Christopher Gardner - Self-made Millionaire and Author
Self-made millionaire and author of the autobiography, The Pursuit of Happyness Breaking the Cycle
Christopher Gardner, who told his story of rising from poverty to self-made millionaire in his autobiography The Pursuit of Happyness, presented Breaking the Cycle as part of Wright State University\u27s Presidential Lecture Series on Monday, Sept. 10, at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room.
In The Pursuit of Happyness, Gardner tells how he overcame a lack of education, the struggles of being a single parent and homelessness to become CEO of Gardner Rich LLC, an institutional brokerage firm. His autobiography quickly became a New York Times #1 bestseller and was made into a movie of the same name starring Will Smith.
In the early 1980s, Gardner became homeless in San Francisco and the sole guardian of his toddler son, Chris Jr. Unwilling to give up on his son or his dream of financial independence, Gardner started at the bottom of the financial industry ladder with very little pay, spending nights in homeless shelters or the bathroom of a subway station. With no college degree and no experience in the stock market, he worked his way up the ranks at Dean Witter Reynolds and Bear Stearns & Co. before starting his own company.
In his presentation, Gardner shared his story of hard work, tenacity, struggle, faith, entrepreneurialism, fatherly devotion and breaking the cycles that hold you back.
The Wright State University Presidential Lecture Series was developed to advance human justice and promote the university\u27s commitment to creating a diverse university community and learning environment.
A board member of the National Fatherhood Initiative, which aims to improve the well-being of children by increasing the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible, committed fathers, Gardner received the group\u27s Father of the Year Award in 2002. He has given his time, assistance and financial support to many programs serving the homeless and at-risk individuals. He received the 2006 Friends of Africa Award from the Continental Africa Chamber of Commerce.
This free-to-the-public lecture was sponsored by the Office of the Provost, Student Affairs, the Raj Soin College of Business, the College of Education and Human Services, the Office of the Senior Vice President for Curriculum and Instruction, University College, the Office of Student Activities and the Office of Communications and Marketing.

Book Review: climate change, capitalism and corporations: processes of creative self-destruction by Christopher Wright and Daniel Nyberg
In Climate Change, Capitalism and Corporations: Processes of Creative Self-Destruction, Christopher Wright and Daniel Nyberg seek to show how businesses have constructed narratives surrounding climate change, drawing upon interviews with corporate actors. Christopher Shaw praises the book for outlining how corporations have worked to maintain their interests and promote continued market expansion as conducive to effective climate change policy. However, he questions the utility of their interviews for systemic analysis and the book’s overarching disinclination to challenge the foundational myth of a single definable limit to climate change

Investment in Training for Professional Services Employees: Relationships Between Training, Employee Performance, and Retention
Abstract
Professional services firms invest substantial time and funding in employee training, and an understanding of the return on these investments will be of great interest to those firms and their stakeholders. I undertook this quantitative study to understand the relationships between formal training, employee performance and employee retention in a professional services firm, with a hypothetical expectation of a positive relationship between training and both performance and retention. In performing this study, I gathered data on each of the three variables directly, and anonymously, from a participating firm, in order to maximize the amount of data available and minimize the amount of bias which might otherwise come from individual surveys. The data was subjected to correlation analysis, multinomial logistic regression analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis. The findings from the data analysis did not support either hypothesis, despite indicating an overall increase in observed performance; however, the findings did point toward a likely positive relationship between experiential learning and employee performance. These findings indicated an opportunity for professional services firms to develop a holistic approach to training which formally plans and documents expectations for formal and experiential training as part of a career architecture consistent with both whole person development and the tenets of Servant Leadership. As an outgrowth of this study, I propose a model for professional services firms to use in developing an integrated staffing approach to skills acquisition.

Surface Value:Group Exhibition. Exhibiting artists: Alistair Payne, Christopher Stevens, Mark Wright, Nadine Feinson, Stuart MacKenzie
Even though there has been an expansion of technological possibilities for art over recent years, paint remains precious as a medium: it has a staying power few others can match. To explore how painting continues to be relevant today, we are pleased to present Surface Value, an exhibition curated by Mark Wright, who teaches at both The Glasgow School of Art and University of Brighton. The exhibition brings together painters who are colleagues and also authorities on the medium. From Glasgow there is Alistair Payne, the Head of the School, and Stuart Mackenzie RSA, Senior drawing and painting tutor. From the University of Brighton, Christopher Stevens, Head of Painting and Nadine Feinson, Senior lecturer in Fine Art Painting. What they all have is a commitment to painting both within their own practice and as a taught subject. The exhibition travelled to & Model Gallery in Leeds in November, expanding to include a further eight painters, and is kindly supported by The Glasgow School of Art. (text by Mark Wright
An interdisciplinary study of information systems: Christopher Alexander and IS failure.
This paper describes work carried out at the University of York; its contents do not represent the views or opinions of BT. It provides an example of how insights into the field of IS can be gained by looking at it from the perspective of other academic disciplines. Based on the idea that physical and virtual office spaces exist to serve parallel organisational requirements, it is argued that designers of information systems (IS) should be able to learn from the experience of architects in order to improve their methods and redefine their objectives. Firstly, the work of Christopher Alexander is reviewed to show how his work on architectural patterns has been of value to the designers object-oriented systems. Secondly, similarities in the literature between notions of failure in architecture and IS design are identified. These are then examined through interviews with practitioners to establish the relevance of the approach. Finally, the area that Alexander described as ‘the quality without a name’ is highlighted as a topic for further research.Information Systems, Patterns, Virtual Office, Christopher Alexander
