Adaptive Bayesian Space-Time Equalisation for Multiple Receive-Antenna Assisted Single-Input Multiple-Output Systems

    No full text
This contribution considers nonlinear space–time equalisation (STE) for multiple receive-antenna induced single-input multipleoutput (SIMO) systems. By exploiting the inherent symmetry of the underlying optimal Bayesian STE solution, a novel symmetric radial basis function (RBF) based STE scheme is proposed, which is capable of approaching the optimal Bayesian equalisation performance. Adaptive implementation of this symmetric RBF (SRBF) based STE can be achieved conveniently by estimating the SIMO channels using the least mean square channel estimator and computing the optimal RBF centres from the resulting SIMO channel matrix estimate. Simulation results also demonstrate that the performance of this SRBF based STE is robust with respect to the choice of the RBF variance value. The proposed adaptive solution is then extended to the space–time decision feedback equalisation (ST-DFE) structure

Error resilient techniques for storage elements of low power design

Over two decades of research has led to numerous low-power design techniques being reported. Two popular techniques are supply voltage scaling and power gating. This thesis studies the impact of these two design techniques on the reliability of embedded processor registers and memory systems in the presence of transient faults; and with the aim to develop and validate efficient mitigation techniques to improve reliability with small cost of energy consumption, performance and area overhead. This thesis presents three original contributions. The first contribution presents a technique for improving the reliability of embedded processors. A key feature of the technique is low cost, which is achieved through reuse of the scan chain for state monitoring, and it is effective because it can correct single and multiple bit errors through hardware and software respectively. To validate the technique, ARMR Cortex TM -M0 embedded microprocessor is implemented in FPGA and further synthesised using 65-nm technology to quantify the cost in terms of area, latency and energy. It is shown that the presented technique has a small area overhead (8.6%) with less than 4% worst-case increase in critical path. The second contribution demonstrates that state integrity of flip-flops is sensitive to process, voltage and temperature (PVT) variation through measurements from 82 test chips. A PVT-aware state protection technique is presented to ensure state integrity of flip-flops while achieving maximum leakage savings. The technique consists of characterisation algorithm and employs horizontal and vertical parity for error detection and correction. Silicon results show that flip-flops state integrity is preserved while achieving up to 17.6% reduction in retention voltage across 82-dies. Embedded processors memory systems are susceptible to transient errors and blanket protection of every part of memory system through ECC is not cost effective. The final contribution addresses the reliability of embedded processor memory systems and describes an architectural simulation-based framework for joint optimisation of reliability, energy consumption and performance. Accurate estimation of memory reliability with targeted protection is proposed to identify and protect the most vulnerable part of the memory system to minimise protection cost. Furthermore, L1-cache resizing together with voltage and frequency scaling is proposed for further energy savings while maintaining performance and reliability. The contributions presented are supported by detailed analyses using state-of-the-art design automation tools, in-house software tools and validated using FPGA and silicon implementation of commercial low power embedded processor

An efficient predistorter design for compensating nonlinear memory high power amplifier

    No full text
This contribution applies digital predistorter to compensate distortions caused by memory high power amplifiers (HPAs) which exhibit true output saturation characteristics. Particle swarm optimization is first implemented to identify the Wiener HPA’s parameters. The estimated Wiener HPA model is then directly used to design the predistorter. The proposed digital predistorter solution is attractive owing to its low on-line computational complexity, small memory units required and simple VLSI hardware structure implementation. Moreover, the designed predistorter is capable of successfully compensating serious nonlinear distortions and memory effects caused by the memory HPA operating in the output saturation region. Simulation results obtained are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this novel digital predistorter design

"Yi zhuan" "sheng sheng" si xiang yan jiu =: On the Idea of shengsheng in the commentaries of Yi

    No full text
Ph.D.The thesis aims to investigate the idea of Shengsheng (continuous creation) in the Commentaries of Yi and its development in the history of Confucian philosophy. The investigation consists of four parts. The first part starts by discussing the literal meaning of the character Sheng in the oracle bone script and the Chinese bronze inscriptions. It then examines the idea of Shengsheng in the ancient Chinese classics, especially its textual context in the Commentaries of Yi . Accordingly, we will answer the following questions one by one: What is Shengsheng ? How can it actualize? How is the idea adopted by other Pre Qin thoughts? The second part focuses on the understanding of the idea in Han Confucianism. It takes Zhouyi Qianzhaodu and the Zheng Xuan interpretation as illustrative examples. Here we see how another idea Qi has been introduced to interpret Sheng sheng as the origin and process of actualization in both the natural world and human community. The third part moves to the development of the idea in Northern Song Confucianism and explores how the Confucian scholars at that time further elaborated the idea as an essential of moral metaphysics. The final part studies the thought of Xiong Shili to show how Xiong draws from Buddhism and Confucian philosophy to develop a critical inquiry into the idea and hence argues its modern relevance. Parallel title from added title page.Thesis Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2019.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 334-340).Abstracts in Chinese and English.Title from PDF title page (viewed on February 23, 2022).Dou Chenguang

A Study of Chin Sheng-Tan\ue2s Hermeneutics on Du Fu's Poetics

    No full text
The thesis mainly discusses the hermeneutic system on Du Fu\ue2s poetics, which was established after close analysis of Du Fu\ue2s poetry by a literary critic Chin Sheng-Tang (the end of the Ming and beginning of the Qing dynasties).Among all Tang poets Chin Sheng-Tang admired Du Fu the most for his poetics of seven line stanzas, which was viewed by Chin Sheng-Tang as an epitome of high aesthetical value and poetical canon. The critic proposed a method of decompositional analysis for studying Du Fu\ue2s poetry: he saw the interconnection between the title of the poem and it\ue2s content, and then decomposed the poem into small pieces, conducting close reading, so that the poem was seen as having three level structure from bigger to smaller \ue2the level of passages, sentences and characters\ue2. First, we start with looking at \ue2other interpretation\ue2 from the describing trend of hermeneutics on Du Fu\ue2s poetics prevailing during that period of time, pointing out what was the main opinion of the literary critics, and comparing it with the one of Chin Sheng-Tang\ue2s, and looking at his status among the circles of literary critics. Then we discuss the Chin Sheng-Tang \ue2s \ue2self interpretation\ue2 , explaining what kind of reader and critic he was. After that we provide the review of poetry reading methods and horizon in literary criticism, explaining how to use the method in literary analysis. After Chin Sheng-Tang\ue2s method of literary criticism becomes clear to us, we look how his caesura method is used to analyze structure of Du Fu\ue2s poetry. Through the caesura analysis we use reader\ue2s, author\ue2s and literary works point of view to find out whether this method is appropriate and whether it can reveal the spirit of that age or is it simply an over-reading. In the end we provide the conclusion about the effectiveness of the hermeneutic system, proposed by Chin Sheng-Tang
