Retrospective Evaluation of the Factors Affecting Etiology and Prognosis of Adult Acute Kidney Injury
Aim:Acute kidney injury (AKI) is still an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Several factors are effective in its frequency, etiology, prognosis and mortality. In our study, we aimed to demonstrate the etiology and prognostic factors of AKI.Methods:A total of 272 patients diagnosed with AKI, who were hospitalized in the nephrology department between January 2011 and December 2015, were included in the study. In addition to the demographic characteristics of patients, clinical and laboratory findings were evaluated retrospectively.Results:Forty-seven point four percent of patients were female and 52.6% were male. The mean age of the patients was 61.6 years, the mean length of hospital stay was 13.3 days, the number of hemodialysis sessions was 1.24 and the mortality rate was 4.8%. The need and number of hemodialysis sessions were significantly higher in older patients (>65 years). The need and number of hemodialysis sessions were higher in the renal AKI group (48.7%, 1.9). The length of hospital-stay was longer and mortality rate was higher in patients with renal AKI compared to the other groups (16.4 days, 8.8%). Mortality rate, length of hospital-stay, and number of hemodialysis sessions were found to be increased significantly in patients with infection (42%).Conclusion:Etiology and accompanying infection in AKI are the most important factors affecting mortality. In addition, anemia and advanced age increase the length of hospital stay and the need for hemodialysis
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. What is the optimal dwell time for maximizing ultrafiltration with icodextrin exchange in automated peritoneal dialysis patients?
Background: Icodextrin is increasingly being used in automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) for the tong dwell exchange to maintain adequate ultrafiltration (UF). However, the UF reported in the literature varies with different dwelt times: from 200 to 500 mL with 12 - 15 hour dwells. In order to maximize UF, it is important to know the relationship between dwell time and UF when using icodextrin in APD patients. With this knowledge, decisions can be made with respect to dwelt period, and adjustments to the dialysis prescription can be made accordingly. Methods: We prospectively studied this relationship in 36 patients from Canada and Turkey. All patients did the icodextrin day exchange manually after disconnecting themselves from overnight cycler dialysis. Dwell period was increased by 1 hour every week, from 10 to 14 hours. Ultrafiltration was noted for each icodextrin exchange. Mean UF for each week (i.e., dwell period) was compared by repeated measures ANOVA. Results: We found no difference in mean UF with increasing dwelt time: 351.73 +/- 250.59 mL at 10 hours versus 371.75 +/- 258.25 mL at 14 hours (p = 0.83). We also compared mean UF between different subgroups and found that mates (p = 0.02 vs females) and high transporters (p = 0.04 vs low) had higher mean UF. Further analysis of maximal UF showed no correlation to age, sex, diabetic status, transport category, creatinine clearance, Kt/V, duration on peritoneal dialysis, or duration of icodextrin use. Conclusion: Icodextrin-related UF in APD patients is not related to demographic factors and does not increase significantly beyond 10 hours
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Treatment modalities and outcome of the renal victims of the Marmara earthquake
Background/Aims: Treatment of renal problems during natural catastrophes is highly complicated both for medical and logistic reasons. The therapeutic interventions applied to and the outcome of 639 victims with acute renal problems during the catastrophic Marmara earthquake have been the subject of this study. Methods: Questionnaires regarding information about 63 clinical and laboratory variables were sent to 35 reference hospitals that treated the victims. Information considering therapeutic interventions and outcome obtained through these questionnaires was submitted to analysis. Results: At least one form of renal replacement therapy was administered to 477 (74.6%) of the 639 victims. Of these, 437, 11, and 4 were treated solely by intermittent hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, and peritoneal dialysis, respectively; 25 victims needed more than one dialysis modality. In total, 5,137 hemodialysis sessions were performed. Also, 2,981, 2,837 and 2,594 units of blood, fresh frozen plasma, and human albumin were administered, respectively. Transfusion of these products was usually associated with higher rates of dialysis needs and mortality. Ninety-seven patients (15.2%) died. The mortality rate of dialyzed victims was higher as compared to nondialyzed ones (17.2 vs. 9.3%, p = 0.015). Conclusions: Massive amounts of dialysis treatment as well as blood and blood product transfusions can be necessary in the treatment of catastrophic earthquake victims with nephrological problems. Despite the potential risk of a high mortality, in the case of appropriate and energetic medical interventions, reasonable final outcomes can be achieved. Copyright (C) 2002 S. Karger AG, Basel

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
