After a brief introduction tracking Petrarch’s fortune in Russia, the author describes the situation in the two thousand and focuses on the translation of Petrarch’s Canzoniere made by Aleksey Berdnikov and published in 2017 to explain why, in spite of translator’s talent and masterful command in poetical techniques, it passed without public and critical interest. Berdnikov’s translation, being mostly realized in the mid of the 1980-s as a piece of underground literature, is based on the language of the late soviet period with its different stylistic strata and cultural references. Interpreted with postmodernist irony and a certain ludic spirit, Berdnikov’s Petrarch looks odd and in many aspects inconceivable to the modern reader who is different from that of the soviet period. As a possible way of translating classics, Berdnikov’s experience showed its dependency on the cultural and linguistic nuances of a certain period and its historical shortness

Topics in strongly correlated electrons
The thesis is a collection of three topics connected together by the common themes of strong interactions, magnetism and quantum phases, such as the Aharonov-Bohm or Berry phase.
The first part of the present dissertation discusses the possibility of examining microscopic origins of magnetism in strongly interacting systems by exploiting the setting of ultra-cold atomic gases in optical lattices. We discuss signatures of correlation in the trap, and propose an experiment to measure the phase diagram of itinerant magnetism directly.
The second part focuses on the exotic phase of matter exhibiting the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect, which emerges when interacting particles are placed in a very strong magnetic field. We propose a trial ground state wave-function and prove that it is the unique highest density ground state of a well-motivated pseudo-potential Hamiltonian. The exchange statistics of quasiparticles are shown to be exotic, and overlaps with results of exact diagonalization are
also discussed.
The final part of the thesis studies frustrated magnetic systems, in which competing forces cannot not be satisfied simultaneously, doped with electrons. The interplay of frustration and itinerant behavior generates Berry phases associated with charge transport. We study the effects of these phases on electronic behavior, as well as the effect electrons have on the underlying
magnetic textures. In the quasi-classical limit, we conjecture a field-driven metal-insulator transition, and discuss persistent currents arising in ground states selected by the presence of charge. In the quantum regime we derive the full Hamiltonian and discuss small fluctuations about the classical results.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references.by Ilya Berdniko
In his final year project, «Key Concepts in English Lullabies», Pavel Berdnikov studies and systemizes the concepts found in English lullabies. He takes a look at the existing approaches to the notion of concept and the definitions of the term suggested by scientists in different branches of linguistics, and studies the structure of concept and the major methods used by the scientists while working with concepts. After a multi-level analysis of 55 English lullabies, the author created a classification of the key concepts that he had encountered, and described the impact of lullabies on the modern culture
Length distributions of Au-catalyzed and In-catalyzed InAs nanowires
We present experimental data on the length distributions of InAs nanowires grown by chemical beam epitaxy with Au catalyst nanoparticles obtained by thermal dewetting of Au film, Au colloidal nanoparticles and In droplets. Poissonian length distributions are observed in the first case. Au colloidal nanoparticles produce broader and asymmetric length distributions of InAs nanowires. However, the distributions can be strongly narrowed by removing the high temperature annealing step. The length distributions for the In-catalyzed growth are instead very broad. We develop a generic model that is capable of describing the observed behaviors by accounting for both the incubation time for nanowire growth and secondary nucleation of In droplets. These results allow us to formulate some general recipes for obtaining more uniform length distributions of III-V nanowires
Three Achilles’ heels of alcohol septal ablation

This manuscript looks at basic limitations of alcohol septal ablation in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. They include high-grade atrioventricular blockages, residual obstructions of the left ventricular outflow tract and the so-called proarrhythmic effects of alcohol septal ablation procedure. All these weaknesses are reviewed in the context of incidence, etiology, and prevention.

Received 25 February 2017. Reactions of dichlorocarbene and arenesulfenyl chlorides with 3,4-epoxy-1-butene and vinylethylene carbonate
Reaction of 3,4-epoxy-1-butene with dichlorocarbene is accompanied by deoxygenation and yields a mixture of 1,1-dichloro-2-vinylcyclopropane, 2,2,2',2'-tetrachlorobicyclopropyl, and 2,2-dichlorocyclopropyloxirane. Arenesulfenyl chlorides react with 3,4-epoxy-1-butene to afford both Markownikoff and anti-Markownikoff addition products, whereas vinylethylene carbonate gives rise exclusively to the anti-Markownikoff adducts
