Heterogeneous and tissue-specific regulation of effector T cell responses by IFN-gamma during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection.
IFN-γ and T cells are both required for the development of experimental cerebral malaria during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection. Surprisingly, however, the role of IFN-γ in shaping the effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response during this infection has not been examined in detail. To address this, we have compared the effector T cell responses in wild-type and IFN-γ(-/-) mice during P. berghei ANKA infection. The expansion of splenic CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells during P. berghei ANKA infection was unaffected by the absence of IFN-γ, but the contraction phase of the T cell response was significantly attenuated. Splenic T cell activation and effector function were essentially normal in IFN-γ(-/-) mice; however, the migration to, and accumulation of, effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the lung, liver, and brain was altered in IFN-γ(-/-) mice. Interestingly, activation and accumulation of T cells in various nonlymphoid organs was differently affected by lack of IFN-γ, suggesting that IFN-γ influences T cell effector function to varying levels in different anatomical locations. Importantly, control of splenic T cell numbers during P. berghei ANKA infection depended on active IFN-γ-dependent environmental signals--leading to T cell apoptosis--rather than upon intrinsic alterations in T cell programming. To our knowledge, this is the first study to fully investigate the role of IFN-γ in modulating T cell function during P. berghei ANKA infection and reveals that IFN-γ is required for efficient contraction of the pool of activated T cells
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Risk factors for new-onset low back disability among Japanese workers: results from the Culture and Psychosocial Influences on Disability (CUPID) study in Crete
Methods As a part of the international CUPID study, we followed up 955 workers (651 men; mean age 37.0 years), who at baseline had been free from LBP for ?1 year. At baseline, information was collected about demographic variables, musculoskeletal pain at different anatomical sites, occupational physical activities, and psychosocial risk factors. Subsequent occurrence of LBP and associated disability was ascertained by a follow-up questionnaire after 1 year. LBD was defined as LBP interfering with work or leading to sick-leave. Associations between risk factors and incident LBD were assessed by logistic regression. Results 6.1% of the workers developed LBD during the follow- up period. History of LBP, occupational physical activities (e.g., climbing up or down more than 30 flights of stairs per day, bending and twisting for ?4 h per day), frequent and severe neck or shoulder discomfort, inadequate breaks at work, and ?60 h of work per week were statistically significant risk factors of new-onset LBD. Conclusions The observed associations with long working hours and frequent and severe neck or shoulder discomfort (which is a common somatising symptom in the Japanese) indicate a role of psychosocial as well as physical risk factors in the development of LBD

Among them, cytokine-induced Src homology 2 (SH2) protein (CIS) was found to inhibit the interleukin 3– and erythropietin-mediated STAT5 signaling pathway. However, involvement of SOCS proteins in other signaling pathways is still unknown. This study shows that the expression of CIS is selectively induced in T cells after T cell receptor (TCR) stimulation. In transgenic mice, with selective expression of CIS in CD4 T cells, elevated CIS strongly promotes TCR-mediated proliferation and cytokine production in vitro, and superantigen-induced T cell activation in vivo. Forced expression of CIS also prolongs survival of CD4 T cells after TCR activation. Molecular events immediately downstream from the TCR are not changed in CIS-expressing CD4 T cells, but activation of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathways by TCR stimulation is significantly enhanced. Together with the increased MAP kinase activation, a direct interaction of CIS and protein kinase Cθ was also demonstrated. These results suggest that CIS is one of the important regulators of TCR-mediated T cell activation. The functions of CIS, enhancing TCR signaling and inhibiting cytokine signaling, may be important in the regulation of immune response and homeostasis.The Swedish Medical Council, the Foundation for Strategic Research

Measuring industry-science links through inventor-author relations: A profiling method
In this pilot study we examine the performance of text-based profiling in recovering a set of validated inventor-author links. In a first step we match patents and publications solely based on their similarity in content. Next, we compare inventor and author names on the highest ranked matches for the occurrence of name matches. Finally, we compare these candidate matches with the names listed in a validated set of inventor-author names. Our text-based profile methodology performs significantly better than a random matching of patents and publications, suggesting that text-based profiling is a valuable complementary tool to the name searches used in previous studies.innovation; industry-science links; text-based profiling;
Full-Stack End-to-End mmWave Simulations Using 3GPP and NYUSIM Channel Model in ns-3
Accurate channel modeling and simulation tools are vital for studying sub-THz and millimeter (mmWave) wideband communication system performance. To accurately design future high data rate, low latency wireless modems, the entire protocol stack must be appropriately modeled to understand how the physical layer impacts the end-to-end performance experienced by the end user. This paper presents a full stack end-to-end performance analysis in ns-3 using drop-based NYU channel model (NYUSIM) and 3GPP statistical channel model (SCM) in scenarios, namely urban microcell (UMi), urban macrocell (UMa), rural macrocell (RMa), and indoor hotspot (InH) at 28 GHz with 100 MHz bandwidth. Video data is transmitted at 50 Mbps using User Datagram Protocol (UDP), and we observe that the RMa channel is benign in non-line of sight (NLOS) for NYUSIM and 3GPP SCM as it exhibits no packet drops and yields maximum throughput (48.1 Mbps) and latency of ∼ 20 ms. In NLOS, for NYUSIM, the UMa and RMa channels are similar in terms of throughput and packet drops, and the latency in UMi and InH scenarios is 10 times and 25 times higher respectively compared to UMa. Our results indicate that mmWave bands can support data rates of 50 Mbps with negligible packet drops and latency below 150 ms in all scenarios using NYUSIM
