Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Déterminants et impacts des stratégies des agriculteurs français contre les risques climatiques
No full textThis thesis examines the links between agriculture and climate change through the lens of adaptation and protection behaviours. Each chapter illustrates an example of this type of link among French farmers, combining microeconometric and theoretical analysis. The first chapter explores the impacts and determinants of crop insurance in France. It shows that farmers who purchase insurance tend to increase their income as a result of changes in their production behaviour: protected from risk, they can afford to adopt practices that are both riskier and more profitable. The second major finding of this chapter is that the farmers who insure the most tend to benefit the least from insurance, highlighting a form of adverse selection due to informational and non-monetary barriers.The second chapter adopts the perspective of insurance companies and examines pricing discrimination in crop insurance against organic farmers. Using the concept of actuarial fairness, it finds that organic farmers tend to pay too much for their insurance relative to their actual risk. This makes the tool less attractive for farmers who consider converting to organic, and could potentially slow down the transition.Finally, the third chapter focuses on the effects of France’s main pesticide reduction policy: the DEPHY programme. This is an informational policy based on the establishment of subsidised model farms, designed to promote agroecological practices by example. The chapter evaluates both the effectiveness of the programme itself and the economic mechanisms of social learning, using the policy as a treatment. On the first point, the effects are moderate: a significant reduction, but well below the targets set by the government. On the second, social learning mechanisms appear limited in the context of this policy: farmers mostly learn directly from DEPHY farms, but do not seem to pass the information on to their peers.Cette thèse examine les liens entre agriculture et changement climatique à travers le prisme des comportements d'adaptation et de protection. Chaque chapitre illustre un exemple de ce type de lien chez des agriculteurs français, en combinant une analyse microéconométrique et théorique. Le premier chapitre explore les impacts et déterminants de l'assurance récolte en France. Il montre que les agriculteurs qui s’assurent ont tendance à augmenter leurs revenus en raison de changements dans leurs comportements de production : protégés contre les risques, ils peuvent en effet se permettre d’adopter des pratiques à la fois plus risquées et plus lucratives. La deuxième conclusion majeure de ce chapitre est que les agriculteurs qui s’assurent le plus ont tendance à bénéficier le moins de l’assurance, ce qui met en évidence une forme de sélection négative (et non sélection adverse) liée à des barrières informationnelles et non monétaires. Le deuxième chapitre adopte le point de vue des compagnies d’assurance et s’interroge sur les discriminations tarifaires de l’assurance récolte à l’encontre des agriculteurs biologiques. À travers le concept de justice actuarielle, il montre que les agriculteurs bio ont tendance à payer leur assurance plus cher que ne le justifie leur niveau de risque. Cela rend l’outil moins attractif pour ceux qui souhaitent se convertir au bio, et pourrait potentiellement freiner la transition. Enfin, le troisième chapitre s’intéresse aux effets de la principale politique de réduction des pesticides en France : le programme DEPHY. Il s’agit d’une politique informationnelle reposant sur la mise en place de fermes modèles subventionnées, censées promouvoir les pratiques agroécologiques par l’exemple. Le chapitre évalue à la fois l’efficacité propre du programme et les mécanismes économiques d’apprentissage social, en utilisant la politique comme un traitement. Sur le premier point, les effets sont modérés : une réduction significative, mais largement inférieure aux objectifs fixés par le gouvernement.
