Beware of the yeti, and spurious science too

[Extract] The field of cryptobiology has produced some real laughs over the years – the Jersey devil and mothman are among my favourites – but occasionally it yields some bona fide discoveries, such as the okapi and coelacanth. So what are we to make of the startling news that the legendary yeti has been "discovered"? The yeti is supposedly a giant ape-like creature that lives in the Himalayas. Those who claim to have seen it describe it as dark, shaggy, bipedal and extremely shy. Scores of trekkers and mountain climbers, including Everest conqueror Edmund Hilary, claim to have found footprints that are similar to a human's but much bigger and broader

Abstract. The paper presents the ideas of the international initiative YETI (Young Exoplanet Transit Initiative) for searching for young exoplanets in open clusters, information about the organization of the observational campaigns as well as the preliminary results from the observations of the first cluster Tr 37. It is noted the successful participation of the Bulgarian team in the observational campaigns of Tr 37 (27 observational nights with above 12000 images). Due to the interesting light curves of Tr 37-3132 obtained by the Rozhen telescopes this object was chosen for follow-up spectral observations with large telescopes in the framework of YETI

    Yeti on the cloud

(YETI) is an automated random testing tool that allows to test programs written in various programming languages. While YETI is one of the fastest random testing tools with over a million method calls per minute on fast code, testing large programs or slow code – such as libraries using intensively the memory – might benefit from parallel executions of testing sessions. This paper presents the cloud-enabled version of YETI. It relies on the Hadoop package and its map/reduce implementation to distribute tasks over potentially many com-puters. This would allow to distribute the cloud version of YETI over Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). Keywords-Software Testing; Distributed System

The Young Exoplanet Transit Initiative (YETI)

We present the Young Exoplanet Transit Initiative (YETI), in which we use several 0.2 to 2.6-m telescopes around the world to monitor continuously young (\u3c= 100 Myr), nearby (\u3c= 1 kpc) stellar clusters mainly to detect young transiting planets (and to study other variability phenomena on time-scales from minutes to years). The telescope network enables us to observe the targets continuously for several days in order not to miss any transit. The runs are typically one to two weeks long, about three runs per year per cluster in two or three subsequent years for about ten clusters. There are thousands of stars detectable in each field with several hundred known cluster members, e. g. in the first cluster observed, Tr-37, a typical cluster for the YETI survey, there are at least 469 known young stars detected in YETI data down to R = 16.5 mag with sufficient precision of 50 millimag rms (5 mmag rms down to R = 14.5 mag) to detect transits, so that we can expect at least about one young transiting object in this cluster. If we observe similar to 10 similar clusters, we can expect to detect similar to 10 young transiting planets with radius determinations. The precision given above is for a typical telescope of the YETI network, namely the 60/90-cm Jena telescope (similar brightness limit, namely within +/-1 mag, for the others) so that planetary transits can be detected. For targets with a periodic transit-like light curve, we obtain spectroscopy to ensure that the star is young and that the transiting object can be sub-stellar; then, we obtain Adaptive Optics infrared images and spectra, to exclude other bright eclipsing stars in the (larger) optical PSF; we carry out other observations as needed to rule out other false positive scenarios; finally, we also perform spectroscopy to determine the mass of the transiting companion. For planets with mass and radius determinations, we can calculate the mean density and probe the internal structure. We aim to constrain planet formation models and their time-scales by discovering planets younger than similar to 100 Myr and determining not only their orbital parameters, but also measuring their true masses and radii, which is possible so far only by the transit method. Here, we present an overview and first results. (C) 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinhei

    The Friendly Yeti

Most images of yetis in Western popular culture and scholarly literature portray them as secular, predatory monsters. These representations overlook important religious dimensions of yetis that are hidden in the current literature, so I take a new look at yetis in Tibetan religions in order to clarify our understanding of these legendary creatures. Following a phenomenological approach that sets aside the issue of the ontological existence of yetis, I examine texts, art, ritual, and folklore in order to propose four yeti personal ideal types: the Buddhist practitioner, the human religious ally, the friendly yeti, and the mountain deity yeti. These ideal types enhance earlier scholarship by demonstrating that yetis may appear in friendly as well as dangerous guises, may play religious roles even when they are not venerated, and may embody numinosity even when they are most fearsome

A Checklist of Hypotheses for the Yeti

This paper provides a checklist of 35 hypotheses concerning the identity of the yeti – a hairy creature in Sherpa folklore, Tibetan literature, and cryptozoology. Most scientists dismiss the idea the yeti is an unidentified animal and instead suggest known animal misidentifications such as bears (e.g., Ursus thibetanus thibetanus) to explain yeti stories by the Sherpa as well as reported sightings of the creature at high altitudes in the Eastern Himalayas. Reports of yeti tracks in the snow (typically above 15,000 ft.) have been explained by many different animals
