    Response of Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur L.) to Adverse Environmental Conditions in Genetic and Dendrochronological Studies

    Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) is widely distributed across Europe and serves critical ecological, economic, and recreational functions. Investigating its responses to stressors such as drought, extreme temperatures, pests, and pathogens provides valuable insights into its capacity to adapt to climate change. Genetic and dendrochronological studies offer complementary perspectives on this adaptability. Tree-ring analysis (dendrochronology) reveals how Q. robur has historically responded to environmental stressors, linking growth patterns to specific conditions such as drought or temperature extremes. By examining tree-ring width, density, and dynamics, researchers can identify periods of growth suppression or enhancement and predict forest responses to future climatic events. Genetic studies further complement this by uncovering adaptive genetic diversity and inheritance patterns. Identifying genetic markers associated with stress tolerance enables forest managers to prioritize the conservation of populations with higher adaptive potential. These insights can guide reforestation efforts and support the development of climate-resilient oak populations. By integrating genetic and dendrochronological data, researchers gain a holistic understanding of Q. robur’s mechanisms of resilience. This knowledge is vital for adaptive forest management and sustainable planning in the face of environmental challenges, ultimately helping to ensure the long-term viability of oak populations and their ecosystems. The topics covered in this review are very broad. We tried to include the most relevant, important, and significant studies, but focused mainly on the relatively recent Eastern European studies because they include the most of the species’ area. However, although more than 270 published works have been cited in this review, we have, of course, missed some published studies. We apologize in advance to authors of those relevant works that have not been cited

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    This study employs a novel combination of methods (DNA metabarcoding, light microscopy, two methods for decay rating, moisture dynamics, and chemical analysis) to characterise wood decay in cultural heritage cable car pylons in Svalbard, offering an interdisciplinary approach for characterisation of fungal decay processes and patterns in an extreme environment, i.e. polar regions. The pylons share a uniform design but vary in age, providing a unique opportunity to examine time-dependent decay progression in wooden cultural heritage objects. Light microscopy revealed the use of both P. abies and Pinus sylvestris in the cable car pylons. As expected, the decay rate was significantly slower in aboveground wood compared to ground proximity, affecting basic density, lignin, and holocellulose content, with lignin increasing as decay advanced. Fungal community analysis using DNA metabarcoding, confirmed by light microscopy, showed a dominance of brown rot and soft rot fungi, with ground proximity samples exhibiting higher fungal diversity than those exposed aboveground. The analysis revealed 28 wood decay fungi identified for the first time in Svalbard, and 25 for the first time in polar regions. In a changing climate, this underscores the global importance of detailed characterisation of fungal decay processes and patterns in valuable wooden constructions, not only wooden cultural heritage. Additionally, it highlights the need for continuous monitoring and updating of status lists, as new species can significantly impact ecological, maintenance, and conservation strategies. The combination of a diverse array of analytical methods used in this study presents a robust and comprehensive approach for understanding microbial interactions and decay processes, surpassing the insight provided by single-method assessments

    Mass spectrometry reveals the presence of specific set of epigenetic DNA modifications in the Norway spruce genome

    5-Methylcytosine (5mC) is an epigenetic modification involved in regulation of gene expression in metazoans and plants. Iron-(II)/α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases can oxidize 5mC to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), 5-formylcytosine (5fC) and 5-carboxylcytosine (5caC). Although these oxidized forms of 5mC may serve as demethylation intermediates or contribute to transcriptional regulation in animals and fungi, experimental evidence for their presence in plant genomes is ambiguous. Here, employing reversed-phase HPLC coupled with sensitive mass spectrometry, we demonstrated that, unlike 5caC, both 5hmC and 5fC are detectable in non-negligible quantities in the DNA of a conifer, Norway spruce. Remarkably, whereas 5hmC content of spruce DNA is approximately 100-fold lower relative to human colorectal carcinoma cells, the levels of both - 5fC and a thymine base modification, 5-hydroxymethyluracil, are comparable in these systems. We confirmed the presence of modified DNA bases by immunohistochemistry in Norway spruce buds based on peroxidase-conjugated antibodies and tyramide signal amplification. Our results reveal the presence of specific range of noncanonical DNA bases in conifer genomes implying potential roles for these modifications in plant development and homeostasis
