    This 199-page handbook is a monograph on Notre-Dame de Vaulx, a French village located in the Isère département of the Rhône-Alpes region, authored by J.D. CHAUPIN. It was completed in May 1958 and dedicated by the author to his grand-daughter Danielle Marthe CHAUPIN.     Identification of moving loads on bridges is an important inverse problem in the civil and structural engineering field, which can provide a better understanding about the dynamic loadings on bridges. The study on identification of moving loads has made a big progress over the past years. This paper first gives a review on various methods for moving force identification. It then goes on to discuss its recent advances by describing how these methods could be improved by using some mathematical tools. A field study adopting the improved system is then described and some observations of the field study are summarized at the end

    J.D. Manning: The Life of a WWII Draftee

    abstract: The biography of J.D. Manning tells the story of the first man drafted in the United States at the dawn of World War II. Growing up, he lived an ordinary, small-town life in Washburn, Wisconsin. However, due to a clerical error, by the time he was inducted into the military, J.D. had assumed a second identity. While listed under a different name throughout his military service, J.D. decided to turn the military into a career. He extended his service and went on to Officer Candidate School before serving in the war. Ultimately, J.D. died in the Battle of Cherbourg. His story outlines the importance of humanizing war at a time when statistics and numbers tend to impersonalize such a large, historical event. J.D.'s biography provides an understanding of how even the most ordinary, typical life of a drafted solider during WWII can produce an extraordinary story. J.D. was not special. He was but one death in a body count of over 400,000 American soldiers during the war. Yet, his story teaches us that one does not have to be special to be important. Every American soldier has made a contribution to our country, yet only a select few have ever had their stories told. This biography of J.D. will add one more story to the limited collection existing today

    Anticipatory Smart Sensing System Interface by CICT

    Current human made application and system can be quite fragile to unexpected perturbation because Statistics can fool you, unfortunately. We need resilient and antifragile application to be ready for next generation systems. Cybernetics (i.e. control theory) and complexity theory tell us that it is actually feasible to create resilient social and economic order by means of self-organization, self-regulation, and self-governance. From this point of view, current most advanced “embedded intelligent system” is a “deficient system”, a fragile system, because its algorithms are based on statistical intelligence or knowledge only, and are lacking a fundamental system component. In fact, decision theory, based on a "fixed universe" or a model of possible outcomes, ignores and minimizes the effect of events that are "outside model". Deep epistemic limitations reside in some parts of the areas covered in decision making. Unfortunately, the "probabilistic veil" can be very opaque computationally, and misplaced precision leads to confusion. To grasp a more reliable representation of reality and to get stronger physical and biological system algorithm, researchers and scientists need two intelligently articulated hands: both stochastic and combinatorial approach synergistically articulated by natural coupling. In a continuously changing operational environment, even if operational parameters cannot be closely predefined at system design level, we need to be able to design antifragile self-organizing, self-regulating and self-adapting system quite easily anyway. We need anticipatory smart sensing system interfaces. To behave realistically, system interface must guarantee both Logical Aperture (to survive and grow) and Logical Closure (to learn and prosper), both fed by environmental "noise" (better... from what human beings call "noise"). Rational recursive sequence represents a convenient mathematical method that holds anticipatory proprieties, because it is possible to implement anticipatory computational strategies of any recursive sequence’s term quite easily. We present adaptive and learning system reference architecture for anticipatory smart sensing system interface (Interaction Interface System, IIS) capable to interact in real-time by design and to learn from its mistakes. IIS can be used even for advanced ISS (Inner Safety System) in advanced biomedical and advanced healthcare system development. To design, analyze and test IIS and ISS system properties, a simulation environment has been designed, developed and implemented, programmed in MATLAB language, called VEDA® (Visualization of Evolutionary Dynamics Application), at Politecnico di Milano. VEDA® system dynamics simulation toolbox offers a high level simulation flexibility by user-optimized graphic interface to get easier simulation task, to design, analyze and synthesize complex dynamical system behavior. In this way, it is possible to study natural complex dynamic’s simulation, to verify and validate through numerical computation and displaying the behavior of all subsystems that compose the final combined overall system performance. The present paper is a relevant contribute towards a new General Theory of Systems to show how homeostatic operating equilibria can emerge out of a self-organizing landscape of self-structuring attractor points

    Stronger Quantum Decoherence Incomputability Modeling by CICT

    Decoherence is a sort of leaking away of quantum behavior when a particle interacts with its surroundings. Decoherence offers a way to understand classicality as emergent from within the quantum formalism, and the classical world no longer sits in opposition to quantum mechanics, but is demanded by it. The decoherence description shows that there is no abrupt boundary, no critical size, at which quantum behavior switches to classical. And the blurry boundary itself shifts depending on how it is measured. It is the choice of the measuring apparatus that defines whether a specific object can be represented by a quantum or classical model. Nowadays unfortunately, even the most sophisticated instrumentation system is completely unable to reliably discriminate so called "random noise" (RN) from any combinatorically optimized encoded message, called Deterministic Noise (DN). Mankind’s best conceivable worldview is at most a partial picture of the real world, a picture, a representation centered on man. Clearly, the observer, having incomplete information about the real underlying generating process, and no reliable theory about what the data correspond to, will always make mistakes, but these mistakes have a certain pattern. Unfortunately, the "probabilistic veil" can be very opaque computationally, and misplaced precision leads to confusion. To grasp a more reliable representation of reality and to get stronger physical and biological system correlates, researchers and scientists need two intelligently articulated hands: both stochastic and combinatoric approach synergistically articulated by natural coupling. The first attempt to identify basic principles to get stronger physical and biological measurement and correlates from experiment has been developing at Politecnico di Milano since the end of last century. In 2013, the basic principles on computational information conservation theory (CICT), from discrete system parameter and generator, appeared in literature. In this paper, our goal is to show that CICT can offer stronger quantum decoherence incomputability modeling relations than by modern statistical approach only. An example is presented. Specifically, advanced mathematical modeling, advanced wellbeing applications (AWA), high reliability organization (HRO), mission critical project (MCP) system, very low technological risk (VLTR) and crisis management (CM) system will be highly benefited mostly

    Depolarization and decreased surface expression of K+ channels contribute to NSAID-inhibition of intestinal restitution

    Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) contribute to gastrointestinal ulcer formation by inhibiting epithelial cell migration and mucosal restitution; however, the drug-affected signaling pathways are poorly defined. We investigated whether NSAID inhibition of intestinal epithelial migration is associated with depletion of intracellular polyamines, depolarization of membrane potential (Em) and altered surface expression of K+ channels. Epithelial cell migration in response to the wounding of confluent IEC-6 and IEC-Cdx2 monolayers was reduced by indomethacin (100μM), phenylbutazone (100μM) and NS-398 (100μM) but not by SC-560 (1μM). NSAID-inhibition of intestinal cell migration was not associated with depletion of intracellular polyamines. Treatment of IEC-6 and IEC-Cdx2 cells with indomethacin, phenylbutazone and NS-398 induced significant depolarization of Em, whereas treatment with SC-560 had no effect on Em. The Em of IEC-Cdx2 cells was: −38.5±1.8mV under control conditions; −35.9±1.6mV after treatment with SC-560; −18.8±1.2mV after treatment with indomethacin; and −23.7±1.4mV after treatment with NS-398. Whereas SC-560 had no significant effects on the total cellular expression of Kv1.4 channel protein, indomethacin and NS-398 decreased not only the total cellular expression of Kv1.4, but also the cell surface expression of both Kv1.4 and Kv1.6 channel subunits in IEC-Cdx2. Both Kv1.4 and Kv1.6 channel proteins were immunoprecipitated by Kv1.4 antibody from IEC-Cdx2 lysates, indicating that these subunits co-assemble to form heteromeric Kv channels. These results suggest that NSAID inhibition of epithelial cell migration is independent of polyamine-depletion, and is associated with depolarization of Em and decreased surface expression of heteromeric Kv1 channels.ID: S0006295207001931; M3: Article; Accession Number: S0006295207001931; Author: L.C.     (Résumé de l'ouvrage) Seventeen innovative studies are collected in this volume which has been produced under the aegis of the Centre for Biblical Studies, University of Manchester, and L'Institut des sciences bibliques, Université de Lausanne. The majority of the studies engage with narrative through providing insightful working examples. Building on the many contributions of recent narratological research, for the most part the studies in this collection avoid the technical language of narratology as they present fresh insights at many levels. Some essays focus more on the implied author, some on the implied reader or hearer, and some on the way particular messages are constructed; some of the studies consider how author, message and reader are all interconnected. There are several creative proposals for refining genre definition, from law and wisdom to gospel and apocryphal writings. Some studies highlight the way in which narratives can contain ethical, religious, and cultural messages. Sensitivity to narrative is also shown by some contributors to expose in intruing ways the redactional processes behind the final form of texts. Students of narrative in the ancient world will find much to consider in this book, and others engaged with literary studies more generally will discover that scholars of the worlds of the Bible and Late Antiquity have much to offer them
