Appropriations of Irish drama by modern Korean nationalist theatre : a focus on the influence of Sean O’Casey in a colonial context
My thesis explores how a translated author on the periphery of the host culture’s
translated repertoire can be at once subversive and innovative on the colonial scene,
using as an example the case of Sean O’Casey in colonial Korea. It explores the
importation of Irish drama in modern Korean theatre during the colonial period and
examines the appropriations of O’Casey’s plays by a central Korean playwright, Yu
Chi-jin, in creating his own plays. Under Japanese colonial rule in the early twentieth
century, intellectuals perceived the supreme task for the Korean people to be the
recovery of national sovereignty and independence. The modern Korean theatre
movement which rose among Korean intellectuals and dramatists during the colonial
period was to play a major part in this task. The ultimate goal of this movement was
to establish a modern national theatre promoting Korean culture and educating the
people, thereby recovering national independence. As their modernised dramatic
polysystem was still "young", Korean intellectuals and dramatists who were
involved in the theatre movement had to borrow dramatic models from other
countries. One of the models they chose was Irish playwrights, especially those who
were involved in the Irish dramatic movement. They published or staged the works
of W.B. Yeats, Lord Dunsany [Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett], Augusta
Gregory, J.M. Synge, St. J. Ervine, T.C. Murray and Sean O'Casey. Although
O'Casey was considered an important dramatist in the Irish dramatic movement, he
was a playwright on the periphery in the list of translated Irish dramatists in Korea
due to the colonisers’ censorship. However, he remained as a subversive and
innovative playwright on the colonial scene by virtue of being appropriated by Yu
Chi-jin who used O’Casey’s plays as models when creating his own works. In
discussing the subject matter of my thesis, I use Even Zohar’s polysystems theory as
a starting point in looking at ideological issues surrounding translation and extend
the discussion to offer a postcolonial perspective. While most translation in a
colonial context was considered as "an expression of the cultural power of the
colonisers," my thesis shifts the focus to translation as an expression of the cultural
power of the colonised. I explore how the colonised uses another colonised culture to
subvert the colonisers’ power
Environment and Human Behavior Learning for Robot Motion Control

Weo not use a pre-defined decision tree to classify the environment in the ND method. Also,e do not solve the reward function in the imitation learning method. Instead, we try toind a mapping from the environment information to the human’s control behavior.ur system is simply described below. Several users are asked to control the robot atirst. Then, the environment information and users’ control data are gathered as trainingata. The incremental K-means method is used to classify the training data into differentituations, such as straight or turns. We use the concept of scale-invariant feature transformSIFT) in computer vision. A SIFT-like temporal feature is proposed to mark the differentituations and try to eliminate noise. The Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost) algorithms applied to train one classifier for each situation. Abstract
This easy is the program notes of Chiao-Yu Huang\ue2s Vocal Recital held on May, 17, 2022 in the form of academic report. The works of the program were composed by five composers who belong to Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods separately. The languages of the program include Latin, Italian, German and Chinese. THE MATERIALIZATION OF HSI-YU-CHI
Hsi-yu-chi (西遊記) consists of two main motifs, one of which is from Chinese myth. Hsüan-tsang (玄奘), having crossed a river on the last leg of his trip, looked back and found his own body floating on the water. This means that his body had died and his spirit arrived at the other world, which is identified with Mt. K'un-lun (崑崙) surrounded by Jo-shui (弱水) or deep water. This mountain is considered to be the place where human beings return after death. Hsüan-tsang's followers, such as Sun Wu-k'ung (孫悟空), a monkey, and Chu Pa-chieh (猪八戒), a pig, are regarded as guides to the other world as well as animals that are believed to dwell in Jo-shui. Ancient people realized that world through their own religious experiences. Therefore Hsüan-tsang's arrival at that world also means that he reached the sphere of deliverance with his followers helping him to do it. The other motif is from Buddhism. The destination of Hsüan-tsang's trip was Mt. Ling-chiu (靈鷲), a paradise in Buddhist belief. He entered Nirvana there after his death, which also means he attained deliverance. The roles of the animals as his followers were to guide him to paradise and at the same time to help him attain deliverance. These two motifs permeate the Hsi-yu-chi in close association. It is Sun Wu-k'ung that plays the most active part in the Hsi-yu chi. Thus when we investigate the materialization of Hsi-yu-chi, we should pay particular attention to the communal worship of monkeys. Some groups of people worshipped monkeys as their ancestors and at festivals they would often be possessed by their spirits. They illustrated these experiences in stories of monkeys guiding them to the other world. Also, at Buddhist temples the monkey is worshipped as a protector of Buddhism and is considered a guide to paradise or to deliverance. These two different aspects, one regarding the monkey as an ancestor of a community and the other regarding it as a protector of Buddhism, mingled with each other and brought forth the original Hsi-yu-chi around the T'ang (唐) dynasty. Later, Hsüan-tsang's trip to India, which was a historical fact, was introduced into the story. This trip is the third, but less important, motif. The literary texture of the Hsi-yu-Chi was gradually enriched in the course of time, until the story reached its complete form in the Ming (明) Dynasty
The Juan-juan(蠕蠕)'s Invasion to Kidara-Kušan
The articles on Greater-yueh-shih (大月氏) State, and Lesser yueh-shih (小月氏) State in Hsi-yu-chuan (西域傳), Wei-shu (魏書) are thought to be reliable as the historical sources, comparing with the corresponding parts in T'ung-tien (通典) and T'ai-p'ing-huan-yu-chi (太平寰宇記) which are considered to have survived from the original edition written by Wei-shou (魏收). According to these records on Ta-yueh-shih State, Chi-to-lo (寄多羅), the King of the state, moved the capital westward from Lu-chien-shih (盧監氏) Castle to Po-lo (薄羅) Castle on account of the Juan-juan's invasion. "Chi-to-lo" and "Lu-chien-shih" Castle can be identified. the one with "Kidara", a term which is found in the Greek sources and in a series of Kusan coins; and the other with "Balkh". The author agrees with J. Marquart's opinion that Po-lo Castle was situated at Balkan, in the southeast corner of the Caspian sea. The article on Hsiao-yueh-shih State in Wei-shu, the current edition, states that Chi-to-lo's migration to the west was caused by the invasion of the "Hsung-nu" (匈奴). But the author supposes that Wei-shou himself must have written "Juan-juan", not "Hsung-nu" in his original edition, judging from the fact that the word "Juan-juan" occurs in the corresponding position both in the texts of the T'ung-tien and T'ai-p'ing-huan-yu-chi. Moreover the Juan-juan's invasion of Ta-yueh-shih State can be dated about 437 A.D. when the Juan-juan extended their power in the west, as far as the Ephtalite. Marquart says in his article that the Hsiao-yueh-shih State was founded by Kunghas, the son of Kidara, about 468 A.D. when he was defeated by the Persians. But in the opinion of the author, it was founded by Kidara to whom another son, not Kunghas, succeeded after Kidara was driven out of the Lu-chien-shih Castle
Wen-Chi Chang Oboe Recital Program Notes
The essay is the program notes of Wen-Chi Chang`s Oboe Recital which was performed on May 9th, 2019. The recital includes four different periods of oboe repertoire, baroque period, classical music period, romantic music period, and modern music period. The recital opened with Antonio Lucio Vivaldi: Oboe Concerto in D Major, RV. 453, Vivaldi was the most important Italian composer and violinist in the Baroque period. His numerous works are in a great astonishment which are including various genres. The second peice is Domenico Cimarosa: Oboe Concerto in C Major, Cimarosa is the most famous Italian opera composer in the 18th century. His opera works are mainly comedy.
\ue3\ue3 The second half of the recital was opened with Charles Camille Saint-Sa\uc3\uabns: Sonata for oboe and Piano, Op. 166, Saint-Sa\uc3\uabns was a French composer, keyboardist and music educator. He has created many important musical works and has a profound influence on future generations. And ended was Paul Hindemith: Sonata for Oboe and Piano, Hindemith was the most representative German composer in the early twentieth century, and an outstanding music performer and music educator. In this program notes article, I will use these four musical works as the topic to overview the life of the four composers, the background of the music composition and the interpretation of each works
Doping polythiophene derivatives with tridecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrooctyl trichlorosilane vapor
A conducting polymer system of derivatives of polythiophene has been achieved by doping with tridecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrooctyl trichlorosilane (TTT). After doping, conductivities of both polymers, poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly[2,5-bis(3-decabutylthiophene-2-yl)thieno(2,3-b)thiophenes] (PBTTT), increased by over five orders of magnitude. We observed non-homogeneous swelling of the polymer film using atomic force microsopy and other microscopic methods. We also showed that under certain conditions the doping was reversible. Based on an analysis of the UV-Vis spectra and other data, it seems that the dedoping was almost complete. We demonstrated that dedoping could be efficiently facilitated by exposing the films to light. We also observed large protrusions on the surface of some samples that could be explained as a mixture of polymer and organic solvent. The Stimmungen eines Faus Op. 11 f\uc3\ubcr Klarinette solo by Ilse Fromm-Michaels is a three-movement work with one of the \ue2expression\ue2 which leaves the audiences space of imagination. An important work in the twentieth century, the Concerto Pour clarinette et Orchestre de chambre by Eug\uc3\ua8ne Bozza has challenges to the players with it\ue2s high-level techniques and the unique composition style. Claude Debussy\ue2s Premi\uc3\ua9re Rhapsodie pour clarinette en si b\uc3\ua9mol was commissioned by the Conservatoire national sup\uc3\ua9rieur de musique et de danse de Paris as an examination piece for graduating Clarinet students. The changes of the tempo and the timbre highlight the piece. Alamiro Giampiere\ue2s Il Carnevale di Venezia Capriccio Variato is a theme and variations depicting the happy scenes during the Carnival of Venice. Arthur Honnegger\ue2s Sonatine pour clarinette en la & piano is a three-movement piece. A special technique \ue2Glissando\ue2 is used in his third movement showing a different musical style. This program notes present the biography of the composers, musical background, and interpretation of the above five pieces that I played in my solo recital
