This thesis presents the study, revision and edition of three pieces for string orchestra by Joly Braga Santos (JBS): the Concerto for String Orchestra, op. 17, the Sinfonietta for String Orchestra, op. 35 and the Divertimento II for String Orchestra, op. 52. The main objective of this study is to create a revised edition of the three pieces, based on research and analysis of existing manuscripts and existing bibliographic material. Despite great improvement over the last decades, there is still a serious lack of availability of scores and orchestral material in good condition. The aim of this thesis is to raise awareness and recognition of the above mentioned works. In addition, it will also allow a deeper understanding of the scores, which will result in more accurate and educated interpretation

The author is a Baptist pastor with Italian roots and a well-known writer on both sides of the Atlantic in the realm of Christian spirituality. The book cover itself announces his success with the large heading “more than 500,000 sold,” raising both curiosity as well as concerned German eye brows wondering about the modesty of the author and/or the need of the publishing house to push the book. However, to be honest, American culture is very different in many ways. And that is well demonstrated throughout the whole book

    Standards issues in data communications

    No full text
The lack of development in standards and compatibility in the field of data communication and processing requires urgent attention. The author discusses the compatibility issues that arise from the introduction of packet-switching networks, which typify the growing interdependence of computer and communication technologies. Focusing on Canada as a case example, he examines issues relating to the compatibility between the communication services offered by different networks and communication functions used for distributed data processing, and also between the procedures employed to provide these services and functions.

The principal objectives of this thesis, “The story of a seagull and the cat that taught it to fly: the creation of music for children as part of artistic and social ethics”, are the research of the political, social and ethical context in which musical melodrama for children of the 20th century (music tales and others) was created, with special emphasis on the first half of the century during which the problem was formed and became more acute, and the analysis of a work written in this genre by the author, The story of a seagull and the cat that taught it to fly (story by Luis Sepúlveda and music by Sérgio Azevedo), that provides a means of reflection on the questions raised by the initial historical research. This thesis also aims to fill the gap, at least in part, left by the lack of study of this particular subject. The first of the two themes – the political context of the arts in the 20th century – is dealt with extensively; the bibliography for second – history and analysis of the music written for children in the 20th century – is very sparse; treatment of the relationship between the two is virtually non-existent. This fact demonstrates the dismissive way in which the subject continues to be treated, and this research is carried out with the intention of setting straight this long-held preconception. To reach these goals the thesis has been divided into two parts: research into the social and political context of musical melodrama for children in the 20th century, in which the principal composers, political contexts and aesthetic movements related to the subject are studied, and a detailed analysis of literary and musical aspects of The story of a seagull and the cat that taught it to fly. This analysis takes into account the conclusions drawn from the historical research of the first part and results in the fundaments of the composer’s belief as to what music for children should be: an important genre that not only contributes to the enrichment of a human being at a stage when his personality and intellect are still being formed, but also has the capacity to interest the fully formed adult listener in a context of total aesthetic and ideological freedom

Evaluation of psychological interventions to reduce cigarette littering

    No full text
In the planned online study two intervention techniques for the reduction of cigarette littering are to be evaluated in a randomised controlled trial. Cigarette littering means the incorrect disposal of cigarettes outside rubbish bins and ashtrays. For this purpose, two experimental groups (EG1, EG2) and one control group (CG) are chosen. On the theoretical basis of the slightly adapted Extended Model of Normative Decision Making (Klöckner & Matthies, 2004) relevant behavioural factors were determined and according to that suitable intervention techniques were selected based on Mosler und Tobias (2007). In the EG1 a factual text and matching pictures will be used for the provision of information referring to problem- and action-knowledge on the environmental issues of cigarette littering. In the EG2 prompts (‘Cigarette in the bin please!’) are placed on bins in four of five hypothetical scenarios. Cigarette littering will be measured also by using the five hypothetical scenarios. The participants are asked to indicate how likely they are to choose the disposal options shown (rubbish bin/ashtray, floor, other disposal options, etc.) on pictorial cut outs from the scenarios. Established scales were adapted and will be used to assess behaviourally relevant psychological constructs from the model (awareness of need, awareness of consequences, perceived behavioral control, personal norm, social norm, habits) and for other constructs

Voice Compression and Communications: Principles and Applications for Fixes and Wireless Channels

    No full text
Up-to-date, expert coverage of topics in wireless voice communications Voice communication is the most important facet of mobile radio service. Even when the predicted surge of wireless data and Internet services becomes a reality, voice will remain the most natural means of human communication. Voice Compression and Communications details issues in wireless voice communications and treats compression, channel coding, and wireless transmission as a joint subject. Part I covers background material, whereas Part II provides detailed information on both proprietary and standardized analysis-by-synthesis codecs, including the speech codecs of virtually all existing wireline-based and wireless systems. Parts III and IV discuss mainly research-based wideband, audio, as well as very low-rate schemes likely to find their way into future standards. Voice Compression and Communications describes fundamental concepts in a non-mathematical way early in the book for those with only a background knowledge of signal processing and communications. More advanced readers will find detailed discussions of theoretical principles, future concepts, and solutions to various specific wireless voice communications problems

Jeux d’anches - Accordionistic musical education through musical performance

Since the second half of the XX century, with the invention of the converter system, original writing for accordion has come, generating new challenges to interpreters, composers and the instrument itself. Obviously, to approach new works, musicians have been achieving increasingly strict, disciplined and transversal levels of musical preparation and knowledgement in order to achieve contemporary language and technique skills. In this context, there is a vast repertoire of new works, such as: Berio Sequenze, Gubaidulina De Profundis, Bochmann Essay XVIII, among others, whose contribution to the music teaching and instrumental practice has a determinant role in the pedagogical and performance fields. The piece Jeux d’Anches, composed by Magnus Lindberg, is also on the list as an important contribut to explore the instrument (accordion) in the high level dimension and potential. Through this article, the author pretends to reflect about the accordionistic musical education, to introduce new performance possibilities and to discuss new writing techniques for classical accordion.CESEM - Centro de Estudos em Músic
