    This paper investigates the narrative strategies of representation used by the Indian author Vinod Kumar in his literary writing about the life and spaces of the Adivasi. The focal point of this study consists in the fact that the author is a non-Adivasi, thus placing him and his writing in the center of a very much debated issue of Hindi literature i.e. the polarity between the writing through sympathy (Hindi sahānubhūti) and the writing through personal experience (anubhūti). This study-case looks at how the author, being a dikū, an outsider describes the ‘other’ (i.e. the Adivasi). The results show that the author’s representation of the Adivasi, based on a solid empirical knowledge of his ‘other’, contains some elements of romanticism revealing both his outsideness and a strong empathy for the ‘other’.Masteruppsats i indologi 2019</p

    Marker assisted backcross breeding was employed to incorporate the blast resistance genes, Pi2 and Pi54 and bacterial blight (BB) resistance genes xa13 and Xa21 into the genetic background of Pusa Basmati 1121 (PB1121) and Pusa Basmati 6. Foreground selection for target gene(s) was followed by arduous phenotypic and background selection which fast-tracked the recovery of recurrent parent genome (RPG) to an extent of 95.8% in one of the near-isogenic lines (NILs) namely, Pusa 1728-23-33-31-56, which also showed high degree of resemblance to recurrent parent, PB6 in phenotype. The phenotypic selection prior to background selection provided an additional opportunity for identifying the novel recombinants viz., Pusa 1884-9-12-14 and Pusa 1884-3-9-175, superior to parental lines in terms of early maturity, higher yield and improved quality parameters. There was no significant difference between the RPG recovery estimated based on SSR or SNP markers, however, the panel of SNPs markers was considered as the better choice for background selection as it provided better genome coverage and included SNPs in the genic regions. Multi-location evaluation of NILs depicted their stable and high mean performance in comparison to the respective recurrent parents. The Pi2 + Pi54 carrying NILs were effective in combating a pan-India panel of Magnaporthe oryzae isolates with high level of field resistance in northern, eastern and southern parts of India. Alongside, the PB1121-NILs and PB6-NILs carrying BB resistance genes xa13+Xa21 were resistant against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae races of north-western, southern and eastern parts of the country. Micronutrient bioavailability from cereals is poor to monogastric animals due to presence of phytate as a chelating agent in seeds and an exogenous application of phytases is required to overcome antinutritional effect of phytate. In the present investigation, 40 fungal isolates including Aspergillus, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Toliposporium, Cladosporium, Talaromyces etc. from different habitats were screened positive for phytase activity on specific media. On the basis of phytase production potential in solid state fermentation conditions, plant epiphytic fungi Penicillium oxalicum strain EUFR-3 has been observed with maximum phytase activity of 12.8 U/g. The biochemical properties i.e. activity and stability under optimum pH and temperature, and effect of modulators on phytase activity from this isolate were studied for its prospective application in human food. The P. oxalicum EUFR-3 phytase (PhyP-EUFR3) had maximum activity at pH 7.0 and temperature 40 °C. It was stable in pH range of 3-8 with more than 60 % activity throughout investigation. The thermostability of PhyP-EUFR3 was about 30 % residual activities after 10 min at 80 °C. Further purification, characterization and study of catalytic mechanism will be useful in better utilization of this phytase in human food for increased bioavailability of important metal ions.</jats:p

    Prevalence of coronary artery disease in asymptomatic type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with invasive correlation in North India

    Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD). Material and Methods: In this study, we assessed the prevalence of CAD in asymptomatic T2DM patients and its correlation with invasive testing in treadmill testing (TMT)-positive cases. A total of 90 patients with asymptomatic T2DM were recruited and subjected to TMT TMT-positive patients were subjected to coronary angiography (CAG). Results: At baseline, the mean duration of T2DM (years) was 4.87 ± 4.04 with mean levels of HbA1c (%) of 7.96 ± 1.02. TMT was positive in 28 patients (31.1%) for reversible myocardial ischaemia (RMI), and among them, 16 patients consented to CAG, of which 14 required coronary angioplasty and the remaining two (7.1%) had to undergo coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The remaining 12 TMT positives (42.9%) were managed medically. Conclusion: To conclude, there is a high prevalence of silent CAD in T2DM. They need regular screening to detect the same and prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with overt CAD. Hence, it is important to screen people with type 2 diabetes, to prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with overt CAD

    Abstract 3842: Comprehensive genomic analysis demonstrates concordance of PDX models and patient tumor cohorts

    Abstract The Jackson Laboratory has established more than 400 unique patient-derived xenograft (PDX) cancer models from patient tumors in the immunocompromised NOD.Cg-Prkdcscid Il2rgtm1Wjl/SzJ (aka, NSGTM) mouse strain, spanning across more than 30 tumor types. At low passages, these engrafted models are known to retain similar molecular characteristics and heterogeneity to the originating human tumor. As such, PDX models offer an excellent preclinical platform to test drug responses of novel cancer therapeutics and a powerful resource for conducting preclinical cancer pharmacogenomic studies. To aid the selection of suitable PDX models for preclinical studies and for the research purpose to understand tumor biology and response or resistance to a given treatment, we have characterized the PDX models for their transcriptomic, mutational and copy number profiles using sequencing and array approaches. We have established a compendium of PDX-tailored computational pipelines as the analysis of genomic data from PDX models could be challenging due to a) the contamination of PDX sample with mouse stroma, which complicates downstream bioinformatics analyses as mouse genome is almost 90% homologous to the human genome, and b) the lack of matched normal material to call somatic events. Our pipelines incorporate various filters to identify tumor specific single nucleotide variants, indels, copy number changes and expression profile in the PDX model. For the purpose of validating the accuracy of our analysis pipelines and demonstrating that the JAX PDX models are indeed representative of patient tumors, we compared JAX’s PDX cohort with patient cohorts in TCGA for mutations, copy number aberrations and RNA expression concordance. Using gene sets representative of each tumor type, we found that the overall genomic profile of each PDX tumor type is more correlated to the same tumor type in TCGA than other tumor types. In addition, an integrative analysis across all data types reveals that there are more common affected pathways between the same tumor type in PDX and TCGA. This comprehensive analysis revealed that the PDX and patient cohorts exhibit similar molecular characteristics, hence establishing the suitability of JAX PDX models as in vivo models to study fundamental tumor biology as well as to carry out preclinical studies of cancer drugs, including identification of biomarkers of response or resistance.
