Programmatic and performance observations for Two Chamber Works by Chen Yi
Full text linkAs a Chinese-American composer who was born and reared in China, then studied and settled in the United States, Chen Yi’s success is widely recognized around the world. However, this success is not coincidental and is closely related to her fusion of the Chinese and Western cultures in her works. At the time of this writing, Chen Yi has composed more than forty chamber works, from which the author researched two with the same instrumentation—flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. By understanding Chen Yi’s life experiences and analyzing the theoretical aspects of these compositions, the author gives suggestions for ensemble, timbre, rhythm, pedaling, and performance techniques in these two chamber works by Chen Yi—Happy Rain on a Spring Night and … as like a raging fire

The repertoire of this recital includes four famous clarinet compositions from the Romantic period, and the twentieth century. This document will be divided into five chapters to discuss the life of the composers, the background of the compositions, the analysis and interpretation of these masterpieces.
The content of this document will be divided into four chapters. The first chapter includes clarinet Concerto No. 1, Op. 26, composed by Louis Spohr. The second chapter is Sonata for clarinet and piano, composed by Francis Poulenc. The third chapter discusses Robert Schumann\ue2s Fantasy Pieces for clarinet and piano, Op. 73. The fourth chapter refers to Sonatina for clarinet and piano by Malcolm Arnold

Chinese-American women composers: an overview of Chinese aesthetics in selected piano works of Chen Yi and Bun-Ching Lam
No full textThe purpose of this dissertation lecture recital project was to discuss and perform Chinese aesthetics in selected piano works of two Chinese-American female composers, Chen Yi and Bun-Ching Lam. Chen and Lam were raised in China, exposed to music at an early age, and received further music education in the United States. Additionally, through their many accomplishments, they have successfully promoted women artists and composers. For Chen, the pieces I selected were: Variations on Awariguli (1978), Duo Ye (1985), and Northern Scenes (2013), focusing on the aesthetics of: Yin-Yang, and Beijing opera. For Lam, the pieces I selected were: Six Phenomena (1998) and Three Little Pieces (2018), highlighting the aesthetics of: Chinese brushwork and Negative space. This project may provide a user-friendly resource for performers, teachers, and students who wish to program the music of Chen Yi and Bun-Ching Lam. The study of Chinese-American women composers and their music should be more widely included in music studies and performance programming.D. A

No full textThe purpose of this study is to draw attention to the hybrid of Eastern and Western musical elements, in Chen Yi’s orchestral work Si Ji. In this dissertation, Chen Yi’s Si Ji will be thoroughly discussed by a detailed analysis of the work as well as the background of Chen Yi’s musical world, and the poetry she is inspired by. It will show how the music produces a hybrid of East and West.
