rhapsodies” new meaning and a broader perspective. In Zhou’s ci, both artistic technique and aesthetic feel are articulated through this method of “writing ci as rhapsodies”. Having dealt with the historical context, we will move on to focus on these two aspects, technique and feel, of Zhou’s works.e will show that the creative impulse for the rhapsodification of ci in Zhenqing ci stems from the ease with which the genres of rhapsody and ci meld into one another. This allows Zhou to employ the characteristics of the rhapsody while preserving the aesthetic qualities and linguistic rhythms of the ci. All of this goes to show why the Zhenqing ci has been known as the “father of the wanyue ci” (婉約詞宗) since the Song dynasty. Namely, the work incorporates the strengths of previous writers in the genre to complete the a style that dominated the community of ci writers during the Southern Song dynasty and continued to have influence into the Qing dynasty.
