Combining methodologies of archival research and textual analysis from the fields of literature, women and gender studies, history, art history, and landscape architecture, this interdisciplinary study focuses on garden poetry by gentry women from the 17th to early 20th centuries. It explores how garden poetry enabled these women, conventionally expected to be confined in the domestic realm, to produce poetic spaces for multiple purposes, such as mediating their subject construction and gender relations, engaging in social-political discourse, and eventually carving a place for women’s voices in the subgenre of Chinese literature. From the perspectives of the domestic space, social and public space, and pictorial space, this study examines poems about family gardens (17th cent.), diverse gardens within a city (17th-18th cent.), and garden paintings (18th-early 20th cent.). It reveals that garden poems present multifaceted aspects of gentry women’s changing lives during the late imperial period, shedding light on their experiences, roles, and aspirations. On the one hand, gentlewomen played the gendered roles defined by the Confucian orthodoxy in the garden, an extension of the inner chamber; on the other hand, they formed different social groupings and strategically engaged in worldly affairs through garden writing. In their poetic output of gardens, the female poets assumed different personae to respond to the Ming-Qing transition, enriched the literary geography of the culturally inscribed Hangzhou city, redefined their conventionally subordinate position in artistic representations of gardens, and provided a female perspective on the modernization of Chinese garden culture. These physical, textual, and pictorial garden spaces, which were embedded in familial, cultural, and political changes, enriched women poets’ creations as authors and afforded their agency as gentlewomen in the late imperial literati circle

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Analysis of Supercomputers and Development of a Novel Network

    As supercomputers have reached nearly 300,000 cores with 2 petaflops in Linpack performance in June 2010, energy consumption and temperature control are posing a developmental bottleneck. We retrospectively and comparatively examine all of the available data contained in the Green500 list that launched in November 2007, and the Top500 list, and propose a novel representation and analysis of the data, highlighting major evolutionary trends.With these new insights, we introduce a new technique for generating more efficient networks by systematically interlacing bypass rings to torus networks (iBT networks). The resulting network can improve the original torus network by reducing the network diameter, node-to-node distances, and by increasing the bisection width without increasing wiring and other engineering complexity. We present and analyze the statement that a 3D iBT network proposed by our technique outperforms 4D torus networks of the same node degree. We found that interlacing rings of sizes 6 and 12 to all three dimensions of a torus network with meshes 30 30 36 generates the best network of all possible networks, including 4D torus and hypercube of approximately 32,000 nodes. This demonstrates that strategically interlacing bypass rings into a 3D torus network enhances the torus network more effectively than adding a fourth dimension, although we may generalize the claim.     Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    An Algebraic Representation of the Task Mapping for Parallel Computing

    Task mapping has been explored intensively by computer and computational scientists for the purposes of maximizing utilization of computing resources by reducing communication and load imbalance. Task mapping is known to be NP-complete as a combinatorial optimization problem and, thus, many efforts intending to search for optimal solutions are not succeeding. All proposed mapping models to date represent parallel computers and applications as graphs with the networking capability abstracted as a supply matrix whose entries represent the inter-node communication costs and the communication requirements of the sub-tasks abstracted as a demand matrix whose entries represent the inter-subtask communication loads. The model is to minimize the objective function, defined as the hop-bytes metric. However, this hop-bytes metric is always written as a sum of the element-by-element products of the network supply and application demand matrices. This native and somewhat naive approach completely neglects the enormous symmetries in most networks and many applications and thus requires a huge number of unnecessary optimization steps. This thesis proposes a new formulation to investigate static task assignment. We develop a new formulation, by aid of eigen-analysis, to alleviate this very shortcoming of the past models. As expected, our formulation helps reduce the optimization steps in finding solution of the objective function. The extent of the speedup is not easily obtainable through analytical means but numerical experiments of mapping a suite of benchmarks, HPCC and NPB, onto 3D torus networks demonstrated that the simulated annealing process converges substantially faster with our new simulation than with the standard graph theory-based ones.Advisor(s): Yuefan Deng.
