    Os pomares de citrus das principais regiões do Estado de São Paulo vem sendo prejudicados pela cochonilha pardinha Selenaspidus sp. que suga a seiva das folhas e provoca a queda dos frutos. O uso indiscriminado de defensivos químicos vem contribuindo para a destruição dos inimigos naturais e consequente proliferação da praga. Com o objetivo de estudar a frequência ou a porcentagem de parasitismo dessa cochonilha, foram feitas coletas de folhas de laranjeira para valência de um pomar de 500 alqueires localizado em Brotas - SP, em 4 épocas diferentes dos anos de 1989/90. As folhas infestadas foram examinadas ao microscópio estetoscópio para contagem das carapaças com perfurações de saída dos parasitóides. Foram colocadas algumas folhas em placas de Petri para observacao da emergência dos parasitóides. As maiores porcentagens de parasitismo foram observadas nos meses de abril/90 (21,9%) e outubro/89 (21,4%) e a menor, (2,11%) em julho/89. Os parasitóides emergidos foram identificados preliminarmente por ROBBS como sendo Aphytis sp

    Postsynaptic localization of PSD-95 is regulated by all three pathways downstream of TrkB signaling

    BDNF and its receptor TrkB regulate synaptic plasticity. TrkB triggers three downstream signaling pathways; Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), Phospholipase Cγ (PLC γ) and Mitogen activated protein kinases/ Extracellular signal-regulated kinases (MAPK/ERK). We previously showed two distinct mechanisms whereby BDNF-TrkB pathway controls trafficking of PSD-95, which is the major scaffold at excitatory synapses and is critical for synapse maturation. BDNF activates the PI3K-Akt pathway and regulates synaptic delivery of PSD-95 via vesicular transport (Yoshii et al. 2007). BDNF-TrkB signaling also triggers PSD-95 palmitoylation and its transport to synapses through the phosphorylation of the palmitoylation enzyme ZDHHC8 by a Protein kinase C (PKC) (Yoshii et al. 2011). The second study used PKC inhibitors chelerythrine as well as a synthetic zeta inhibitory peptide (ZIP) which was originally designed to block the brain-specific PKC isoform protein kinase Mζ (PKMζ). However, recent studies raise concerns about specificity of ZIP. Here, we assessed the contribution of TrkB and its three downstream pathways to the synaptic distribution of endogenous PSD-95 in cultured neurons using chemical and genetic interventions. We confirmed that TrkB, PLC and PI3K were critical for the postsynaptic distribution of PSD-95. Furthermore, suppression of MAPK/ERK also disrupted PSD-95 expression. Next, we examined the contribution of PKC. While both chelerythrine and ZIP suppressed the postsynaptic localization of PSD-95, RNA interference for PKMζ did not have a significant effect. This result suggests that the ZIP peptide, widely used as the specific PKMζ antagonist by many investigators may block a PKC variant other than PKMζ such as PKCλ/ι. Our results indicate that TrkB regulates postsynaptic localization of PSD-95 through all three downstream pathways, but also recommend further work to identify other PKC variants that regulate palmitoylation and synaptic localization of PSD-95

    Synergic Entrainment of Drosophila's Circadian Clock by Light and Temperature

    Daily light and temperature cycles are considered the most important zeitgebers for circadian clocks in many organisms. The influence of each single zeitgeber on the clock has been well studied, but little is known about any synergistic effects of both zeitgebers on the clock. In nature, light and temperature show characteristic daily oscillations with the temperature rising during the light phase and reaching its maximum in the late afternoon. Here, we studied behavioral and molecular rhythms in Drosophila melanogaster under simulated natural low light-dark (LD) and temperature (T) cycles that typically occur during the September equinox. Wild-type flies were either subjected to simulated LD or T cycles alone or to a combination of both. Behavioral rhythms and molecular rhythms in the different clock neurons were assessed under the 3 different conditions. Although behavioral rhythms entrained to all conditions, the rhythms were most robust under the combination of LD and T cycles. The clock neurons responded differently to LD and T cycles. Some were not entrained by T cycles alone; others were only slightly entrained by LD cycles alone. The amplitude of the molecular cycling was not different between LD alone and T cycles alone; but LD alone could set the pacemaker neurons to similar phases, whereas T cycles alone could not. The combination of the 2 zeitgebers entrained all clock neurons not only with similar phase but also enhanced the amplitude of Timeless cycling in the majority of cells.     As pragas inseticidas sobre a mangueira indica podem causar perdas de produção de frutos, como pode ser o caso das cochonilhas. Foi feito levantamento da incidência de cochonilhas Aulacaspis turbecularis e Lecanium sp. e avaliado seu parasitismo para a seleção de medidas fitossanitárias a serem adotadas. Observou-se reduzida a incidência desses insetos que estão sendo mantidos sob eficiente controle exercido pelo braconídeos parasitódes, ocorrendo baixa incidência das cochonilhas com alta porcentagem de parasitismo. As pulverizações contra cochonilhas nos pomares estudados além de dispensáveis, deveriam ser evitadas para a preservação de seus inimigos naturais

    O diaspidideo S. articulatus e uma praga polifaga que vem infestando citros em várias regiões do Brasil e de outros países que praticam a citricultura. Sugando a seiva e inoculando toxinas na planta hospedeira, vem causando sérios prejuízos a citricultura nacional. Este trabalho teve como objetivo a avaliação do parasitismo da cochonilha por microhimenopteros na região de Jaguariúna-SP e Limeira-SP. Alem do parasitismo por microhimenopteros, encontrou-se o fungo Aschersonia aleyrodis infestando fêmeas de S. articulatus. Observou-se que em época de menor incidência da cochonilha, ocorria maior incidência do parasitismo. Foi observado também menor incidência dessa praga em pomares não capinados e não pulverizados

    The present report is based on materials mainly collected by myself in the year 1965 sponsored by the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies of the Kyoto University. From the collection various species have been detected, some are new to science, but others are the recognition of those already described and for the latters the new diagnosis is given. The most impressive finding is Callyntrura lineata (Parona, 1892), on which the subgenus Handschinphysa Paclt, 1945 is based. Besides, the subgenus Sultanaphysa Yoshii, 1982 is more intensively characterized and a Burmese species, C. elongata (Carpenter, 1917) is recovered

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
