A Chronology of International Business Cycles Through Non-parametric Decoding

    No full text
This paper introduces a new empirical strategy for the characterization of business cycles. It combines non-parametric decoding methods that classify a series into expansions and recessions but does not require specification of the underlying stochastic process generating the data. It then uses network analysis to combine the signals obtained from different economic indicators to generate a unique chronology. These methods generate a record of peak and trough dates comparable, and in one sense superior, to the NBER’s own chronology. The methods are then applied to 22 OECD countries to obtain a global business cycle chronology.decoding, hierarchical factor segmentation, network analysis, business cycles

The specter in search of lost work: Marxism and deconstruction

The ghost of “the end of work” is one of the main threats that haunts contemporary liberal democracies. From the perspective that claims the production of unemployment as a promotion of social darwinism or its opposite critique of the irreconcilable antagonism between the real economy and the financial markets, the medias´s doxa announces the imminent lost of an expired form of life. But do we know what work and unemployment are? We are looking for an answer to these fundamental questions from the marxist tradition to the deconstructive thought, by preparing to welcome the spectre that always dwells between two. This ghost puts in doubt the limit that builds the opposition between work and unemployment and, at the same time, blows up the proper unity that positions itself in both sides of the border.Fil: Chun, Sebastián. Assessment on Author Contribution in Publication: A Tool for Decision-makers

    No full text
AbstractIn this paper, an assessment model that incorporated with fuzzy preference relations is proposed to assess the contribution of each author that is involved in publication work. A case study is conducted to demonstrate the ability of the proposed methodology in distinguishing and reflecting the actual contribution of individual author through peer assessment. Results revealed the fuzzy preference relations are capable to provide indices to reflect authors’ contribution in a team, and subsequently rate them accordingly with appropriate individual mark. The mark for authors in a team is computed by their associated individual contribution factor scores and the journal rank mark set by the university. The methodology can be further deployed as a standardized method to quantify co-authors’ contributions in multi-author papers, and subsequently become a supplement evaluation tool for the university's decision maker to grade or reward the authors
