    Rational production of veneer by IR-heating of green wood during peeling: Modeling experiments

    Heating green wood logs by infrared (IR) radiation during peeling for veneer production has been numerically simulated, focusing on the heating kinetics of a green wood cylinder rotating with a decreasing radius. The results confi rm those of previous experiments, that this kind of heating is a promising alternative to soaking wood prior to peeling. The model integrates the green wood parameters such as moisture content, density, distribution and ratios of earlywood and latewood, on the one hand, and the peeling conditions of veneer thickness and peeling speed, on the other. The following heat transfer processes were considered: conduction within the bolt, external heating by the IR source, and convection between the bolt surface and the external environment. The outputs were the temperatures of the bolt surface and of layers several millimeters deep. For maximal heat penetration, the bolt should turn in front of the IR source before cutting starts and the IR source should be positioned at the greatest angular distance ahead of the knife. Several heating scenarios could be simulated by the model, thus it is a useful decision-making tool for the design of an in-line IR heating system installed on the peeling lathe.Institut Carnot ARTS, RYM-TO Doctoral Schoo

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Wood-adhesive interface characterization and modeling in engineered wood flooring

    Adhesive films used in layered wood-based composites have a significant impact on moisture movement and must be considered in models of such products. The objective of this study was to characterize the wood-adhesive interface and determine its impact on the hygromechanical behavior of engineered wood flooring (EWF). The radial water vapor diffusion coefficient and the coefficients of moisture expansion were determined for sugar maple wood, crosslinked polyviny1 acetate adhesive film (XPVAc), and the wood-adhesive interface. Sugar maple wood had the highest diffusion coefficient at 1.66 x 10-11 m2 · s-1 followed by the wood-adhesive interface at 5.73 x 10-12 m2 · s-1, and the free XPVAc film at 4.18 x 10-12 m2 · s-1. The coefficient of tangential moisture expansion of the sugar maple wood-adhesive interface was found to be 4 x 10-3 (%MC)-1 compared with 3 x 10-3 (%MC)-1 for sugar maple wood in the tangential direction, and 3 x 10-3 (%MC)-1 for the XPVAc film. Finite element modeling of EWF hygromechanical cupping did not show significant differences between hygromechanical cupping calculated with and without interface effects

    Natural Variability of the Color of Beech Wood in the Color Space CIE L*a*b*

    In this contribution, the color of dry beech wood from the zone, sapwood, mature wood and false heartwood of Fagus sylvatica L. trees was analyzed, and the measurement values were statistically processed in relation to the lightness coordinate L* as well as the chromatic coordinates of red color a* and yellow color b* in the color space CIE L*a*b*. The dispersion of color (color dispersion) ∆EuC of beech wood in coreless zones and the color of the wood of false heartwood were evaluated through the combined standard uncertainties of the individual coordinates of the color space. The visual color differences between the color of sapwood beech wood and the color of mature wood as well as between the color of sapwood and false heartwood are numerically documented through the values of total color differences ∆E* = 3.5 and ∆E* = 18.1. Within the framework of the categorization, the color difference between mature wood and sapwood belongs to the category of visible changes, and the difference between the color of the wood of the false heartwood and the color of the sapwood belongs to the category of significant color changes. By defining the boundaries of the color of beech wood for the color of sapwood, mature wood and false heartwood in the color space CIE L*a*b*, space is created to sort it into color groups in case of customer requests. At the same time, designers are expanding the possibilities of applying beech wood to color compositions, depending on the darkness and color of the beech wood identified by the values of the color space coordinates
