In this paper we will develop a spreadsheet-based Decision Support System (DSS) to determine the number of rattan depot and supply allocation to meet the production centers demand with case study in Solo Raya. The DSS incorporates database, model base, analysis tool, and Graphical User Interface (GUI) and user. Databases for storing data, the model base to keep models, analysis tool is required for solving the model and GUI allows users to interact with the database, model base and analysis tool. Data base, the base model and analysis tool are developed using the spreadsheet. The basic idea of the proposed approach is the spreadsheets can be used to build data-driven, model-driven DSS and solver-driven DSS. The model was developed by consider two stages of distribution network, multi commodities of raw rattan, and multi-periods of production plan. The DSS development approaches used in order to government can efficiently make the policy. DSS software interface is designed so user-friendly with point and click application so that users can operate quickly and easily. Users do not need to formulate a mathematical model despite they want to change index values or parameters repeatedly. The test results of case examples provided also give good results, where the software is capable for processing data based on selected model. The DSS is capable for providing location results and the allocation of raw or processed rattan at the depot on minimal total supply chain cost. The result may be a consideration for the policy makers to determine the right location of rattan depot. Keywords: decision support system, spreadsheet, location-allocation model, rattan industr

This paper is a study of a facility location-allocation problem in the rattan furniture industry. There are six production centers (PCs) of rattan furniture in Surakarta and its surroundings. However, their export sales are decline due to some possible problems in raw rattan distribution network from the sources centers (SCs), e.g. Borneo and Celebes Island to production centers. In the previous research, the model was expanded to support local government decide to determine optimal number of depot by consider static demand. This policy is aimed to cut the distribution channel and reduce total supply chain costs. Due to changing of global market, the demand is fluctuate. The previous model cannot anticipate this situation; consequently the local government needs a facility location-allocation model by considering dynamic demand. The objective of this research is to develop a model for supporting the local government to decide optimal number of depot by considers dynamic demand. A mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) was proposed to minimize total supply chain costs. The proposed model assumed that the demand for multiple products is known in advance. The potential raw rattan depot and source locations as well as their maximum capacities are also known. Finally, the proposed model can be used as instrument decision making to determine facility location-allocation. Keywords: dynamic demand, a facility location-allocation model, rattan industry competitiveness, total supply chain costs

HENRY JAMES’ VIEW ABOUT AMERICAN CULTURE AS REPRESENTED BY DAISY MILLER IN DAISY MILLER (GENETIC STRUCTURALISM APPROACH)

ABSTRACT Daisy Miller is one of James’ novels that talks about cultural gap. There are many cultural conflicts between American and European. The researcher had formulated three problem statements as follows: (1) How are the cultural differences in Daisy Miller? (2) How does the society in Daisy Miller view Daisy Miller? (3) How does Henry James view American culture as represented by Daisy Miller in Daisy Miller? In order to answer the questions, the researcher used genetic structuralism approach by Lucien Goldman to analyze Daisy Miller, because genetic structuralism is used to find the world view of the author toward his novel. There are three aspects to be correlated in genetic structuralism, i.e. the novel itself, biography of the author, the social condition when the novel was created. The researcher also had to find the previous novel and novel after Daisy Miller which have the same theme and correlated them with Daisy Miller. By the combination of the aspects above, the researcher could find Henry James’ view about American culture as represented by Daisy Miller in Daisy Miller. There were three findings in this research: First, the researcher found that there are cultural differences between America and Europe. In Daisy Miller Henry James presents the Americans who had settled in Europe lived in a luxurious life. It can be seen from their life style. They stayed from one hotel to another and they liked to hold parties. The Millers family brought a private tutor to teach Randolph, Daisy’s brother. It was very expensive to bring a private tutor from America to Europe; but James presents the society to show that it was a rich and high-class society. Daisy Miller was a visitor in Europe. She brought the pure American culture. The conflict appeared when she was considered to break the rules in Europe such as walking in the night with a man. Second, the researcher identified the view of society to Daisy Miller. The characters in Daisy Miller were: (1) Frederick Winterbourne. He was a young American who had lived and schooled in Geneva. He sometimes judged Daisy as a good girl, but in other time he considered her as a bad girl. (2) Mrs. Costello. She is American but with European air. She looked down the Millers family because of their new money, unsophisticated conduct, and intimacy with their courier. (3) Mrs. Walker. She exemplified the values of the formal American but with European air similar to Mrs. Costello. (4) He was an Italian man. He considered Daisy just as natural and innocent girl. (5) Mrs. Miller. She was Daisy’s mother. She was the opposite of a higher class European mother, because she allowed her daughter to do as she liked. Third, the researcher found that Henry James presents Daisy Miller as the representation of American culture. Daisy’s characteristics are: (1) Freedom. (2) Naturalness. (3) Innocence. (4) Purity. Henry James takes the American culture a little higher than European culture. He also considers that two different cultures can live together in one community comfortably as long as the member of society respects each other

ABSTRACT This thesis is in the framework of American study approach, which attempts to analyze the problems through interdisciplinary study. The researcher takes the issue of the early feminists’ movement in rising the conscience of women’s rights in America as the subject matter to discuss Henry James’ The Bostonians (TB). This present study focuses on how the struggle of early feminists against sexual discrimination engenders women’s rights movement in the 19th century America. In accordance to the problem above, the objectives of this study are to find out the causes why women are excluded from the public domain and rights in patriarchal system of American society and how some feminists’ efforts to struggle for women’s public rights in equal basis with men. This study is library research. To achieve those objectives, this thesis employs some approaches as a representation of interdisciplinary study. The researcher attempts to reveal the American experience in this novel by applying literary, historical, and sociological approaches. The use of these approaches is meant to affiliate theories and knowledge from various disciplines in analyzing a work of literature. In other words, those approaches require collaboration among the disciplines to get a deep interpretation of the work. The literary approaches used in this study is feminist literary criticism to know how far the ideology sexes is provided by the author in controlling the text and to have interpretation to the text based on the woman reader’s point of view. The sociological and historical approaches are used to know the background of the social values and the crucial moments in the time. These approaches are applied in order to get most appropriate analysis and it will find supporting evidence dealing with the problem of the thesis. As the result of this research, the researcher finds out that due to the conservative and conventional values of patriarchal society, women had suffered from subordinate, oppressive, unequal, and injustice treatments that basically ignore their rights as individual beings. These treatments were legalized in a set of Victorian values of “the cult of true womanhood”. However, as a result of American modernization, industrialization, and democracy, American women became increasingly, though gradually, more independent. Believing in their own abilities and potential for power, they obliged themselves to help their oppressed sisters and to seek the need for independence, self-respect and serious purpose in life. Apparently, this social conflict between the feminist and the conservatives had engendered political excesses in the era of American reform, in the form of women rights movement. Though, many sacrifices are greatly needed as the consequences of their struggle, at least American women have realized that the equality of human rights of men and women is far more important than sexual differences

Partial discharge (PD) is a well-known indicator of insulation problems in high voltage equipment. We report on experience collected during the development of a new online PD detection and alert system for air insulated switchgear (AIS) installed base. The approach taken to integrate the sensor with minimal retrofit effort and operational disruption is described. Results from a test setup including a line-up of panels and different reference PD sources in comparison to a commercial PD system are presented. The effect of cables connected to the switchgear is investigated by testing the system including additional capacitive load and using a simulation for a typical geometry. We also address the question regarding the design of an alert system to be used in connection with the continuous data acquisition

A Buffer Stocks Model for Stabilizing Price in Duopoly-Like Market

    No full text
This paper presents the staple-food distribution problem in agro-industry. There is a great difference of staple-food supplies in the harvest-season and in the planting-season meanwhile the demand is relatively constant. This situation will trigger price-volatility and shortage of staple-food, and it causes opportunity-losses for the stakeholders (producer, consumer, wholesaler/trader, and the government). For stabilizing the price, the government has several stabilization policies; one of them is market-intervention policy by using buffer-stocks schemes. The market-intervention policy should be utilized for improving producer’s profit, for cutting consumer’s expenditure, and for sustaining wholesaler’s margin-profit by implementing price-support and price-stabilization. In duopoly-like market, we assume that there are only two market-players in the distribution system. The objective of this research is to determine the instruments for operating Market-Intervention Program which consist of the quantity, time, and price of the buffer-stocks schemes. The problem was solved using 3 approaches. First, a comparative cost/benefit analysis between free-market and intervention-market can be used to formulate the objective function of each stakeholders. Second, the integration of optimization model and econometrics model were use to develop the decision-variables subject to the expectation of stakeholders, the buffer-stocks requirement, and the dynamics price equilibrium properties. Third, model market with Inventory was applied for solving the market-price equilibrium. The result could be used to analyze such the staple-food distribution system, incorporating the configuration of duo-producers, duo market-buyers, and duo-consumers. Keywords: buffer-stocks, duopoly-like market, market-intervention program, model market with inventory, and staple-food distribution system
