Fischer acknowledges the emergence of a technoculture that favours the abandonment of logocentrism and the phonetic alphabet so that a multisensorial and multimedia language-object may come into existence. The author examines the manifestations of this in the work of nearly 20 artists
The history of the Library of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (SBRAS) 1877-1923
Traces the history of Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society Library which was founded along with the society in 1877. The Library contained a wealth of knowledge pertaining to Malaysia and its surrounding regions, consisting of Malay manuscripts, books, maps, pamphlets, photographs and journals. However, the Library met its tragic end in 1923 whereby its entire collection was transferred on permanent loan to the Raffles Library, Singapor

Ventilator control with ieRSPOP++ and ieRSPOP (FRI/E) using interpolative and extrapolative reasoning
Artificial Intelligent is the rising technique that have been widely used in expert task domain, like trading analysis/decision and medical sector. Many different learning algorithm have emerged over past few decades. Fuzzy logic is known for its high interpretability. Therefore, Fuzzy logic & Neural Network are combined to have an understandable reasoning and conclusion.
Pseudo outer-Product Fuzzy Neural Network (POPFNN) with Rough Set attribute reduction (RSPOP) have shown to have achieved high interpretability with moderately high accuracy. The improved online learning ieRSPOP (incremental ensemble learning RSPOP) handle well time series data and the result are promising. ieRSPOP is further improved into two ways, ieRSPOP++ and ieRSPOP with interpolation and extrapolation (ieRSPOP FRI/E). The former method is to improve accuracy and interpretability with anti-hebbian learning and Ebbinghaus theory for dynamic updating of ensemble weights. The latter is used interpolation and extrapolation method to handle sparse rule based condition.
ieRSPOP FRI/E have shown that its achievement over time series data like Mackey Glass time series and stock market prediction to other methods. However, the application of it to medical sector is still lacking.
In this paper, author investigated these two architectural functionalities, providing the actual implemental architectural flow of ieRSPOP FRI/E, it will server a better understanding for the existing ieRSPOP family structure and deep insight of the method explained. The ieRSPOP FRI/E experiment on artificial ventilation modelling is done and strength and weakness of existing system is identified.
Recent researches have shown that people are interested in handling sparse data because these data can make an impactful decision for financial and medical expert task. Therefore, how these two architectural can be further improvement when dealing with sparse data is discussed for future development as well.Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Science
The FLX gene of Arabidopsis is required for FRI-dependent activation of FLC expression
The Arabidopsis FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) gene encodes a MADS box protein that acts as a dose-dependent repressor of flowering. Mutants and ecotypes with elevated expression of FLC are late flowering and vernalization responsive. In this study we describe an early flowering mutant in the C24 ecotype, flc expressor (flx), that has reduced expression of FLC. FLX encodes a protein of unknown function with putative leucine zipper domains. FLX is required for FRIGIDA (FRI)-mediated activation of FLC but not for activation of FLC in autonomous pathway mutants. FLX is also required for expression of the FLC paralogs MADS AFFECTING FLOWERING 1 (MAF1) and MAF2. © The Author 2007. Improving repairability in cordless vacuum cleaners
The incentive of this graduation project was to determine the repairability of Philips cordless vacuum cleaners and propose strategies to improve their repairability. This was done using two assessment methods; the Disassembly map and the French Repairability Index (FRI). The French Repairability Index is the first mandatory repair label. The final outcomes of this project are an assessment of two Philips cordless vacuum cleaners, a tool which provides guidance during FRI assessment (The adapted Disassembly Map) and design guidelines on how to design for FRI.Design for Interactio
Media-Based Monitoring and Evaluation for Grassroots Organizations
Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) is an important element of any development initiative as it helps to inform project and community stakeholders, as well as donors, as to the effectiveness and impact of a given intervention or program. However, conventional M&E can present various challenges, particularly for grassroots community organizations for whom M&E can be inaccessible, unaffordable and time consuming. This research proposes a system of M&E for grassroots community organizations that is based on use of appropriate media tools and technology for conducting participatory M&E data collection. The scope of this research will present a review of current knowledge and practice of participatory M&E and applications using media. The researcher has designed a media-based M&E system and performed small-scale field tests for viability with three African community-based organizations. A training module was created to introduce the concept of media-based M&E and hands-on training sessions were conducted using video and photography tools.
While this research was conducted with the specific needs of NextAid (a small US-based NGO) and their African partner organizations in mind, the author has developed the media-based M&E model with the intent of being able to adapt and replicate the system for other NGOs and projects being monitored worldwide. It is suggested that Media-based M&E would have viable applications in the areas of humanitarian emergencies, conflict zones, and small-scale projects where groups have a need to communicate with overseas or long distance partners or funders.
The author concludes that media-based M&E can enhance, rather than replace some existing and commonly accepted practices in the field of M&E. It should therefore be considered as an approach to complement existing practices where appropriate. In the viability field tests, it was shown that Media-based M&E has the potential to be effective and appropriate. One of the most notable strengths of the approach is its emphasis on enabling participatory M&E and building capacity and accessibility for grassroots community organizations. The author also points out the potential weaknesses of the approach in order to provide practitioners with information that will help guide the decision of whether or not media-based M&E is appropriate for a given project or initiative

The application of hybrid Computational Fluid Dynamics to optimize the air curtain of a refrigerated display cabinet
Conventionally, the geometry of the Fri-Jado open vertical refrigerated display cabinet design is optimized by drawing and producing the new components and testing the new configuration in a climate chamber, which is known to be an iterative process that consumes a large amount of time. To speed up the optimization process, the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was proposed. For this thesis, a case study was performed on a specific Fri-Jado cabinet that required many iterations for optimizing the geometry, using the commercial Simscale CFD package. In addition, experimental tests were performed on the Fri-Jado cabinet to compare with the simulation results.During the experimental testing and literature review, it was found that the entrainment of ambient air was the main component of the heat load for the cabinet. By designing and validating a simplified 2D k-ω SST simulation of the air curtain and external environment, an optimization study was performed. In this optimization study, it was found that for an offset angle of 10° and throw angle of 25° in combination with a stepped velocity profile, minimal thermal and mass entrainment ratios were reached.Mechanical Engineerin
