The politics of fashion: perceptions of power in female clothing and ornamentation as reflected in the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei

This thesis examines issues of female power and influence in sixteenth-century China focusing on how women and their roles were perceived in the changing social environment of the mid-late Ming dynasty. Using aspects of a New Historicist approach, information from contemporary literary and historical sources are analysed alongside each other. With its emphasis on the lives of women and preoccupation with the description of material objects, the late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei forms an important element in the thesis. China in the sixteenth century saw expanding urbanisation, the emergence of a new wealthy merchant class, increasing visibility of women and a questioning of traditional morality. Fashion consciousness, as one of the most conspicuous aspects of the new material culture, is a possible indicator of these trends. Traditional Western theories contend that fashion began in the particular context of Renaissance Europe. However, this study argues that a similar fashion awareness existed in China too, and was manifested in a competitive striving for social status, in this case specifically among women. In contrast to previous studies which downplayed the impact women had on defining traditional Chinese culture, this thesis demonstrates how women and their sartorial choices began to redefine the boundaries of material culture, influencing literati discourse which, in turn, re- influenced female behaviour

Bu çalışmada Ba Jin'in yazmış olduğu Aile (家—Jia), Bahar (春—Chun) ve Güz (秋—Qiu) romanlarındaki ana karakterler ve ana karakterler çevresinde kurgulanan olaylar incelenerek, romanlara konu olan Gao ailesini dağılmaya götüren sebepler ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır.Family saga novels have been very important in both classical Chinese literature and modern Chinese literature. Ba Jin (1904-2005), one of the most important names in modern Chinese literature, has many works in family theme. The most successful work of the author, in family saga genre of literature, is the Jiliu Trilogy. This trio consisting of Jia (Family), Chun (Spring) and Qiu (Autumn) holds a mirror on the family structure and traditional Chinese culture of the first quarter of the twentieth century. In this study, the main characters in the Jia (Family), Chun (Spring) and Qiu (Autumn) novels written by Ba Jin, and the events that were arranged around the main characters, were investigated and tried to reveal the reasons leading to the Gao family's disintegration

Iterative Reconstruction for Bioluminescence Tomography with Total Variation Regularization

    No full text
Bioluminescence tomography(BLT) is an instrumental molecular imaging modality designed for the 3D location and quantification of bioluminescent sources distribution in vivo. In our context, the diffusion approximation(DA) to radiative transfer equation(RTE) is utilized to model the forward process of light propagation. Mathematically, the solution uniqueness does not hold for DA-based BLT which is an inverse source problem of partial differential equations and hence is highly ill-posed. In the current work, we concentrate on a general regularization framework for BLT with Bregman distance as data fidelity and total variation(TV) as regularization. Two specializations of the Bregman distance, the least squares(LS) distance and Kullback-Leibler(KL) divergence, which correspond to the Gaussian and Poisson environments respectively, are demonstrated and the resulting regularization problems are denoted as LS+TV and KL+TV. Based on the constrained Landweber(CL) scheme and expectation maximization(EM) algorithm for BLT, iterative algorithms for the LS+ TV and KL+TV problems in the context of BLT are developed, which are denoted as CL-TV and EM-TV respectively. They are both essentially gradient-based algorithms alternatingly performing the standard CL or EM iteration step and the TV correction step which requires the solution of a weighted ROF model. Chambolle's duality-based approach is adapted and extended to solving the weighted ROF subproblem. Numerical experiments for a 3D heterogeneous mouse phantom are carried out and preliminary results are reported to verify and evaluate the proposed algorithms. It is found that for piecewise-constant sources both CL-TV and EM-TV outperform the conventional CL and EM algorithms for BLT.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000322824000076&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Engineering, BiomedicalOpticsEICPCI-S(ISTP)

Does corruption relieve foreign investors of the burden of taxes and capital controls?

In a sample of fourteen source countries making bilateral investments in forty five countries, the author finds that taxes, capital controls, and corruption, all have large, statistically significant negative effects on foreign investment. Moreover, there is no robust support in the data for the"efficient grease"hypothesis - that corruption helps attract foreign investment by reducing firms'tax burden and the irritant of capital controls.International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Capital Markets and Capital Flows,Decentralization,Fiscal&Monetary Policy,Economic Theory&Research,Economic Theory&Research,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Governance Indicators,National Governance,Capital Flows

Justification of Induction: Russell and Jin Yuelin. A Comparative Study

    No full text
Jin Yuelin (1895-1984), a Chinese logician and philosopher, is greatly influenced by Hume's and Russell's philosophies. How should we respond to Hume's problem of induction? This is an important clue to understand Jin's whole philosophical career. The first section of this paper gives a brief historical review of Russell and Jin. The second section outlines Hume's skeptical arguments against causality and induction. The third section expounds Russell's justification of induction by discussing his views on Hume's skepticism, causality, principle of induction, and empirical postulates. The fourth section clarifies Jin's justification of induction by discussing his critique of Hume's epistemology and his arguments for the reliability of causality and the eternal truth and apriority of the principle of induction. The final section compares Jin's justification of induction with Russell's and concludes that there are similarities and differences between their projects and that both their attempts fail. This paper takes the similar responses to the problem of induction by Jin and Russell to demonstrate the communication that there has been between Chinese philosophers and the Western ones.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000310146900004&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701EthicsHistory & Philosophy Of ScienceLogicPhilosophyA&HCISCI(E)0ARTICLE4353-3783

Economic System for Vietnam: Social Welfare System

    No full text
The Vietnamese economy is similar to the Korean economy in the later half of the 1980s in terms of income and economic structure. Therefore, today’s policy makers in Vietnam has similar issues and problems policy makers in Korea had faced in the past. In particular, they concern about advanced human resource, public sector reform, and economic policies to upgrade their economic structure. This book compares today’s Vietnam to Korea’s past in five areas. Chapter 1 estimates developmental gap between two countries, and provides policy measures for Vietnam not to fall into middle-income-trap. Chapter 2 introduces concept of economic system, and analyze social welfare system. Korea has introduced social welfare system in the 1980s, and gradually expanded it. While health insurance system of Korea is evaluated as a success case, the national pension system is evaluated as a failure case. Based on Korean experiences, the author is providing policy suggestions for the Vietnamese social welfare system. Chapter 3 analyze prudent macroeconomic policies for economic growth and financial market development. In particular, based on two economic crises Korea had experienced, the author suggests macroprudent capital flow, prevention of household debt, and effective way to utilize foreign capital. Chapter 4 emphasizes fair competition, SOE reform, and improving international competitiveness of private sector. Also, it introduces ways to set up effective industrial policies. Chapter 5 analyze labor market and aims to make flexible and secure labor market. It suggests to establish the three party committee between labor, manager, and government. Also, it emphasizes the importance of re-training.Abbreviation Executive Summary Author : Doowon Lee CHAPTER ONE : Developmental Gap between Vietnam and Korea Author : Doowon Lee Ⅰ. Language, Immigration and Acculturation in the Short Stories of Ha Jin

The Problems of Acculturation: Flushing, Queens, in the Short Stories of Ha Jin Abstract: Noted author Ha Jin is often thought of as a Chinese author despite the fact that all of his writing has been written in English. Two of his later works, A Free Life (2007) and A Good Fall (2009) are set among the Chinese community in Flushing, Queens. This essay examines three short stories An English Professor, A Pension Plan, and Temporary Love from A Good Fall. In these works, Jin discusses the problems of acculturation these immigrants face, including learning English, finding employment, and dealing with forced separation. The stories depict the treacherous territory the immigrants, as well as the author himself at times, traverse as they dwell between two languages, two cultures, two literatures, two countries
