The later orchestral works of William Walton: a critical and analytical re-evaluation

Although the British twentieth-century composer William Walton enJoys a continuing presence in the international canon, the body of scholarship that seriously engages with his life and work is small. The post-war music, which includes the Cello Concerto (1956), Second Symphony (1961), Variations on a Theme of Hindemith (1963), Improvisations on an Impromptu of Benjamin Britten (1969), and the film score for Battle of Britain (1969), has been particularly underrepresented in critical and analytical writing. In this thesis, I give detailed analyses of these scores, alongside an investigation of the contemporary critical climate and reception history of these works. I argue that the series of significant lifestyle changes that Walton underwent in the years immediately following the Second World War - including exchanging the busy musical life of London and a series of affairs with high-profile figures for the 'dolce far niente' of an isolated Italian island and a stable marriage - are suggestive of a broad shift in the composer's social and cultural values with consequent changes in musical attitudes and compositional tendencies. Walton's later music is differentiated from the pre-war works by the presence of octatonic, twelve-note, hexatonic and other non-diatonic harmonic constructions in the foreground, and a change from teleological to network-based or rotational background structures. My analyses adopt a deliberately eclectic range of analytical strategies, combining aspects of set-class approaches alongside tools from the tonal tradition. This methodological pluralism reflects my argument that the vitality of these scores derives from a tension between modernist and traditional tendencies. I argue that Walton appropriates a wide range of influences, including to some extent that of the European avant garde, in contradistinction to the assertion prominent in contemporary reception literature that his music had stagnated into a single outmoded and rarefied style. I conclude that although Walton's post-war music was indeed conservative in comparison to that of several of his younger contemporaries, his music engages, through opposition and assimilation, with many of the most characteristic trends of twentieth-century concert music. Nevertheless, I argue that the temptation to label Walton as a 'modernist' should be avoided; his works should be judged on their own terms and not according to the regressive--progressive axis prominent in much of the contemporary reception literature. These scores may not have been progressive, but they have a distinctive sound-world and an invigorating vitality that makes them exceptionally engaging both as works of art and objects of study

The transformation of "Tam Lin" : an analysis of folktale picture books

The folktale picture book is rooted in a common folklore as well as literary and illustrative traditions. Scholarship indicates the necessity for evaluative criteria to be proposed for this unique genre which, subsequently, would assist writers, illustrators, critics and, due to their dependence on written retellings, storytellers. I group critical questions stemming from the adaptation a folktale to a folktale picture book into four categories. The first source acknowledgement, asks whether an author has credited folktale sources used when researching the retelling. The second, narrative features, examines changes made to a folktale's plot, characters and setting. The third, stylistic features, looks at the techniques by which a folktale works as an oral story and asks if the folktale picture book also lends itself to oral performance, preserves recurring symbols and images, and effectively uses diction. The final category, illustrative features, explores the ways in which an artist incorporates folklore into the pictures by means of mirroring the text, accurately presenting the culture, bringing additional layers of meaning to the story, and respecting the folkloric text's presence on the page. I apply these questions to four picture books which maintain dominant motifs found in nine versions of the ballad of "Tam Lin" collected by Sir Frances Child: "Tamlane" by Judy Paterson and Sally J. Collins, "The Enchanted Forest" by Rosalind Kervan and Alan Marks, Tarn Lin by Susan Cooper and Warwick Hutton, and "Tam Lin" by Jane Yolen and Charles Mikolaycak. This analysis leads me to conclude that, around a base of source materials, the narrative, stylistic and illustrative categories that form my evaluative framework converge to form a metaphorical triangle; a good folktale picture book must be constructed from these equally important foundations; serious deficiency in one area affects the structural integrity of the entire book. On a more personal level, this investigation has prompted me to re-examine my own work as an oral storyteller. My version of "Tam Lin," ever a work in progress, has been changed by this evaluative framework as well as my experience with the picture books themselves.Arts, Faculty ofLibrary, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS), School ofGraduat

How Does Processing Affect Storage in Working Memory Tasks? Evidence for Both Domain-General and Domain-Specific Effects

No full text
Two studies that examine whether the forgetting caused by the processing demands of working memory tasks is domain-general or domain-specific are presented. In each, separate groups of adult participants were asked to carry out either verbal or nonverbal operations on exactly the same processing materials while maintaining verbal storage items. The imposition of verbal processing tended to produce greater forgetting even though verbal processing operations took no longer to complete than did nonverbal processing operations. However, nonverbal processing did cause forgetting relative to baseline control conditions, and evidence from the timing of individuals' processing responses suggests that individuals in both processing groups slowed their responses in order to "refresh" the memoranda. Taken together the data suggest that processing has a domain-general effect on working memory performance by impeding refreshment of memoranda but can also cause effects that appear domain-specific and that result from either blocking of rehearsal or interference.</p

The author has granted permission for their work to be available to the general public. The institutions that train our future medical providers and healthcare specialists consider an anatomy course with cadaver dissection a necessary cornerstone of the educational process. Currently, there are those who are committed to this traditional teaching approach and those who seek to augment or replace the anatomy experience with hi-tech resources. The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the performance of a participant group (i.e., physician assistant students enrolled in a fully online anatomy course) against a nonequivalent comparison group (i.e., physician assistant students that completed a lecture-based class with a cadaver lab). In addition, following the completion of the online-only anatomy course, a Likert-scale survey instrument was used to determine the online students' comprehensive perception of their non-traditional experience within this study's two frameworks: technology acceptance and the multimodal model of online education. Regarding performance, the course delivery method yielded no significant difference on a standardized comprehensive anatomy exam between the participant and the nonequivalent groups. The Likert-scale assessment, within the TAM framework, demonstrated a conclusive connection between the participants and the technology. Additionally, the survey responses regarding instructors/teaching, learning experience, assessments, and overall satisfaction, revealed positive participant perceptions of the course core elements. In summary, the quantitative data – student performance on a comprehensive exam and Likert-scale survey results – reveal that online anatomy is an acceptable surrogate for face-to-face anatomy with a cadaveric component.Interdisciplinary Learning and Teachin

Duty of care and loyalty are among the general principles regulatedunder the provisions of the Turkish Commercial Code in relation to jointstock companies. But, who owes these duties and for whom they are owed isargumentative. The standard of care prescribed in the Turkish CommercialCode is also open for arguments. In addition, their application in the case ofcontrolled and controlling companies which is taken as an exception to thegeneral rule is exposed to divergent views. In this article, the author arguesthat members of the board of director, managers and any person who has orexercises managerial power owe duty of care and loyalty for the company, shareholders and third party creditors. The standard of care prescribed in theCode is also a slightly different version of the American Business JudgmentRule. And finally, there is a room for the application of the principles in thecontext of a fully controlled company. To reach these conclusions, the authoranalyzed Turkish laws and different secondary sources.Özen ve bağlılık yükümlülükleri, anonim şirketlerle ilgili olarak, TürkTicaret Kanununda düzenlenen genel ilkeler arasındadır. A New Form of Authoritarianism? Rethinking Military Politics in Post-1999 Nigeria

No full text
Despite the vast research that has been done on the Nigerian military, virtually all of these studies have failed to critically examine the accepted role of the military in the democratising phase. This is important because the relationship between the political elite and the military in post-military authoritarian states guarantees either democratic consolidation, or its reversal. In Nigeria, despite an appearance of significant progress in subordinating the military institution to democratic civilian authority, the military remains a crucial political actor in the polity. It appears that the military has yet to accept the core democratic principles of civilian oversight of the institution. This thesis, therefore, explores whether a new form of military authoritarianism is emerging in Nigeria, with the aim of understanding Nigeria’s military behaviour in a transitional phase, from prolonged military authoritarianism to democratisation. To examine this military behaviour, Alfred Stepan’s concept of military prerogatives that was used to understand the military’s behaviour in a transitional phase in Latin America is applied to Nigeria. A crucial understanding of authoritarianism in Nigeria is initially discussed in this study using mainly document analysis strategy to examine whether multi-ethnic states, such as Nigeria, tend to have authoritarian systems. Six hypotheses form the core analysis of this thesis: first, that the military has retained significant military prerogatives; second, that retired military officers are gaining influential political and economic positions; third, autonomous military involvement in human rights abuses since 1999; and fourth, that civilian government oversight remains weak, and facilitates military authoritarianism. These hypotheses are primarily analysed using the elite interview technique. During the first half of 2011, the author conducted field research where serving and retired military officers were interviewed. The fifth hypothesis is that the military has intervened in politics post-1999. The examination of this hypothesis relies primarily on key security-related media reports (mostly newspaper editorials) on the military after 1999. The examination of the final hypothesis, that increases in military expenditures might facilitate a new form of military authoritarianism, relies primarily on descriptive statistical analysis. In addition, this study collated relevant historical materials that relate to the military, utilising national archival collections. The empirical findings of this research did not identify a new form of military authoritarianism in Nigeria. The study, however, argues that the unrestricted institutional framework accorded the military has contributed significantly to authoritarian practices in the post-military era in Nigeria. This study discovered that there were similarities between the Brazilian and Nigerian militaries in regard to their military spending during their period in power. Both countries had lower defence budgets. Just as in Brazil, it appears that part of the reason the Nigerian military decided to relinquish power in 1999 had to do with its desire to gain a higher budget, something that was precluded in a military government struggling to retain a sense of legitimacy. The military needed a higher budget to modernise and re-professionalise its institution after more than a decade in power. This feature, which the Nigerian military shares with the Brazilian military, appears to justify the application to Nigeria of Alfred Stepan’s concept of military prerogatives.
