Hybrid Modeling of Miniaturized 50 W Annular Hall Thruster
A 50-W-class annular Hall thruster is studied with a hybrid axial–radial two-dimensional model. Ions are described by a kinetic approach, whereas fluid conservation equations are solved for electrons. In such models, additional (anomalous) contributions must be added to the momentum-transfer electron collision frequency to obtain realistic values of the cross-field electron mobility. First, a parametric study is performed, where anomalous transport is described with a simple two-region model based on constant empirical parameters. The simulated global performance is subsequently compared with experimental measurements. Then, laser-induced fluorescence ion velocity measurements are employed to infer a continuous profile of the anomalous electron collision frequency along the channel centerline. The model reproduces the performance, the acceleration structure, the current oscillations, and the doubly charged ion fraction of the laboratory thruster. Measurements of the ion velocity distribution function highlight the presence of a slow ion population in the near plume. The production of the slow ions and their growth for increasing distances from the thruster channel exit is qualitatively reproduced by the model. The results obtained suggest that the generation and dynamics of the observed slow ions can be attributed to the presence of energetic electrons in the plume
Development of Plasma JetBased Fluid Surface Stabilization Technology
https://archives.kaist.ac.kr/eng/research.jsp?year=2021&view=view04제트 기체를 액체 표면에 분사시키는 구조는 과학분야와 산업기술에서 다양하게 쓰이고 있지만, 기체 제트가 분사되는 액체 표면에서 유체역학적으로 불안정성이 커져 이를 안정화하는 방법에 대한 연구가 절실했다. 본 연구에서는 기체를 이온화시킨 플라즈마가 기체와 액체 사이 경계면의 유체역학적 안정성을 높이는 것을 최초로 발견하고 그 원인을 규명하였다. 플라즈마 제트에 의해 유체 표면에 인가되는 힘은 유체방울의 생성이나 방울이 튀어오르는 것을 최소화하면서도 보다 안정적으로 경계면을 깊이 파이게 한다. 특히, 본 연구는 중성기체 제트에 비해 플라즈마 제트가 경계면에 더욱 깊고 안정적인 공동을 만드는 원인이 수면을 따라 전파되는 가스 이온화 펄스파인 ‘플라즈마 총알’의 영향임을 보였다. 본 연구는 플라즈마 제트를 활용한 기초·응용과학 발전에 쓸 수 있는 기초 기술을 개발한 것으로 과학 연구와 산업 현장에서 기초 기술로 활용할 수 있으며, 플라즈마 의료, 생명, 농업, 식품, 화학 등 여러 분야의 기술 개발에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.Gas jets can create dimple-like depressions in liquid surfaces. As the speed of the gas jet increases, the cavity becomes unstable and starts bubbling and splashing. Despite its scientific and practical importance, little is known about how gas-blown liquid cavities become deformed and destabilized. This study, for the first time, revealed that an ionized gas jet blowing onto water, also known as a ‘plasma jet’, produces a more stable interaction with the water’s surface compared to a neutral gas jet. It found that electrohydrodynamic forces exerted by the plasma jet make the water surface cavity more stable, meaning there is less bubbling and splashing compared to the cavity created by a neutral gas jet. Specifically, the study showed that the plasma jet consists of pulsed waves of gas ionization propagating along the water’s surface so-called ‘plasma bullets’ that exert more force than a neutral gas jet, making the cavity deeper without becoming destabilized. This finding will help improve the scientific understanding of plasma-liquid interactions and their practical applications in a wide range of industrial fields in which fluid control technology is used, including biomedical engineering, chemical production, and agriculture and food engineering.한국과학기술원 : 원자력 및 양자공학
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
