    Novel View Synthesis With Skip Connections

    Novel view synthesis is the task of synthesizing an image of an object at an arbitrary viewpoint given one or a few views of the object [1]. The output image of novel view synthesis exhibits a significant structural change from the input. Because of the large change, the skip connections or U-Net architecture, which can sustain the multi-level characteristics of the input images, cannot be directly utilized for the novel view synthesis [2]. In this paper, we investigate several variations of skip connection on two widely used novel view synthesis modules, pixel generation [1] and flow prediction [3]. For pixel generation, we find that the combination of the skip connections with flow-based hard attention is helpful. On the other hand, flow prediction enjoys marginal benefit from skip connections in deeper layers. Our pipeline suggests how to make use of skip connections on tasks that involve large geometric changes.N

    Multifunctional Nanofiber Arrays Templated from Liquid Crystal Films via Chemical Vapor Polymerization

    Surfaces decorated with oriented arrays of fibers are ubiquitous in the natural world because they can provide functions such as sensing (hair cells), thermal insulation (polar bear fur), enhanced mass transport (microtubules), extreme wetting properties (lotus leaf), and reversible adhesion (gecko foot). However, recreation of these functions in synthetic materials requires multiscale engineering processes that enable control over the composition, shape and morphology of individual fibers as well as control over higher order organization of fibers into arrays. For example, extrusion, electrospinning and microdrawing are manufacturing processes widely used to create fibrous polymer mats, but these approaches offer limited access to oriented arrays of nanometer-scale fibers with controlled size, shape and lateral organization. In this presentation, I will introduce our recent discovery that chemical vapor polymerization can be performed on surfaces coated with thin films of liquid crystals to synthesize organized assemblies of end-attached polymer nanofibers.[1] Significantly, the approach enables access to nanofiber arrays with complex, yet precisely defined structures and compositions. We also demonstrate the nanofiber arrays to permit tailoring of a wide range of functional properties, including wetting, conductivity, optical properties, biodegradability, biological interactions, and adhesion that depends on nanofiber chirality. CONCLUSION 16 REFERENCES 17 - 국문 요약 - 19MasterBACKGROUND CONTEXT: Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN), caused by irritation of the glosspharyngeal nerve, can be devastating to the patient, with lancinating pain that can be triggered by simple daily actions such as chewing and swallowing that proper treatment is necessary. However, treatment of GPN is difficult, more medically intractable compared to other cranial rhizopathies that operation is often considered for cure. Microvascular decompression (MVD) in GPN patients are known to show fine outcome, but due to its rarity, not enough reports have been made to prove efficacy and safety of the MVD over other treatments. Recurrence after MVD have also been noted. PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome of patients who underwent operation for MVD of GPN via new sling technique for better outcome, along with review of literatures. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study of patients who underwent same operation under the same diagnosis. METHODS: This single-institution retrospective analysis included 22 glossopharyngeal neuralgia patients who received MVD from 1996 to 2012. The operation was performed by a single experienced surgeon with retromastoid craniotomy via lateral suboccipital approach. Decompression method involved were transposition with glue for eight (36.4%) patients, transposition with sling for seven (31.8%) in those with very tortuous offenders, and interposition for those with many perforating vessels that made transposition impossible. RESULTS: Preoperative symptoms were relieved immediately after the operation in all patients, and no recurrence has occurred so far during the follow-ups. Postoperative complications occurred in 5 of the 22 patients, all transient, and there was no surgical mortality. CONCLUSION: Glossopharyngeal neuralgia can be safely and affectively treated by MVD, and adequate decompression of the offender is an important factor directly contributing to increased success rate of this surgery. Fibrin glue-coated Teflon sling can contribute to good outcome of the MVD operation by aiding in successful transposition of the offending vessels that may be too tortuous to be affectively decompressed by conventional techniques

    Transferable silicon nanowire arrays embedded in flexible polymer for color tuning with metal insulator metal structure

These structures are comprised of a polymer embedded silicon nanowire arrays (Si NWAs) stacked on a metal/insulator/metal (MIM) cavity. Upon stacking the Si NWAs on the MIM cavity, these cyan, magenta and yellow colors can be tuned to a color gamut by varying parameters of the Si NWAs such as diameter, height and periods. The fine tuning of these colors were explained on the basis of the measured reflectance spectra, which was further supported by the theoretical simulations

    SAUM: Symmetry-Aware Upsampling Module for Consistent Point Cloud Completion

    Point cloud completion estimates the complete shape given incomplete point cloud, which is a crucial task as the raw point cloud measurements suffer from missing data. Most of previous methods for point cloud completion share the encoder-decoder structure, where the encoder projects the raw point cloud into low-dimensional latent space and the decoder decodes the condensed latent information back into the list of points. While the low-dimensional projection extracts semantic features to guide the global completion of the missing data, the unique local geometric details observed from partial data are often lost. In this paper, we propose a shape completion framework that maintains both of the global context and the local characteristics. Our network is composed of two complementary prediction branches. One of the branches fills the unseen parts with the global context learned from the database model, which can be replaced by any of the conventional shape completion network. The other branch, which we refer as a Symmetry-Aware Upsampling Module (SAUM), conservatively maintains the geometric details given the observed partial data, clearly utilizing the symmetry for the shape completion. Experimental results show that the combination of the two prediction branches enables more plausible shape completion for point clouds than the state-of-the-art approaches (Code available on https://github.com/countywest/SAUM ).N
