Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full text本論文は大正期・美学者中井宗太郎(1879～1966)の渡欧体験とその後の彼の研究への影響について論じている。新出の京都市立芸術大学芸術資料館所蔵・中井宗太郎・あい関連資料に含まれる, 滞欧中の宗太郎とその妻あい(1890～1978)の書簡を中心に用いて, 分析をおこなった。中井夫妻が欧州にわたったのは, 大正11年(1922)4月～大正12(1923)年4月のことである。彼ら二人とともに, 日本画家の菊池契月, 入江波光, 吹田草牧, 装潢師の伏原佳一郎が渡欧している。夫妻はパリを拠点に, ロンドン, ドイツ, イタリア, スペインにも足をのばし, 各地の美術館や遺跡などをまわった。とりわけ, 宗太郎が注目していたのは古代と近代の美術である。精神性や自然観照といった西洋美術内の東洋美術的な要素に着目する視点は, 渡欧前から見られるものの, さらに意を強くしたようである。ルーブル美術館に日参しとりくんだ古代美術の研究により, 帰国後『氷河時代と埃及芸術』(1923年)と『希臘芸術』(1925年)が刊行された。そこには作品の実見による成果のほか, エリー・フォールの著書などが参照されており, 滞欧中の研究の実態が垣間見られる。一方, 画廊等で目にしたドイツ・フランスの新作絵画や, 現地で目にした日本美術展覧会(Expositiond'Art Japonais)の出品作には期待を裏切られたようだ。その感想を元に書かれた「日本畫の行くべき道」(『大毎美術』19号, 1924年)では, 芸術とは「絶対精神」を基礎として「時代精神」を反映した作品を生み出すこと, その方法については近代の西洋美術の発展方法から教訓を得ることなどを論じている。帰国後の中井は日本美術史研究に注力していくが, 西洋美術研究の成果は, 桃山美術は日本のルネッサンスとする見解や, 『絵画論』(1947年)第十章「浪漫主義と仏画--法隆寺金堂壁画の美的価値」などに見られる, 西洋美術・日本美術の枠を超えて普遍的な美術の価値やその創造を論ずる考察などに現れている。This paper looks at how the year art aesthetician Nakai Sotaro (1879-1966) spent studying in Europe (1922-1923) later influenced his research. Letters during his European stay are used as the main source of information, while newly available materials related to him and his wife Ai and the materials in the collection of the Art Museum of Kyoto City University of Arts are also referenced for this study. Being interested in ancient and modern art, Nakai and his wife based themselves in Paris and travelled to museums and ruins in London, Germany, Italy and Spain to see the actual works of art they were studying. Meanwhile, works by contemporary French artists they saw in Paris and the Exposition d'Art Japonais (Paris, 1922) helped them to reflect on the future of art in Japan, leading them to suggest referencing the spirit and development method of modern western art for creating Nihonga paintings. Upon returning to Japan, he focused on the common characteristics between western art and his study of Japanese art, resulting in his research discussing the value and creation of universal art that transcends the framework of both western and Japanese art
Google Arts & Culture 「Made in Japan : 日本の匠」 における京都女子大学と立命館大学の取り組みについて
Get PDFEstablished in 2011 by Google, the Google Cultural Institute (URL: g.co/artsandculture) is an epochmaking platform designed to more effectively diffuse the intellectual knowledge hitherto accumulated by these institutions with art and cultural collections around the world to the general public (the platform was renamed Google Arts & Culture in 2015). Made in Japan: Nihon no Takumi (URL: g.co/madeinjapan) was launched in January 2016 with the purpose of introducing traditional crafts from around Japan. Kyoto Women’s University and Ritsumeikan University played major roles in this project with other partners of the project such as NHK Educational, Tottori Prefecture, Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts and a few others. The initial purpose of “showing the other side of Japan’s traditions”. Besides showing the works created, we have also been showing behind the scenes in the making of crafts which would normally be unseen by the public. Many of the results from searches in the categories of pottery, lacquer, wood, bamboo, and paper on A&C are works by the Made in Japan project, making this project one of the largest on A&C showcasing crafts. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
