A geophysical approach to the igneous rocks in the Biga Peninsula (NW Turkey) based on airborne magnetic anomalies: geological implications
The Biga Peninsula, the complex geological structure of which has attracted intense attention so far, is located in the north-western part of Anatolia, Turkey. The Peninsula is tectonically very important region where different tectonic zones meet and comprises various kinds of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. Among these rocks, igneous rocks occupy a considerably amount of areas in the Biga Peninsula and they are mostly associated with geothermal systems and mineral deposits, and therefore they play an important role in the geology of the Peninsula. In this paper, derived results concerning the geological features and subsurface structures of the igneous rocks in the Peninsula are presented based on analyzing the airborne magnetic anomalies. To this end, a MATLAB-based toolkit named as Gravity and Magnetic Interpretation (GMINTERP) that is composed of a set of linked functions in conjunction with a graphical user interface was developed and used for the interpretation of the airborne magnetic anomalies. Some linear transformations and derivative-based techniques were performed to process the potential field data-set and also to help build a general understanding of the geological details. The close agreement between the derived geophysical anomaly maps and the well-known surface geology map of the Biga Peninsula helped us discuss the geological implications of the geophysical traces. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Beachrock formation on the coast of Gokceada Island and its relation to the active tectonics of the region, northern Aegean Sea, Turkey
There are beachrock formations in 5 different sections of the south coast of Gokceada, Turkey's largest Aegean island. These beachrocks form two different groups in terms of layering characteristics, delta O-18 and delta C-13 stable isotope compositions, consecutive cementation structures, and C-14 dating. The West Group beachrocks, to the west, were dated to 4010-5830 BP, while the East Group beachrocks were dated to 620-2390 BP. The beachrock formations in both groups are separated by the NE-SW-trending Ugurlu Fault. The Ugurlu Fault is a right lateral, strike slip with reverse component oblique fault, and is an active fault within the North Anatolian Fault Zone. In the period between the formation of the two beachrock groups (2390-4010 BP), an earthquake was responsible for the destruction of Gokceada Yenibademli mound and the development of two generations of beachrock. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Interpretation of gravity anomalies to delineate some structural features of Biga and Gelibolu peninsulas, and their surroundings (north-west Turkey)
On the basis of gravity data, derived anomaly traces were presented for the interpretation of some shallow structural features of Biga and Gelibolu peninsulas. Since building general understanding of subtle details about subsurface geology is of great importance considering that the study area is tectonically important, some advanced data processing techniques were implemented to gravity anomalies in a detailed manner. The procedures were performed using a MATLAB-based software package (Gravity and Magnetic Interpretation - GMINTERP). First, a finite element method was utilised to produce the residual data-set which is expected to reflect short wavelength anomalies arising from shallower geological structures, and thereafter some derivative-based algorithms were executed to analyse the residual data. The general anomaly patterns obtained from the applications clearly corresponded to the well-known surface geology map of the study area. Derivative-based anomaly maps put forward some findings about the existence of an old caldera structure in the western part of the Biga Peninsula. Additionally, abrupt lateral changes in anomaly amplitudes indicated the presence of some major structural discontinuities. Thus, findings yielded to make significant geological interpretations that might be important for further investigations. This study also showed that GMINTERP software package proved useful in assisting geological interpretation using geophysical potential field data-sets
Pharyngeal teeth, lateral ethmoids, and jaw teeth of fishes and additional fossils from the late Miocene (late Khersonian/early Maeotian) of eastern paratethys (Yalova, near Istanbul, Turkey)
A late Khersonian to early Maeotian fossil assemblage from the Upper Miocene to Lower Pliocene Yalakdere Formation near Yalova city ( northwestern Anatolia, Turkey) is documented. The following fish taxa, represented by pharyngeal teeth, lateral ethmoids and jaw teeth are described: Cyprinidae with Carassius sp., Tinca sp., Scardinius sp., Leuciscus sp., Barbus sp., Cobitidae with Cobitis sp., Siluridae with Silurus sp., and Esocidae with Esox sp.. Further described vertebrates are reptiles ( Trionyx sp.) and small mammals ( cf. Eliomys intermedius FRIANT). Additional invertebrate fauna and flora, comprising diverse gastropods, ostracods, charophytes, pollen and limnic green algae, are listed. The fossil assemblage from the Yalakdere Formation indicates fresh to slightly brackish water environments
