Achieving Smart Water Network Management Through Semantically Driven Cognitive Systems
Part 13: Semantics in Networks of Cognitive SystemsInternational audienceAchieving necessary resilience levels in urban water networks is a challenging proposition, with water network operators required to ensure a constant supply of treated water at pre-set pressure levels to a huge number of homes and businesses, all within strict budgetary restrictions. To achieve this, water network operators are required to overcome significant obstacles, including ageing assets within their infrastructure, the wide geographical area over which assets are spread, problematic internet connectivity in remote locations and a lack of interoperability between water network operator ICT systems. These issues act as key blockers for the deployment of smart water network management technologies such as optimisation, data driven modelling and dynamic water demand management. This paper presents how the use of a set cognitive analytic smart water components, underpinned by semantic modelling of the water network, can overcome these obstacles. The architecture and underpinning semantics of cognitive components are described along with how communication between these components is achieved. Two case studies are presented to demonstrate how the deployment of smart technologies can improve water network efficiency
A Virtual Collaborative Platform to Support Building Information Modeling Implementation for Energy Efficiency
Part 15: Collaborative Energy Services in Smart CitiesInternational audienceThere is increased interest in complying with the new regulations and policies associated with the climate change. In particular industries such as the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry seek to find new strategies and practices for facilitating sustainability but also new regulations to improve efficiency at the building level. Institutions and industrial bodies are now in the process of alignment with new legislative stipulations regarding carbon emissions with wider reflection into environment, social and economic models. At building level such strategies refer to decarbonisation and energy efficiency supported with data driven techniques enriched with virtual collaboration and optimization methods. The increased interest of the research community in Building Information Modeling (BIM) has facilitated numerous solutions ranging from digital products, information retrieval, and optimization techniques all aiming at addressing energy optimization and performance gap reduction. In this paper we present how a virtual collaborative system can be efficiently used for implementing BIM based energy optimization for controlling, monitoring buildings and running energy optimization, greatly contributing to creating a BIM construction community with energy practices. The solution described, known as energy-bim.com platform, disseminates energy efficient practices and community engagement and provides support for building managers in implementing energy efficient optimization plans
Cognitive Based Decision Support for Water Management and Catchment Regulation
Part 13: Semantics in Networks of Cognitive SystemsInternational audienceThe effect of climate change on water ecosystems include increased winter precipitation, severe floods, leading to fluctuations in stream flow in areas and affecting both fish survival and water supplies. Several methods exist for establishing projections of changes in precipitation with regards to river flows and water levels at the river-basin scale, but hydrological characteristics change remain difficult to predict. Ensuring optimization techniques for water systems becomes significantly important especially with the degradation of water ecosystems and increased risks for fish population. On the other hand, water demand has increased in the recent periods with the population growth. Further changes in the irrigation water system demand are determined by climate change precluding the reliability of current water management systems and affecting on the water-related ecosystems. To address these challenges real time water management and optimization strategies are required to facilitate a more autonomous management process that can address requirements for water demand, supply and ecosystem preservation. We present a cognitive based decision system that performs river level prediction for water optimization and catchment regulation for preserving Usk reservoir ecosystem in South Wales. The research is conducted on the Usk reservoir in South Wales reservation that is seeking to preserve the ecosystem and for which we propose a more informed decision system for catchment regulation and water management. Our system provides five days river level prediction to regulate river levels by pumping from/to reservoirs and to create artificial spates during the salmon migration season and to coincide with periods of low river flow
Integrated Framework to Manage Building’s Sustainability Efficiency, Design Features and Building Envelope
Part 18: Building Information ModelingInternational audienceThe construction industry is facing a challenge to move towards a more sustainable sector with energy-efficient buildings and sustainable design features. Building design and construction process are conditioned by numerous sustainability regulations and assessment measures. With the increasing use of building simulations, the potential of improving design features and promoting efficient construction has become a routine practice, starting at early stages of design and carried out throughout the life cycle of a building. Nevertheless, the construction process is currently lacking the presence of integrated systems that allow dynamic compliance checking of design features with building regulations using instant results from building simulation tools. Such integrated system requires access to regulatory compliance data and appropriate information exchange mechanism between building information model, regulatory requirements and building simulations tools. This paper will present an initiative for developing an integrated system that facilitates managing building performance dynamically through an appropriate information management process combining sustainability regulatory and building simulations with building information modeling. The paper will present a valid implementation results of compliance checking against some criteria of BREEAM assessment process. The quantitative analysis of the results revealed that more than 50% of compliance requirements cannot be fully automated and still requires users input. This is due to the fact that the IFC data model used for data extraction lacks a representation of certain domains of data
Smart grid futures: Perspectives on the integration of energy and ICT services
The entire electricity infrastructure and associated socio-technical system including transmission and distribution networks, the system operator, suppliers, generators, consumers and market mechanisms will need to evolve to realize the full potential of smart-grids. At the heart of this evolution is the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) and energy infrastructures for increasingly decentralized development, monitoring and management of a resilient grid. This paper identifies the challenges of integration and four key areas of future research and development at the intersection of energy and ICT: standards-based interoperability, reliability and security, decentralized and self-organizing grid architecture, and innovative business models to unlock the potential of the energy value chain. The ideas postulated here are envisaged to act as a starting-point for future RandD direction
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
