Environmental impact assessment of life-cycle building products using the evidence reasoning approach

    No full text
The consumption of resources and impact on the environment differ at every stage of building product life cycle, thus this paper aims to establish an indicator system to assess the environmental impact of building product life cycle. For the uncertainty and ambiguity during indicator measurement, evidence theory is added in this system. This paper chooses a case of the selection of four building types in a university campus, using different risk types of utility function to reflect the preference of different stakeholders in the assessment. Environmental impact brought by each type of building is evaluated respectively from the public, designers and owners, developers and contractors. And the final choice is given

Development of novel gene delivery system for cancer therapy

    No full text
In this thesis, novel biodegradable charged polyester-based vectors (BCPVs) were designed and synthesized as siRNA carrier for cancer treatment. Under optimized conditions, the BCPV can effectively protect siRNA from degradation by RNase in the serum, and would subsequently promote intracellular siRNA uptake via endocytosis. The formulation and usage of BCPV-based siRNA carriers cause significant inhibition of targeted abnormal proto‐oncogenes expression in adherent growth cells (pancreatic cancer cell line) and non-adherent growth cells (leukemia cell line), resulting in obvious inhibition of cancer cell bioactivity. In addition, BCPV was able to simultaneously co-deliver K-ras and Notch1 siRNA into pancreatic cancer cells to overcome chemotherapeutic drug resistance (Gemcitabine) by reversing the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Lastly, BCPV, as modifying polymer, was used to coat the surface of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) for fabrication of multifunctional siRNA and drug co-delivery systems, which realized real-time monitoring of the delivery efficacy and distribution of the drugs and siRNA.Doctor of Philosophy (EEE

BackgroundTwo-dose varicella vaccination has been available in Beijing since 2012 in the private sector. We investigated a varicella outbreak in a highly vaccinated elementary school population.MethodsA cohort study was carried out and a varicella case was defined as an acute onset of generalized maculopapulovesicular rash without other apparent cause in a student attending the school from March 29 through May 17, 2015. Breakthrough varicella was defined as varicella >42 days after the last vaccine dose among both 1- or 2-dose varicella vaccine recipients. Vaccination information was collected from immunization records; information on prior varicella and clinical presentations was collected by surveying students\u2019 parents.ResultsOf the 1056 students in the school, 1027 (97.3%) reported no history of varicella. Prior to the outbreak, 98.6% of students had received 651 dose of varicella vaccine, and most (63.2%) students received two doses. Twenty varicella cases were identified for an overall attack rate of 2.0%. Half of the cases occurred in the classroom of the index case-patient, a two-dose recipient who was not isolated after symptom onset. Breakthrough varicella accounted for 95% of cases (19/20) with attack rates of 14.3% (1/7), 1.6% (6/362) and 2.0% (13/649) among unvaccinated, one-dose, and two-dose students, respectively. Most case-patients (18/20, 90%) had <50 lesions. No difference in clinical presentations was found between one-dose and two-dose recipients with breakthrough varicella.ConclusionModerate two-dose varicella vaccine coverage was insufficient to prevent a varicella outbreak. Two-dose recipients with breakthrough varicella are contagious. High two-dose varicella vaccine coverage and timely isolation of cases may be needed for varicella outbreak prevention in the two-dose era.CC999999/Intramural CDC HHSUnited States

Research on Military-Political Factors in the Transition of the Financial Center in the Sichuan-Chongqing Area Before the Anti-Japanese War

In the modern times, a major event was the transition of the financial center in the Sichuan-Chongqing area, which was caused by the fact that Chongqing was opened as a commercial port. The transition process was basically completed before the Anti-Japanese War. Academic circles have conducted in-depth studies from some factors such as Chongqing’s geography and transport, but the researches on the military-political factors in the transition are seldom made, especially on “the War of Two Warlords Surnamed Liu”, namely, war between two warlords of Liu Xiang and Liu Wenhui, before the unification of Sichuan Government, resulting in the establishment of Chongqing financial advantages; in addition, the research on how the Nanjing Government selected and established Chongqing as the financial center of the home front is less conducted. As a matter of fact, before “the War of Two Warlords Surnamed Liu”,Chongqing-centered financial circles have the advantages, but are insufficient to cover and radiate the Chengdu-centered financial circles. The ultimate victory of Liu Xiang military-political group played a pivotal role in the long-term transition, thereafter, Chiang Kai-shek group expelled Liu Xiang group out of the nest of Chongqing because of dual political scheme of “suppressing the communist and intending on Sichuan”, furthermore, strived to establish Chongqing as the financial center of the Anti-Japanese War and the founding of the state. Finally, the goal has come true through the baptism of the Anti-Japanese War

BackgroundVaricella vaccine has been available in the private sector in China for a decade as a single-dose regimen, but varicella vaccine effectiveness (VE) has not been fully examined in school settings yet.MethodsA matched case\u2013control study was carried out in elementary schools and daycares in Tai\u2019an prefecture, Shandong province, China. Clinical diagnosis of varicella and breakthrough disease was used for this study. Four controls were randomly selected from classmates; two from classmates of the case and two from another class of the same grade without cases. Vaccination status, date of vaccination, and vaccine product received if vaccinated were collected from home and clinic immunization records. Vaccination status of all students in schools/daycares with varicella cases from home immunization records or parental recall was used to calculate vaccination coverage.ResultsThe overall varicella VE was 83.4% (95% confidence interval 71.4\u201390.3%). Receipt of varicella vaccine five years or more years before the outbreak was significantly associated with breakthrough varicella (odds ratio = 4.7, P < 0.001), while age at vaccination (<15 vs. 6515 months) was not (odds ratio = 1.5, P = 0.62). Varicella vaccination coverage was 41% with substantial variation across schools (range of 0\u201393.8%).ConclusionsSingle-dose varicella vaccine is highly effective in school settings. Maintaining limited vaccination coverage might shift varicella disease burden to older individuals, who are more prone to develop severe outcomes if varicella occurs.CC999999/Intramural CDC HHSUnited States

Landslide Displacement Prediction during the Sliding Process Using XGBoost, SVR and RNNs

    No full text
In order to promptly evacuate personnel and property near the foot of the landslide and take emergency treatment measures in case of sudden danger, it is very necessary to select suitable forecasting methods for conduct short-term displacement predictions in the slope-sliding process. In this paper, we used Python to develop the landslide displacement-prediction method based on the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm, and optimized the hyperparameters through a genetic algorithm to solve the problem of insufficient short-term displacement-prediction accuracy for landslides. We compared the deviation, relative error (RE) and median of RE of predicted values obtained using XGBoost, SVR and RNNs, and the actual value of landslide displacement. The results show that the accuracies of slope displacement prediction using XGBoost and SVR are very high, and that using RNNs is very low during the sliding process. For large displacement values and small numbers of samples, the displacement-prediction effect of XGBoost algorithm is better than that of SVR and RNNs in the sliding process of landslide. There are generally only fewer data samples collected during the landslide sliding process, so RNNs is not suitable for displacement prediction in this scenario. If the number of data samples is large enough, using RNNs to predict the long-term displacement of the slope may also have a much higher accuracy
