    About the Book Published in 1973, this pamphlet is No. 15 of the Studies in Chinese Communist Terminology series of the Center for Chinese Studies, UC Berkeley. A pioneer study of the seven dramatic works produced in China between the years of 1964 and 1966, this pamphlet focuses on the Chinese communist literary and art theory at that time, when theatrical productions and personnel were treated more or less the same as industrial or agricultural outputs and factory or farm workers, in terms of managerial control. It traces the origin and development of the term yang-pan 样板 ( yangban in pinyin, meaning template ) from agricultural to dramatic productions, and describes the political and ideological background against which the seven model dramas (five Beijing operas and two ballet dance-dramas) came into being. Based on the limited Chinese source materials available to the West in the early 1970s, it also provides scene-to-scene synopses of each of the seven dramas.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Development of the high-density DNA microarray technique permits the analysis of thousands of genes simultaneously for their differential expression patterns in various biological processes. Through clustering analysis and pattern recognition, the significance of differentially expressed genes can be recognized and correlated with biological events that may take place inside the cell and tissue. With this notion in mind, high-density DNA microarray nylon membrane with colorimetry detection was used to profile the expression of smoke- and hydrogen peroxide-inducible genes in a human bronchial epithelial cell line, HBE1. On the basis of the time course of expression, at least three phases of change in gene expression could be recognized. The first phase is an immediate event in response to oxidant injury. This phase includes induction of the bcl-2 and mdm-2 genes, which are involved in the regulation of apoptosis, and the mitogen- activated protein (MAP) kinase phosphatase 1 (MKP-1) gene, that functions as a regulator of various mitogen-activated protein kinase activities. The second phase, usually 5 h later, includes the induction of various stress proteins and ubiquitin, which are important in providing the chaperone mechanism and the turnover of damaged macromolecules. The third phase, which is 5-10 In later, includes the induction of genes that are apparently involved in reducing oxidative stress by metabolizing reactive oxygen species. In this phase, enzymes associated with tissue and cell remodeling are also elevated. These results demonstrate a complex gene expression array by bronchial epithelial cells in response to the insult of oxidants that are relevant to environmental pollutants

    Primary Pulmonary Plasmacytoma with Lobar Consolidation: An Unusual Presentation

    Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare form of plasma cell tumor that frequently involves the upper respiratory tract. Primary pulmonary plasmacytoma is even more rare. The usual presentation of primary pulmonary plasmacytoma is a solitary pulmonary nodule. We describe the case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with the chief complaints of progressive dyspnea on exertion, cough, and subsequently, hemoptysis. The main finding on chest imaging studies, including plain radiography, sonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, was consolidation of the right middle lobe. Percutaneous transthoracic lung biopsy of the right middle lobe demonstrated sheets of atypical plasma cells. Immunohistochemical study showed IgA lambda monoclonality. A bone marrow study and whole body bone scan showed normal findings. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of primacy pulmonary plasmacytoma presenting with lobar consolidation of the lung but without a well- defined tumor mass

    Induction of Pulmonary Fibrosis in Organ-Cultured Rat Lung by Cadmium Chloride and Transforming Growth Factor-Beta 1

    Cadmium chloride (CdCl2) exposure has been reported to induce pulmonary fibrosis in rats. Accumulating evidence has shown that cytokines play a pivotal role in the excessive production of connective tissue components in pulmonary fibrosis. In this report, rat lung slice cultures were used to study the synergistic involvement of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) in CdCl2-induced alveolar fibrosis. Rat lung slices were maintained at the interphase of air and medium on a polyester mesh stretched on a plastic scaffold. Treatment of lung slices with 2.5, 5 or 10 mu M CdCl2 for 7 days resulted in 85, 40 and 6% respectively for relative survival. Under these culture conditions, CdCl2 alone did not induce alveolar fibrosis in rat lung slices. However, in the presence of 0 .5 ng/ml TGF-beta 1, CdCl2 at a dose ranging from 1 to 5 mu M increased the thickness of alveolar septa. Furthermore, the thickness of alveolar septa in lung slices treated with CdCl2 was dose-dependently increased by the presence of TGF-beta 1. The thickened alveolar septa were apparently due to the deposition of excessive extracellular matrix, as revealed by trichrome stain and ultrastructural examination. Our results also show that fibrogenic activity induced by the combined treatment with CdCl2 and TGF-beta 1 can be reduced by co-treatment with 200 mu g/ml lambda- carrageenan, a TGF-beta 1 inhibitor. Therefore, the present results indicate that TGF-P 1 can synergistically stimulate the fibrogenic activity in lung tissue subsequent to CdCl2, injury. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd.     Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
