Black hole mass and accretion rate of active galactic nuclei with double-peaked broad emission lines
Using an empirical relation between the broad-line region size and optical continuum luminosity, we estimated the black hole mass and accretion rate for 135 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with double-peaked broad emission lines in two samples, one from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the other from a survey of radio-loud broad emission line AGNs. With black hole masses ranging from 3 x 10(7) M-circle dot to 5 x 10(9) M-circle dot, these AGNs have dimensionless accretion rates (Eddington ratios) between 0.001 and 0.1 and bolometric luminosity between 10(43) and 10(46) ergs s(-1), both values being significantly larger than those of several previously known low-luminosity (L-bol < 10(43) ergs s(-1)) double-peaked AGNs. The optical-X-ray spectra indices, &alpha;(OX), of these high-luminosity double-peaked AGNs are between 1 and 1.9, systematically larger than those of low-luminosity objects, which are around 1. Modest correlations ( with a Spearman rank correlation coefficient of 0.60) of the &alpha;(OX) value with the Eddington ratio and bolometric luminosity have been found, indicating that double-peaked AGNs with higher Eddington ratios or higher luminosity tend to have larger &alpha;(OX) values. Based on these results, we suggested that the accretion process in the central region of some high-luminosity double-peaked emission line AGNs ( especially those with Eddington ratios larger than 0.01) is probably different from that of low-luminosity objects, in which a well-known ADAF-like accretion flow was thought to exist. It is likely that the accretion physics in some high-luminosity double-peaked AGNs is similar to that in normal type 1 AGNs, which is also supported by the presence of possible big blue bumps in the spectra of some double-peaked AGNs with higher Eddington ratios. We note that the prototype double-peaked emission line AGN, Arp 102B, which has a black hole mass of 10(8) M-&ODOT; and a dimensionless accretion rate of 0.001, may be an "intermediate'' object between the high- and low-luminosity double-peaked AGNs. In addition, we found an apparent strong anticorrelation ( with a Spearman rank correlation coefficient of -0.79) between the peak separation of double-peaked profiles and Eddington ratios. However, such an anticorrelation is probably induced by a strong correlation between the peak separation and emission-line widths and needs to be confirmed by future work. If it is real, it may provide us another clue to understanding why double-peaked broad emission lines were hardly found in luminous AGNs with Eddington ratios larger than 0.1.Astronomy & AstrophysicsSCI(E)0ARTICLE191-10061
Accretion disk oscillations and QPOS in X-ray binaries
The observed quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in neutron star and black hole X-ray binaries have been suggested to be probably related to the oscillation modes in a relativistic accretion disk. Here we studied the non-damping feature of some oscillation modes by considering the radial perturbations and viscosity effects. We found that the non-damping fundamental modes can be amplified significantly in the inner disk when the viscosity parameter increases. Three of these non-damping modes are trapped in the inner disk and their trapping sizes depend on the radial wavenumber. Mach number and the spin of the central object. Some observed properties of kilohertz QPOs in neutron star X-ray binaries and hundred-hertz QPOs in black hole X-ray binaries may be explained by these trapped non-damping oscillation modes.Astronomy & AstrophysicsCPCI-S(ISTP)
Testing the transition layer model of quasi-periodic oscillations in neutron star X-ray binaries
We compare the theoretical predictions of the transition layer model with some observational features of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in neutron star X-ray binaries. We found that the correlation between horizontal branch oscillation (HBO) frequencies and kilohertz (kHz) QPO frequencies, the difference between the low-frequency QPOs in atoll sources and HBOs in Z sources, and the correlation between the frequencies of low-frequency QPOs and break frequencies can be well explained by the transition layer model, provided the neutron star mass is around 1.4 M-. and the angle between magnetosphere equator and accretion disk plane is around 6 degrees. The observed decrease of peak separation between the two kHz QPO frequencies with the increase of the kHz QPO frequencies and the increase of QPO frequencies with the increase of inferred mass accretion rate are also consistent with the theoretical predictions of the transition layer model. In addition, we derive a simple equation that can be adopted to estimate the angle (delta) between magnetosphere equator and accretion disk plane by use of the simultaneously observed QPO frequency data. We estimate this angle, in the range of 4 degrees -8 degrees, for five Z sources and two atoll sources. The nearly constant delta value for each source, derived from the different sets of simultaneously observed QPO frequency data, provides a strong test of the theoretical model. Finally, we suggest that similar transition layer oscillations may be responsible for the observed QPOs in accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars and Galactic black hole candidates.Astronomy & AstrophysicsSCI(E)3ARTICLE1227-23455
Color-redshift relations and photometric redshift estimations of quasars in large sky surveys
With a recently constructed composite quasar spectrum and the chi(2) minimization technique, we describe a general method for estimating the photometric redshifts of a large sample of quasars by deriving theoretical color-redshift relations and comparing the theoretical colors with the observed ones. We estimated the photometric redshifts from the 5-band SDSS photometric data of 18678 quasars in the first major data release of SDSS and compared them with their spectroscopic redshifts. The difference is less than 0.1 for 47% of the quasars and less than 0.2 for 68%. Based on the calculation of the theoretical color-color diagrams of stars, galaxies and quasars both on the SDSS system and on the BATC system, we expect that we would be able to select candidates of high redshift quasars more efficaciously with the latter than with the former, provided the BATC survey can detect objects with magnitudes fainter than 21.Astronomy & AstrophysicsSCI(E)中国科学引文数据库(CSCD)15ARTICLE117-27
Inclinations and black hole masses of Seyfert 1 galaxies
A tight correlation between black hole mass (M-BH) and central velocity dispersion (sigma) has been found recently for both active and quiescent galaxies. By applying this correlation, we develop a simple method to derive the inclination angles for a sample of 11 Seyfert 1 galaxies that have both measured central velocity dispersions and black hole masses estimated by reverberation mapping. These angles, with a mean value of 36 degrees that agrees well with the result obtained by fitting the iron K alpha lines of Seyfert 1 galaxies observed with ASCA, provide further support to the orientation-dependent unification scheme of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). A positive correlation of the inclinations with observed FWHMs of the H beta line and a possible anticorrelation with the nuclear radio loudness have been found. We conclude that more accurate knowledge of inclinations and broad-line region dynamics is needed to improve the black hole mass determination of AGNs with the reverberation mapping technique.Astronomy & AstrophysicsSCI(E)37ARTICLE1L59-L6256
On black hole masses, radio-loudness and bulge luminosities of Seyfert galaxies
We estimated black hole masses for 9 Seyfert 1 and 13 Seyfert 2 galaxies in the Palomar and CfA bright Seyfert samples using the tight correlation between black hole mass and bulge velocity dispersion. Combining other 13 Seyfert 1s and 2 Seyfert 2s in these samples but with black hole masses measured recently by reverberation mapping and stellar/gas dynamics, we studied the correlations of black hole masses with radio-loudness and bulge luminosities for a sample of 37 Seyfert galaxies. We found that if radio-loudness is measured using the optical and radio luminosities of the nuclear components, the black hole masses of radio-loud Seyfert 1s tend to increase with the radio-loudness. The black hole masses of all Seyfert galaxies increase with the radio power, but Seyfert galaxies have larger radio powers than nearby galaxies with the same black hole masses. In addition, the correlation between black hole masses and bulge V-band luminosities for Seyfert galaxies is consistent with that found for quasars and normal galaxies. The combined sample of 37 Seyfert galaxies, 15 quasars and 30 normal galaxies suggests a possible universal nonlinear relation between black hole and bulge masses, M-BH proportional to M-bulge(1.74 +/-0.14), which is slightly steeper than that found recently by Laor (2001) for a smaller sample. This nonlinear relation is supported by a larger sample including 65 Seyfert galaxies. The different M-BH=M-bulge ratio for galaxies with different bulge luminosities or different black hole masses may be explained by this relation. These results are consistent with some theoretical implications and are important for understanding the nature of radio emissions and the formation and evolution of supermassive black holes and galaxies.Astronomy & AstrophysicsSCI(E)EI20ARTICLE131-3938
Trapped disk oscillations and stable QPOs in microquasars
The observed quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in low-mass X-ray binaries have been suggested to be probably related to the characteristic oscillation modes in the inner part of a relativistic accretion disk. In this paper we study the trapped feature of these oscillation modes by considering the radial perturbations and viscosity effects. We find that the trapped oscillations are amplified significantly when the viscosity parameter increases and the trapped size varies when the radial wavenumber and Mach number change. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
