The outlook for the metropolitan area

The author assesses the region's future and identifies policies that might improve the local outlook. He acknowledges that substantial cuts in the local tax burden could increase growth but doubts whether local governments could afford such widespread reductions. Instead, he argues, it would be more beneficial for authorities to seek ways to lower the cost of doing business in the region, possibly by reducing taxes levied on intermediate goods and services purchased by businesses.New York (N.Y.) ; Federal Reserve District, 2nd

Clinical commentary by Antje Netzer-Stein, child and adolescent psychotherapist and psychoanalyst

The author reflects on the case of a 16-year-old girl with psychosomatic symptoms and underwent psychotherapy and specifically teenagers' tendency to struggle between regressive tendencies and be more independent. A background of the girl is provided who is an only child of separated parents and suffered several traumatic separations as a child. Also examined are the mental health of her mother and the dynamics between mother and daughter

Defining the heterochromatin localization and repression domains of SALL1

    No full text
AbstractSALL1 has been identified as one of four human homologues of the Drosophila region-specific homeotic gene spalt (sal), encoding zinc finger proteins of characteristic structure. Mutations of SALL1 on chromosome 16q12.1 cause Townes–Brocks syndrome (TBS, OMIM 107480). We have shown previously that SALL1 acts as a strong transcriptional repressor in mammalian cells when fused to a heterologous DNA-binding domain. Here, we report that SALL1 contains two repression domains, one located at the extreme N-terminus of the protein and the other in the central region. SALL1 fragments with the central repression domain exhibited a punctate nuclear distribution pattern at pericentromeric heterochromatin foci in murine NIH-3T3 cells, suggesting an association between repression and heterochromatin localization. The implications of these findings for the pathogenesis of Townes–Brocks syndrome are discussed

    Abdominaler schmerz

English title: Abdominal pain . = Abdominal pain can result from a variety of different intra- and extra-abdominal disorders. Given the wide variety of etiological triggers for this pain, the primary task during the first stage of the diagnostic work-up is to determine as soon as possible the underlying cause and the degree of emergency. The aim of this evaluation is to adapt the therapeutic measures which are necessary for a causal treatment to the individual situation. Contrary to somatic causes of abdominal pain, the availability of such a causal therapy for functional bowel disorders is still very limited. Given this dilemma, the therapeutic focus of abdominal pain associated with these functional syndromes has to be placed on symptom-oriented treatment.J. M. Gschossmann, G. Holtmann, P. Netzer, M. Tell me who your brands are and I will tell you who you vote for

Past research increasingly highlights opportunities to learn about consumers’ attitudes and behavior from publicaly available social media data sources (e.g., Netzer et al. 2012; Culotta and Cutler 2016). In line with this evolving research stream, we show how information regarding the followers of brands and politicians on Twitter can be used to learn about the associations between politicians and brands. More specifically, we investigate which brands the followers of major politicians (e.g., Donald Trump, Hilary Clinton, Bernie Sanders) and political parties (e.g., Democratic Party and GOP) follow in order to identify the political position of each brand. Building on this we then show how this information relates to predictions of people’s voting behavior based on their brand preferences and contrast with conventional demographic predictors. Finally, we relate the brand-politician associations to brand image data using Y&R Brand Asset Valuator and show how the proximity of brands and politicians based on social networking data relates to the characteristics of the brands

Ampelographic and genetic characterization of an initial Israeli grapevine germplasm collection

The Holy Land has a long history of winemaking, widely mentioned in ancient scripts. The Muslim occupation of this region, starting in the 7th century initiated a wine consumption prohibition, resulting in the abandonment of most wine varieties. The renewing of Israeli wine industry in the 19th century was based on international cultivars. Between the years 2011-2014 we conducted a country-wide survey towards the collection and assessment of an Israeli grapevine germplasm collection, including for the first time Vitis vinifera L. subsp. sylvestris (Gmelin) Hegi accessions. The collected population consists of 148 accessions which revealed 61 different genetic profiles when analysed at 9 SSR loci. Ten genotypes consistently matched the profiles of some Israeli and Palestinian accessions reported in previous studies. The phylogenetic analysis showed how the V. vinifera subsp. sylvestris accessions, all collected in the north of Israel around water sources, are well distinguished from the V. vinifera subsp. sativa group. Based on ampelographic evaluation we concluded that most V. vinifera L. subsp. sativa accessions have characteristics of the proles Orientalis. We believe that by our efforts of collecting and assessing these populations, an array of new-old grapevine varieties suited for quality wine production would be offered, reconnecting the Israeli wine industry to its historical origin

Competitive Screening in Insurance Markets with Endogenous Labor Supply

    Get PDF
We examine equilibria in competitive insurance markets when individuals take unobservable labor supply decisions. Precautionary labor motives intro-duce countervailing incentives in the insurance market, and equilibria with positive profits can occur even in the standard case in which individuals exogenously differ in risk only. We then extend the model to allow for both privately known risks and labor productivities. This endogenously introduces two-dimensional heterogeneity in the insurance market since precautionary labor effects lead to differences in income and hence risk aversion. Under these circumstances, separating and pooling equilibria exist, which generally differ from those with exogenous two-dimensional heterogeneity considered by the existing literature. Notably, in contrast to standard screening models, profits may be increasing with insurance coverage, and the correlation between risk and coverage can be zero or negative in equilibrium, a phenomenon frequently observed in empirical studies.Insurance markets, adverse selection, precautionary labor
