Fundamental view of the outcomes of entrepreneurship education
The research
paper presents a holistic framework of the outcomes of entrepreneurship
education (EE) at educational and socio-economic levels. Employing the general
scientific research methods, monograph and logical construction, the author investigates
the fundamental origins of the European Competence Framework for
entrepreneurial learning and identifies a scientific justification for its
implementation. This work is also the first to exploit an integral view of
entrepreneurship as a combination of employability, intrapreneurship and
venture creation – for measuring the impact of entrepreneurship education, and
to set linkages between learning outcomes in real life and educational settings.
The target audiences for this paper include entrepreneurship educators,
researchers and EE decision-makers. </p
Variation in the ovine KAP8-1 gene affects wool fibre uniformity in Chinese Tan sheep
Chinese Tan sheep are known for producing ‘spring-like’ crimped wool fleeces that consist of both fine wool fibres (non-medulated) and heterotypic wool fibres (frequently medulated). The genetic basis of these unique characteristics is poorly understood. Wool fibres are comprised of hard alpha-keratins embedded in keratin-associated proteins (KAPs). Variation in the KAP8-1 gene (KRTAP8-1) was investigated in Chinese Tan sheep, and the effect of variation in the gene on four key wool traits [mean fibre diameter (MFD), fibre diameter standard deviation (FDSD), coefficient of variation of fibre diameter (CVFD) and mean fibre curvature (MFC)] was investigated for both the fine and heterotypic wool fibres. Three previously identified ovine KRTAP8-1 variants (A, D and E) were detected, but two other previously identified variants (B and C) were not present in these Tan sheep. Of the six genotypes (AA, AD, AE, DD, DE and EE) observed, the effect of the genotype on wool traits were analysed for the three (AA, AE and EE) where the genotype frequency was greater than 5%. Genotype was found to have an effect (P = 0.022) on CVFD in the fine wool. These results suggest that variation in KRTAP8-1 affects fibre uniformity in Tan sheep
Studies on relationships between transferrin types and some wool properties of Karacabey Merino lambs
The aim of this study was to find out the types of transferrin (Tf) of Karacabey Merino lambs (male) and demonstrate their relationships with some wool properties. In this study, 181 lambs were used as a material. Blood samples were analysed for transferrin types by means of starch gel electrophoresis technique. Wool samples were examined for wool yield, staple length and fiber diameter, Tf types; AA, AB, AC, AD, AE, BB, BC, BD, BE, CC, CD, DD, DE and EE were obtained in the lambs tested. The average fibre diameter, staple length iınd wool yield of the animals were 21.6 4.17 cm, and 1,79 kg respectively. There was no statistically important re/o tionship between Tf types and wool properties of the lambs tested.Bu araştırma Karacabey Merinos kuzularda transferrin (Tf) tipleriyle bazı yün özellikleri arasında bir ilişki olup olmadığını belirlemek için yapıldı. Java EE and Spring Platform Comparison in Web Application Development
Noslēgumā tiek doti ieteikumi platformas izvēlē atkarībā no realizējamā projekta specifikas.Java EE and Spring are most popular Java web application platforms. Early versions of Java EE platform had complicated development process and high resource usage so in developer community it was called "heavy-weight". Spring platform emerged as an alternative "light-weight" platform. Later Java EE was updated and development complexity was decreased.
Paper describes features of Java EE 6 and Spring 3 platform and analyses platform functionality. Performance of both platforms is tested using applications developed by author. In conclusion author gives recommendations for platform choice depending on project characteristics
Influential Publications in Ecological Economics: A Citation Analysis
We assessed the degree of influence of selected papers and books in ecological economics using citation analysis. We looked at both the internal influence of publications on the field of ecological economics and the external influence of those same publications on the broader academic community. We used four lists of papers and books for the analysis: (1) 92 papers nominated by the Ecological Economics (EE) Editorial Board; (2) 71 papers that were published in EE and that received 15 or more citations in all journals included in the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Citation Index; (3) 57 papers that had been cited in EE 15 or more times; and (4) 77 monographs and edited books that had been cited in EE 15 or more times. For each publication we counted the total number of ISI citations as well as the total number of citations in EE. We calculated the average number of citations/yr to each paper since its publication in both the ISI database and in EE, along with the percentage of the total ISI citations that were in EE. Ranking the degree of influence of the publications can be done in several ways, including using the number of ISI citations, the number of EE citations or both. We discuss both the internal and external influence of publications and show how these influences might be considered jointly. We display and analyze the results in several ways. By plotting the ISI citations against the EE citations we can identify those papers that are mainly influential in EE with some broader influence, those that are mainly influential in the broader literature but have also had influence on EE, and other patterns of influence. There are both overlaps and interesting lacunae among the four lists that give us a better picture of the real influence of publications in ecological economics versus perceptions of those publications' importance. By plotting the number of citations vs. date of publication, we can identify those publications that are projected to be most influential. Plots of the time series of citations over the 1990-2003 period show a generally increasing trend (contrary to what one would expect for an "average" paper) for the top papers. We suggest that this pattern of increasing citations (and thus influence) over time is one hallmark of a "foundational" paper.
Information portal for women's organization / Emmy Jong Ee Mei
This report describes the proposed Information Portal for Women's Organization developed for the PELITAWANIS TNB Organization, a women's organization established by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to foster closer ties between the women work force and wives of the employees from all levels in TNB. The PELITAWANIS TNB Portal is for use by the members of the PELITAWANIS TNB Organization. This portal is a one-person project handled by the author. Therefore, the author is responsible for the development of all the system module. Among the modules are search facilities, online, registration, forum, bulletin board, member list and update, and user feedback. The purpose of this portal is to present information regarding the organization, its activities, members and services in an interesting manner and to make this information readily available to its members and other interested parties. It also facilitates information sharing besides encouraging interaction and communication between members. The portal also servesas an avenue for announcements regarding the organization. Other than that, it will also be possible to monitor the log ins of the members. The administrators of the portal can perform management tasks to update the contents of the portal and the member data. The Waterfall with Prototype model is chosen as the development platform is the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server. The PELITAWANIS TNB portal of course will also undergo testing and evaluation after its completion. With the birth of the portal, its is hoped that this will encourage more women to use the facilities made available to enrich their knowledge and experience, particularly in the areas of information and communication technology
Variation in ovine KRTAP8-1 affects mean staple length and opacity of wool fiber
In this study, keratin-associated proteins gene (KRTAP8-1) from five different sheep breeds and breed-crosses (n = 310) was genotyped using a Polymerase Chain Reaction-Single Strand confirmation Polymorphism (PCR-SSCP). Six unique genotypes were observed: AA, AC, AD, AE, DD and EE, with AA being the most common in the different breeds and crosses. Twelve wool characteristics: yield, mean staple length (MSL), bulk, mean fiber diameter (MFD), fiber diameter standard deviation (FDSD), coefficient of variation of fiber diameter (CVFD), medullation, standard deviation of medullation (MeSD), coefficient of variation of medullation (CVMed), opacity, standard deviation of opacity (OpSD), and coefficient of variation of opacity (CVOp) were measured on wool derived from the sheep. Variation in KRTAP8-1 was found to have strong association with MSL, OpSD and CVOp (p ≤ 0.027). The MSL of sheep of genotype AE was greater (p = 0.027) than for sheep of genotype AA. The OpSD of sheep of genotype AA was less (p = 0.017) than sheep with the AE genotype, and the CVOp of sheep with genotype AA was less (p = 0.018) than sheep with genotype AE. Further studies are required to confirm the role of variation in KRTAP8-1 in improving quality wool production
Essays in law, politics and corporate finance
This thesis examines some of the interaction between law, and politics and corporate finance. These institutions help shape the incentives of firms and other economic actors. One section of this thesis investigates the value of firm political connections to U.S. congressional candidates in close elections using a regression discontinuity design. It describes the federal political institutions in the United States and construct a database of contributions from publicly traded firms to candidates for federal office. In a sample of o-cycle special elections, set exogenously to the contributing firms, the author compares the outcomes of firms that contributed to winning candidates to firms that contributed to losing candidates, and finds the wedge between these firms to be 1.7% to 6.8% of firm equity value. The author studies which congressional committee assignment seats are most valuable to examine which areas of policy matter most and shows that these connections matter for future sales. The author then documents additional actions that firms take to develop and maintain their political connections {lcub} engaging professional lobbyists and directly employing former government employees {lcub} and shows that these actions seem to form a cohesive political strategy. A second section of the thesis studies incentives in civil litigation cases in the United States. The author describes how the institutional setup of the United States' class action shapes the incentives of plaintis and defendants and examine whether the market learns about firms by observing their behavior during litigation. The author develops a simple model of litigation and show that with information asymmetries firms may have an incentive to engage in costly litigation to prevent future lawsuits. The author examines the value implications of a firm's decision to settle a class action lawsuit and provides evidence consistent with the model, showing that firms which exit litigation by settlement trade at lower Q ratios. This reduction is not driven by profitability, leverage, size, or bankruptcy risk. Furthermore, firms that ultimately settle, but spend more money during litigation prior to settlement trade at higher Q ratios
I’m not your stereotype: gendering entrepreneurial education (EE)
Questions we care about (objectives) This study contributes to the body of knowledge of entrepreneurial educators’ strategies to work towards gender inclusion in entrepreneurial education (EE). By illustrating how gender stereotypes and gender bias are constructed and reconstructed in EE. An important insight is taken from the study by (Jones, 2014), this author shows that entrepreneurs are presented in EE as a homogeneous group with similar character traits and an equal 'entrepreneurial mindset' (p. 244). This description portraits a right way to be an entrepreneur which is traditionally been associated with a white western man, masculine behaviour and masculine abilities (Jones, 2014). As a consequence, a paradox in EE appears; training and education reduces the gender gap on the one hand (Cheraghi and Schøtt, 2015), but at the same time it is also the place where the gender gap is maintained because these gender stereotypes are intertwined in this training and education (Korhonen, Komulainen and Räty, 2012). The aim of this paper is to use Social Role Theory in order to better understand the dynamics of gender in EE. This leads to the following research questions: what are the main mechanisms that contribute to gender-inclusive entrepreneurship education (EE) and how are the different mechanisms that contribute to gender inclusive entrepreneurship education (EE) integrated into the current curriculum? Approach In-depth interviews with 12 lecturers that teach/coach in the field of EE from across various faculties in a large University for Applied Sciences combined with newsletters created by one of largest EE programs at this institution (267 pages in 2020) is carried out. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to guide the in-depth interviews. Subsequently, discourse analysis gives insight into gendering in EE at the investigated institution. Results The main findings suggests that when questioned about the topic all respondents stressed the importance of gender equally, only a few seem to be aware of the need to address the issue in their classroom(s) while none of the programs currently adopt a gender perspective while coaching their potential entrepreneurs or when addressing how the entrepreneurial ecosystem functions. Implications These findings and perspectives point to the importance of recognizing that a “one size fits all” approach to curricula may not be appropriate, and that gender-sensitive programming, especially related to dealing with these gender stereotypes and gender bias, are needed. This means that in educational development there are opportunities to create better education and create equal opportunities for male and female students. Value/originality Women still form the minority amongst the population of (potential) entrepreneurs and find it more difficult to grow their venture due to a range of (institutional) barriers. This study shows that, thus far, EE insufficiently addresses this topic and points to opportunities for interventions for increasing the gender inclusiveness of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, especially for female ones, instilling in them the awareness and knowledge that as a female entrepreneur starting a business isn’t without gendered challenges. This research therefore adds to the body of knowledge on the construction and reconstruction of gender stereotypes and gender bias in the field of EE
