    Hypothalamic glucose-sensing mechanisms

    No full text
Chronic metabolic diseases, including diabetes and obesity, have become a major global health threat of the twenty-first century. Maintaining glucose homeostasis is essential for survival in mammals. Complex and highly coordinated interactions between glucose-sensing mechanisms and multiple effector systems are essential for controlling glucose levels in the blood. The central nervous system (CNS) plays a crucial role in regulating glucose homeostasis. Growing evidence indicates that disruption of glucose sensing in selective CNS areas, such as the hypothalamus, is closely interlinked with the pathogenesis of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the underlying intracellular mechanisms of glucose sensing in the hypothalamus remain elusive. Here, we review the current literature on hypothalamic glucose-sensing mechanisms and discuss the impact of alterations of these mechanisms on the pathogenesis of diabetes. aE Journal 2015/2016: aE/INTECTURE innovating architecture

    No full text
The graduation studio of Architectural Engineering focuses on the integration of (new) technology in architecture. For this purpose, the name aE/ INTECTURE® was devised, which will be developed further as a brand in the coming years. Students start with a technical fascination and translate this into an architectural concept, finally being able to implement this within the environment in a responsible way. ‘If technology is the answer, what is the question?‘ Under the guidance of a team of enthusiastic (guest) lecturers, students search for the dot on the horizon that is necessary for coming up with solutions that improve the quality of the built environment and make it more sustainable. In addition, either the ‘making‘ (make) or ‘the energy and material flow’ (flow) is used and applied as a basis in different contexts.Architectural Engineerin

The Inbetweeners: The Korean Animation Industry Negotiates the Global and the National

This thesis examines the (South) Korean animation industry in between the global and the national. Since the 1990s, the Korean animation industry has tried to shift from being a subordinated ‘in-betweener’ (i.e. subcontracting for the USA and Japan) to becoming an autonomous agent (i.e. producing its own animations). What exactly initiated this change? Can it be perhaps understood as the response to the globalisation process? Or, can it be, in fact, Korea’s constantly contested nationalism under the guise of capital force of globalisation? How does this change our understanding of globalisation as process? More importantly, how do animators experience globalisation in their daily lives and work conditions? To answer these questions, the thesis focuses on (1) how the local creative industry recognises and realises the dynamics between the global and national; (2) how the local creative producers experience negotiating local and global values in their daily lives and work. As Korea is a globally challenged nation with constantly contested national identity, the Korean animation industry is a potent site for examining ambivalent identity formation through these ‘in-between’ negotiation processes. People’s everyday experiences and ‘emotional’ struggles in-between the two major forces of nationalism and globalisation have been relatively neglected in research so far. This focus leads me to suggest the idea of ‘in-between’ not just as subcontracting but as a concept. In contrast to celebration of hybridity as ambivalence and/or resistance to both globalisation and nationalism, ‘in-betweeness’ captures the subjective experience generated from hybridity and realised through social and emotional tension in lived experiences and work. Being in-between is understood as a negotiation, transition and dis/juncture of different experiences of globalisation, along which Korean animators experience conflicts, dilemmas and confusion and hesitations about which direction to head in. It results in the creation of an ambivalent and often agonized in between identity

A construção das imagens discursivas da personagem Yoon Se-Ri no K-Drama Pousando no amor

This research aims to analyze the discursive images of the character Yoon Se-ri in the K-drama Pousando no Amor available on the Netflix streaming platform. This analysis will be based on the concept of ethos by Ferreira (2015) and Mosca (2001), going through the construction of these ethos throughout the series. In addition, the assumptions by Amossy (2013) and Maingueneau (2013) regarding the pre-discursive ethos and stereotyping will be fundamental for the analysis concerning this work, since we previously built the image of this character based on what we already know about the culture Korean and the themes usually addressed in Asian dramas. This pre-construction was not met, at first, because the character was characterized as outside the traditionalist pattern due to her behavior shown in the first episode. Another important aspect in this work is the observation of figures of speech assumed by Guimarães (1997) and Santana and Mariano (2013), making it possible to observe how these figures were used in our corpus. Itabaian

H-1 and K-39 spin-lattice relaxation, ionic motion and Raman processes in the proton conducting KHSeO4 single crystal

The spin-lattice relaxation rates of H-1 and K-39 nuclei in KHSeO4 crystals were studied in the temperature range 160-400 K. The spin-lattice relaxation recovery of H-1 nucleus in this crystal can be represented with a single exponential function, and the relaxation T-1(-1) curve of H-1 can be represented with the Bloembergen-Purcell-Pound (BPP) function. The relaxation process of K-39 with dominant quadrupole relaxation can be described by a linear combination of two exponential functions. T-1(-1) for the K-39 nucleus was found to have a very strong temperature dependence, T-1(-1) = beta T-7. Rapid variations in relaxation rates are associated with critical fluctuations in the electronic spin system. The T-7 temperature dependence of the Raman relaxation rate is shown here to be due to phonon-magnon coupling. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

The author is to be congratulated on her ability to take such a rigorous open-minded outlook and inspiring approach to examining the influence of animation and the moving image in contemporary architecture. With its emphasis on Disney and the spirit of hedonism and consumption of our time, Animation: Form Follows Fun expands the conceptual critical boundaries of architecture and should be regarded as an essential book for exploring the psychological and aesthetic aspects of architecture throughout history. It is also a useful addition to the literature that helps us to understand the deep influence of animation not only as part of our visual culture but also as a fundamental resource for the expression of contemporary imagination
