    Multi-modal Biometrics Based Implicit Driver Identification System Using Multi-TF Images of ECG and EMG

    As security is emphasized inside and outside the vehicle, research on driver identification technology using bio-signals is being actively studied. The bio-signals acquired by the behavioral characteristics of the driver include artifacts generated according to the driving environment, which could potentially degrade the accuracy of the identification system. Existing driver identification systems either remove the normalization process of bio-signals in the preprocessing stage or use artifacts included in a single bio-signals, resulting in low identification accuracy. To solve these problems in a real situation, we propose a driver identification system that converts ECG and EMG signals obtained from different driving conditions into 2D spectrograms through multi-TF image and uses multi-stream CNN. The proposed system consists of a preprocessing phase of ECG and EMG signals, a multi-TF image conversion process, and a driver identification stage using a multi-stream-based CNN. Under all driving conditions, the driver identification system reached an average accuracy of 96.8% and an F1 score of 0.973, which overperformed the existing driver identification systems by more than 1%

    Vertical greening in compact cities applying vertical landscape in downtown Chicago with integrated analysis and design approaches

    Compact cities as the globally norm are suffering green space insufficiency. Vertical greening (VG) including a green roof, living wall system and green façade is proposed as an effective solution for that. Benefits of VG are well-known, however, the success rate for its application is still low. To improve VG’s viability, plants selection, as one of the critical components of VG’s success, is mainly focused in this research—there are nine criteria proposed for plants suitability. Downtown Chicago is served as a pilot site in this research to apply VG. After the calculation for more suitable sites in downtown Chicago, three prototypes were proposed based on the building’s attributes, major users and common expectations. Planting fee information for each prototype has been provided at the same time.     Selles töös on üle vaadatud Karl August Hermanni 1895. aastal ilmunud artikkel, milles ta võrdles mandariinihiina keelt uurali keeltega, eriti eesti ja soome keelega, ning järeldas, et need keeled on omavahel suguluses. Hermanni toodud tõendid fonoloogia, morfoloogia ja süntaksi alal on mitmesugused. Hermanni leitud mõistete sarnasused on originaalsed. Selle töö autori hinnangul on Hermanni töös välja toodud kaheksast etümoloogilisest võrdlusest viis kehtivad, üks kahtlane, kaks kehtetud. Autor on täiendanud kehtivaid võrdlusi ja parandanud kehtetuid võrdlusi. Nende etümoloogiliste võrdluste tõestamiseks on välja toonud veel 12 etümoloogilist võrdlust, mille loovad kas sõnaalguline või riimivastavus. Tulemusena on esitatud kokku 19 hiinauurali etümoloogiat. Abstract. Jingyi Gao: Karl August Hermann’s Chinese-Finnish-Estonian language comparison, valid and invalid etymologies with corrections. The present study inspects Karl August Hermann’s article published in 1895, in which he compared Mandarin Chinese to Uralic languages, especially to Finnish and Estonian, and concluded that these languages are related. His proofs of phonology, morphology, and syntax domains are various. His findings of conception similarities are original. The present author estimates that of Hermann’s eight etymological comparisons, five are valid, one is doubtful, two are invalid. The author has amended the valid comparisons and corrected invalid comparisons. In order to verify these comparisons, further 12 etymological comparisons are given, which form onset or rhyme correspondences. As a result, a total of 19 Sino-Uralic etymologies are given

    Effects of oil types and beta-carotene in repeated deep-fat frying of French fries

    Deep-fat fried food is popular for its unique and desirable characteristics. In this study, the effects of deep-fat frying on oil deterioration were analyzed for soybean oil, palm olein and palm stearin. Frying performances were studied through 100 cycles of intermittent frying of French fries without replenishment of oils. Color changes were noticeable with increased frying time. Peroxide value was unstable and fluctuated over time. The p-Anisidine value increased fastest for soybean oil, with a final value of 190.84 at 100 cycles. With respect to the content of total polar compounds, the stability of the oils decreased in the order of palm stearin > soybean oil = palm olein at 100 cycles. Heated control oils showed much lower content of free fatty acids than fried oils with French fries. Palm stearin showed highest oxidative stability in p-Anisidine value and total polar compounds, however, the solidification of oils on the food surface during cooling make it unsuitable for practical use. Oil type was observed to have a significant effect on the changes of principal physicochemical parameters during repeated deep-fat frying. One of the characteristic features of palm oil is its high content of carotenoids. This prompted the study of the effect of β-carotene as an antioxidant in deep-fat frying. β-carotene was added to palm olein at a concentration equivalent to the total carotenoids in crude palm oil. With respect to p-Anisidine value, the antioxidant contribution of carotenoids was negligible under high temperature, as no significant difference was observed between palm olein containing β-carotene and the one without.     Wang Yinzhi "Jing yi shu wen" tan wei =: A detailed study of Wang Yinzhi’s Jingyi shuwen

    M.Phil.Wang Yinzhi (王引之1766-1834) and his father Wang Niansun (王念孫1744-1832), known as the “Gaoyou Two Wangs”, are eminent scholars studying on Classical Chinese textual collation and exegesis in Qing dynasty. The most remarkable works of Wang Niansun are Gwangya shuzheng(廣雅疏證) and Dushu Zazhi(讀書雜志), while Wang Yinzhi are Jingyi Shuwen(經義述聞) and Jingzhuan Shici(經傳釋詞). All through the years, scholars mainly focused on Wang Niansun’s work, while Wang Yinzhi has been overshadowed by his father’s achievement. Recently, researches started to shed light on Yinzhi’s work by comparing the interpretation on ancient text between Two Wangs but indeed, the related field is not yet fully explored. On this basis, this thesis attempts to make in-depth analysis on Yinzhi’s academic features through Jingyi Shuwen by observing three perspectives including the study of Zhouyi(周易), ancient astronomical calendar and function word which, Yinzhi has obtained greater development than his father.This thesis is divided into five chapters, the first chapter introduces the significance, scope, methodology and previous studies of this thesis. Chapter two systemizes Yinzhi’s research of Zhouyi by investigating how he uses texts and commentaries intertextually to explain hexagrams, how he criticizes Yi-ology of Han dynasty and comparing his work with another Qing scholar, Jiao Xun(焦循 1763-1820). Chapter three investigates TaiSui Kao(太歲考) by comparing different explanation of Taisui between Yinzhi and his contemporaries and also verifying his theory by science method. Chapter four examines the exegesis of function words in Shuwen with the aim of revealing its characteristics and scientificity apart from Shangshu Xungu (尚書訓詁) and Shici. At the same time, the controversial issue over the author of Shuwen and Shici would also be discussed. The last chapter gives a conclusion on how these three perspectives have increased the understanding of Wang Yinzhi’s academic interest and added new dimension to the researches of Two Wangs.王引之(1766-1834),字伯申,江蘇高郵人,清代著名學者,與其父王念孫(1744-1832)世稱高郵王氏父子。二人校治古籍,創獲頗多,王念孫著《廣雅疏證》、《讀書雜志》,王引之著《經義述聞》、《經傳釋詞》,四書合稱「高郵王氏四種」。歷來評論二王之學,多以王念孫為重心,混同二人而不作區分,隱沒王引之的治學特色。近年開始有學者留意王氏父子治學的不同,打破王氏父子合論的框架,頗見成績。本文循此以進,將焦點放在《經義述聞》中王引之對易學、古天文曆法以及虛詞的研究。這三個範疇皆屬王引之術業專攻的領域,本文希望藉此揭示王引之異於其父的學術興趣以及成因,呈現引之個人的治學特色。本文共分五章,首章導論闡述研究緣起、文獻回顧、研究範圍及方法,勾勒清代有關《易》學、古天文曆法及虛詞研究的情況,作為全文的張本。次章從《周易述聞》對《周易》經傳校改的條目中,建構王引之經傳互證、本卦自釋的《易》學系統,並以此與焦循的《易》學比較,揭示王氏《易》學的價值,旁及伯申對里堂《易》學的態度。第三章以〈太歲考〉為研究對象,整理王引之對古天文曆法的研究,比較其與時人對「太歲」的不同理解,同時以科學方法驗證其說,揭示其時代意義。第四章探討《述聞》所見的虛詞校改條目,兼及《尚書訓詁》、《經傳釋詞》的材料,發掘不見於《釋詞》的虛詞研究特色,同時說明王引之虛詞研究的科學性,確立二書互為表裡的關係,兼論二書部分材料的作者問題。末章結論,總結各章內容,重申王引之對《易》學、古天文曆法及虛詞研究有獨特建樹,這三方面的研究,均有助今人對王引之的治學旨趣及研究成果有更立體的認識,同時突破過去將父子二人合論的研究方法,為高郵二王之學的研究開拓新的方向。韋澤輝.Parallel title from English abstract.Thesis M.Phil.     Positive and neutral updating reconsolidate aversive episodic memories via different routes

    Aversive memories are long-lasting and prone to burden our emotional wellbeing and mental health. Yet, how to remedy the maladaptive effects of aversive memories remains elusive. Using memory reactivation and emotional updating manipulations, we investigated how positive and neutral emotion may update aversive memories for reconsolidation in humans. We found that positive updating after reactivation was equivalent to neutral updating in impairing true memories of a previous aversive event after a 12-hour wakeful delay, but induced more false memory. Moreover, additional 12-hour delay with overnight sleep did not further enlarge true memory differences, but attenuated the effect of reactivation and updating on false memory. Interestingly, the neutral rather than the positive updating reduced the emotional arousal of the aversive memory 24 h later. Our findings could serve as a reference for real-world therapeutic applications regarding how positive and neutral updating may reshape aversive memories, especially when taking wake- and sleep-filled reconsolidation into account.Fil: Wang, Jingyi.
