How a primary mathematics teacher in Shanghai improved her lessons on ‘angle measurement’
We report on one component of a study of school-based teacher professional development (TPD) in Shanghai, China. Here we focus on an experienced primary teacher who is teaching the topic of angle measurement to 10 year-olds. Using data from the teacher’s original lesson plans, her modified lesson plans, together with an expert teacher’s advice and the teacher’s reflections on her lesson design, we illustrate how the support of an expert teacher enabled the teacher to improve her instructional practice by supporting her in thinking explicitly about the traditional classroom practice with which she was familiar and in building her ‘wisdom of practice’ within the context of instructional reform taking place in Chin
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Veiksmažodis; Šaknis; Verb; Root of the wordSeveral verbs with -sk-, -šk- in the root are analysed in the article. Taking into account the fact that spirant + k/g in the final consonant cluster of the root in the Lithuanian language is treated depending on its position: before a vowel or a consonant, for example, megz-C : mezg-V, a similar metathesis should be expected in verbs with suffix -sėti after a velar consonant, i.e. *mirskėti instead of mirksėti, *džiuzgėtis instead of džiugsėtis. According to the author, its absence shows that the words are neologisms. The author uses the said metathesis in his attempts to explain two more examples, with -sk- in the root, i.e. viskėti, -a, -ėjo “move to all sides (usually by staying in one place)” and tuskėti, -a, -ėjo “beat; throb (referring to the heart); hammer” and reikšti, -ia “have a meaning, denote something; convey, reveal certain content; convey verbally; appear, emerge (referring to a certain phenomenon, quality)”
Essays on housing bubbles: testing, estimation, and fundamental analysis
Housing bubbles often cause serious problems to local economies and sometimes even cause global financial crisis. This dissertation addresses the following important questions about housing bubbles: What are the origins of housing bubbles? How do we estimate housing bubbles? What are the possible economic variables that relate to housing bubbles? I focus on the estimation of housing bubbles and the analysis of housing fundamentals and bubbles. The first essay studies housing bubbles in the U.S. during the subprime crisis. Using the Kalman filter, I find significant evidence of a housing bubble in the U.S. city-average level and in six metropolitan areas in the U.S., including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Boston, and Miami, between 2004 and 2007. Population and income are found to be the main factors that affect housing fundamentals. Expected capital gains are found to be significantly associated with housing bubbles. Furthermore, I find a high correlation between housing bubbles and housing vacancy rates. The second essay locates the time stamp of the origin and collapse of housing bubbles using augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) tests. An accumulated recursive regression and a rolling recursive regression are applied to test for U.S. housing bubble. Test results confirm explosive behavior in the housing price process, which serves as a necessary condition for the existence of housing bubbles, for the U.S. aggregate and some U.S. cities during the subprime crisis. I find significant evidence of explosiveness in the rent data for most of the cities in the sample, but not in the U.S. aggregate data. Furthermore, the results show a trend of the U.S. housing bubble moving from the east coast to the west coast.Ph. D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Keli Xia
Perceived parental conflict and adolescents' social adjustment: The chain mediating role of family rituals and parent-child attachment
Many previous studies have suggested that family factors are related to adolescents' social adjustment, but few studies have examined the relationship between parental conflict and adolescents' social adjustment and its mechanism. From the perspective of family system, this study will explore whether parental conflict influences adolescents' social adjustment through the mediating role of family rituals and parent-child attachment. Study 1 will examine the association between parental conflict and adolescents' social adjustment, as well as the mediating role of family rituals and parent-child attachment by using a cross-sectional multi-mediation model. Study 2 will take reform school students as the research participants and examine the relationship between the above variables again. This study explains the social adjustment problems of different adolescent groups from multiple variables and their relationships in the family system, and has reference value for promoting the prediction and intervention of adolescents' social adjustment
Approaching Good Luck Psychologically through Rituals in Uncertain Situations
Previous studies have revealed many functions of rituals, such as anti-anxiety, nervousness, and low sense of control. However, most of them research it from the perspective of counter-negativity, which we believe does not give us a comprehensive understanding of rituals. Besides getting rid of bad things, another important purpose of rituals is praying for positive things to happen. In this study, we want to investigate whether rituals can help with emotional benefits. We will demonstrate the effect of ritual on luck perception in uncertain situations through five experiments and provide an explanation of the psychological mechanism. Unlike previous studies, we want to explain that the action in ritual is not the primary reason for influencing luck perception. Under the attributes of the ritual, even pushing actions reduce the psychological distance from good luck. The results of this study will provide an explanation for many good luck rituals in life (whether cultural or non-cultural in nature), such as athletes' personal rituals and blessing rituals of different cultures. Although different rituals differ in performance, they can increase the user's sense of luck in uncertain situations, because the ritual action has pathways to enhance good luck
Quality Assurance: Procedures for Enhancing Project Sustainability
This presentation will provide an overview of quality assurance procedures employed by professionals at the Center for Education and Training for Employment (CETE) in the College of Education and Human Ecology. CETE's quality assurance procedures are based on the concept of "total quality management." Total quality management can be described as a management philosophy focused on the continual improvement of products, services or interventions based on customer satisfaction (Ahire, Landros & Gohar, 1995). The American Society for Quality (n.d.) identifies eight primary principles associated with total quality management. These principles include customer determination of quality; use of data in decision making; view of actors and processes as integrated systems; and reliance on strategic planning as a means for assessing systems and opportunities to improve interventions. Presenters will review principles and provide concrete examples of the use of quality assurance tools in several projects including application to the development of faculty grant proposals.AUTHOR AFFILIATION: Ryan Kapa, postdoctoral researcher, Center on Education and Training for Employment, College of Education and Human Ecology, [email protected] (Corresponding Author); David Julian, program director, Center on Education and Training for Employment, Ohio State College of Education and Human Ecology; Keli Bussell, graduate research associate, Center on Education and Training for Employment, Ohio State College of Education and Human Ecology; Alexis Little, doctoral student, Center on Education and Training for Employment, Ohio State College of Education and Human Ecology; Melissa Ross, program director, Center on Education and Training for Employment, Ohio State College of Education and Human EcologyQuality assurance provides a valuable model for evaluating the efficacy of and sustaining community partnerships and projects.
The author of the article analyses the problem of climate change by comparing the philosophical ideas of the leading figure of Chinese Daoism Laozi and the German philosopher Norbert Bolz. The article highlights the complexity, relevance and interdisciplinarity of the problem. It is assumed that the focus on the problem of climate change is closely linked to changes in the social structure of the Western society and the controversial technological progress that has already made it possible to capture the signs of global warming in nature. At the same time, the problem of climate change is seen as a conflict of different interpretations. For this reason, emphasis is placed on the need for a dialogue between specialists in natural and social sciences as well as humanities in addressing issues arising from the latter problem
