Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Igarapé do Leão, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil.</p> <p> <b>Bionomics</b>. Immature stages of this species occur mainly in tree holes but can also be found in other phytotelmata, such as epiphytic bromeliads and traveller’s palms (<i>Phenakospermum</i>, Strelitziaceae). Females were collected landing on humans in forest during the daytime (08:00‒15:00) (Cerqueira 1961).</p> <p> <b>Arbovirus infection records</b>. None.</p> <p> <b>Occurrence in Brazil</b>. The immature stages of this species have been collected in sapucaia nut oviposition traps (Vieira <i>et al</i>. 2020). Larvae of <i>Sa</i>. <i>gymnothorax</i> were observed preying on <i>Haemagogus</i> larvae in the laboratory, where larval development lasted 4‒5 weeks at 25°C (Harbach & Pertensen 1992).</p> <p> <b>Arbovirus infection records</b>. Immature stages of this species develop in bamboo internodes, usually with small holes produced by beetles or other animals (Harbach 1994). The species was found at an altitude of 1,032 m in the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil (Anjos & Navarro-Silva 2008).</p> <p> <b>Arbovirus infection records</b>. None.</p> <p> <b>Occurrence in Brazil</b>. State of Paraná (Anjos & Navarro-Silva 2008).</p> <p> <b>Occurrence in other countries</b>.
