    Supplemental Information for: Fundamental Science and Engineering Questions in Planetary Cave Exploration

    This dataset consists of two files: an MS Word document and an MS Excel worksheet. The Word document, "Supplemental_Information_TextS1-S3_Tablecaptions_Wynne_etal2022.docx" is comprised of the three sets of survey questions, Surveys 1, 2, and 3 (Text S1 through S3). These questions were the basis for the social surveys in the horizon scan; the file also contains table captions for the Excel Spreadsheet (Table S1 through S5). The second file is an MS Excel spreadsheet, "Supplemental_Information_TablesS1-S5_Wynne_etal2022.xlsx", contains summary statistics and rank ordering for the combined Survey 2 and 3 results (Table S1), the top 53 fundamental questions in planetary cave science and engineering (Table S2), and survey results for Surveys 1, 2, and 3 (Table S3, S4, and S5, respectively). As per our agreement with Survey 2 participants (i.e., the broader scientific and engineering communities), names and email addresses of respondents were withheld to ensure their anonymity

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
