    Downlink Space–Time Spreading Using Interference Rejection Codes

    In this paper, the authors will investigate the performance of a loosely synchronized (LS) code-based space–time spreading (STS) scheme in comparison to that of classic Walsh code and pseudonoise code-based STS when communicating over dispersive Nakagami-m multipath channels. Closed-form formulas are derived for characterizing the bit-error-rate performance as a function of the number of resolvable paths L and the number of users K. Our numerical results suggest that the employment of LS code-based STS scheme is beneficial in a low-user-load and low-dispersion channel scenario, where a near-single-user performance can be achieved without a multiuser detector.     Intersystem soft handover for converged DVB-H and UMTS networks

    Digital video broadcasting for handhelds (DVB-H) is the standard for broadcasting Internet Protocol (IP) data services to mobile portable devices. To provide interactive services for DVB-H, the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) can be used as a terrestrial interaction channel for the unidirectional DVB-H network. The converged DVB-H and UMTS network can be used to address the congestion problems due to the limited multimedia channel accesses of the UMTS network. In the converged network, intersystem soft handover between DVB-H and UMTS is needed for an optimum radio resource allocation, which reduces network operation cost while providing the required quality of service. This paper deals with the intersystem soft handover between DVB-H and UMTS in such a converged network. The converged network structure is presented. A novel soft handover scheme is proposed and evaluated. After considering the network operation cost, the performance tradeoff between the network quality of service and the network operation cost for the intersystem soft handover in the converged network is modeled using a stochastic tree and analyzed using a numerical simulation. The results show that the proposed algorithm is feasible and has the potential to be used for implementation in the real environment

    Performance Evaluation of Distributed-Antenna Communications Systems Using Beam-Hopping

    Digital beamforming (DBF) techniques are capable of improving the performance of communications systems significantly. However, if the transmitted signals are conflicted with strong interference, especially, in the direction of the transmitted beams , these directional jamming signals will severely degrade the system performance. In order to efficiently mitigate the interference of the directional jammers, in this contribution a beam-hopping (BH) communications scheme is proposed. In the proposed BH communications scheme, only one pair of the beams is used for transmission and it hops from one to the next according to an assigned BH pattern. In this contribution a range of expressions in terms of the average SINR performance have been derived, when both the uplink and downlink are considered. The average SINR performance of the proposed BH scheme and that of the conventional single-beam (SB) as well as multiple-beam (MB) assisted beam-processing schemes have been investigated. Our analysis and results show that the proposed BH scheme is capable of efficiently combating the directional jamming, with the aid of utilizing the directional gain of the beams generated by both the transmitter and the receiver. Furthermore, the BH scheme is capable of reducing the intercept probability of the communications. Therefore, the proposed BH scheme is suitable for communications, when several distributed antenna arrays are available around a mobile

    Outsourcing and Skill Imports: Foreign High-Skilled Workers on H-1B and L-1 Visas in the United States

    This working paper looks in detail at the H-1B and L-1 visa programs for temporary employment in the United States. Based on official data from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services and the US Department of State, H-1B and L-1 visa issuance rapidly increased in the late 1990s, followed by a marked slowdown after 2001. This points to the highly cyclical nature of both visa programs. Indian nationals and immigrants working in computer-related occupations dominate the H1-B and L-1 population in the United States, but these two groups are also found to be the most cyclical segment, with very large declines in inflows after 2001. The total population of H-1B visaholders in 2003 is estimated to range between 387,000 and 746,000, of which 160,000 to 306,000 were Indian nationals. As all data on H-1B/L-1 visaholders are gross numbers and gross jobs data for comparable categories are absent, the extent of the impact of these visa programs on the US labor market cannot be gauged precisely. A broad range of US industries and educational institutions are found to be employing H-1B recipients, with the IT industry being the dominant sector. Evidence of aggressive wage-cost cutting, including paying H-1B recipients only the legally mandated 95 percent of the prevailing US wage, is found among some H-1B employers, although no systematic abuse of the system is present.Outsourcing, offshoring, high-skilled labor, immigration, H1B/L-1 visas

    Slow Frequency Hopping Assisted MC DS-CDMA using Large Area Synchronised Spreading Sequences

    The family of Multi-Carrier Direct-Sequence CDMA (MC DS- CDMA) systems exhibits numerous attractive properties, which render them attractive candidates for next-generation wireless communications. We demonstrate that spreading codes exhibiting a so-called interference-free window (IFW) are capable of outperforming classic spreading codes, when the interfering multi-user and multipath components arrive within this IFW. The best possible quasi-synchronous timing of the spreading sequences has to be adjusted with the aid of accurate adaptive timing advance control, which has to be significantly more accurate than that used in the lower-bit-rate second-generation GSM system. Fortunately, the IFW duration may be extended with the advent of multi-carrier DS-CDMA proportionately to the number of subcarriers. Hence the resultant MC DS-CDMA system is capable of exhibiting a near-single-user performance without employing a multi-user detector. A deficiency of the resultant system is that the number of spreading codes exhibiting a certain IFW is limited and so is the IFW duration. This contribution sets out to mitigate the above-mentioned shortcomings so that when the users' delays are in the range of the IFW, we separate them with the aid of the unique, user-specific LAS spreading codes. By contrast, when the users roam at a high distance from the base-station and hence their received signal arrive outside the range of the IFW, we separate them using their unique frequency hopping patterns

    Multiuser Detection Assisted Time- and Frequency-Domain Spread Multicarrier Code-Division Multiple-Access

    In this contribution, we study a reduced-complexity multiuser detection aided multicarrier direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (MC DS-CDMA) scheme, which employs both time (T)-domain and frequency (F)-domain spreading. We investigate the achievable detection performance in the context of synchronous TF-domain spread MC DS-CDMA when communicating over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Five detection schemes are investigated, which include the single-user correlation based detector, the joint TF-domain decorrelating multiuser detector (MUD), the joint TF-domain MMSEMUD, the separate TF-domain decorrelating/MMSE MUD, and the separate TF-domain MMSE/decorrelating MUD. Our simulation results show that the separate TF-domain MUD schemes are capable of achieving a similar bit error rate (BER) performance to that of the significantly more complex joint TF-domain MUD schemes. Based on the well-known Fornasini–Marchesini local state-space (FMLSS) model, the mathematical model of 2-D systems under consideration is established by incorporating the parameter-varying phenomenon. The purpose of the problem addressed is to design full-order H∞ and l2–l∞ filters such that the filtering error dynamics is asymptotic stable and the prescribed noise attenuation levels in H∞ and l2–l∞ senses can be achieved, respectively. Sufficient conditions are derived for existence of such filters in terms of parameterized linear matrix inequalities (PLMIs), and the corresponding filter synthesis problem is then transformed into a convex optimization problem that can be efficiently solved by using standard software packages. A simulation example is exploited to demonstrate the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed design method

    Adaptive Space-Time-Spreading-Assisted Wideband CDMA Systems Communicating over Dispersive Nakagami-m Fading Channels

    In this contribution, the performance of wideband code-division multiple-access (W-CDMA) systems using space-timespreading-(STS-) based transmit diversity is investigated, when frequency-selective Nakagami-m fading channels, multiuser interference, and background noise are considered. The analysis and numerical results suggest that the achievable diversity order is the product of the frequency-selective diversity order and the transmit diversity order. Furthermore, both the transmit diversity and the frequency-selective diversity have the same order of importance. Since W-CDMA signals are subjected to frequency-selective fading, the number of resolvable paths at the receiver may vary over a wide range depending on the transmission environment encountered. It can be shown that, for wireless channels where the frequency selectivity is sufficiently high, transmit diversity may be not necessitated. Under this case, multiple transmission antennas can be leveraged into an increased bitrate. Therefore, an adaptive STS-based transmission scheme is then proposed for improving the throughput ofW-CDMA systems. Our numerical results demonstrate that this adaptive STS-based transmission scheme is capable of significantly improving the effective throughput of W-CDMA systems. Specifically, the studied W-CDMA system’s bitrate can be increased by a factor of three at the modest cost of requiring an extra 0.4 dB or 1.2 dB transmitted power in the context of the investigated urban or suburban areas, respectively

    On the Performance of Band-Limited Asynchronous DS-CDMA over Nakagami-m Channels

    In this paper we investigated the BER performance of DS-CDMA using various chip-waveforms, which include three time-limited chip-waveforms and two band-limited chipwaveforms. Closed-form formulae were derived for evaluating the achievable bit-error rate performance with the aid of the standard Gaussian approximation, when communicating over a Nakagami-m channel. The time-limited waveforms impose a low implementational complexity, since they maybe oversampled and read from a look-up table. However, they are outperformed by the frequency-domain raised-cosine waveform as well as the optimum waveform specifically designed by Cho and Lehnert for achieving the lowest possible bit error rate.
